Repairing the door lock cylinder on a Volkswagen Golf Mark 4. The cam inside the barrel is the part that usually breaks. You can buy a replacement set online for a few euros/dollars. I would advise keeping your locks lubricated to prevent them from breaking in the first place. Thanks for watching. If you found this video helpful, maybe you could consider supporting my channel by using the ‘Super Thanks’ button below the video. Your support would be really appreciated, thank you ! Dear sir, Thank you very much for your beautifully clear and informative video without which I would have had to pay at least £75 to a mechanic. Instead of which the repair Kit cost me £4.50 from the local VW parts depot. I followed your instructions and it went very smoothly this is where the Internet really works well thank you once again for sharing.

So, how much do I like the conciseness and clarity of this vid? I love it, as I am now using it, TWICE. I just wish the poxy, pattern lock kits which are seemingly made of damp shortbread, were as reliable and helpful as this video. They lasted all of six months. At least I know this info, kindly supplied, is spot-on. Many thanks.

@@screwsnutsandbolts Thanks again. I know it's lame trying to put that spring on the right place but it was a bit frustrating. The key is use tailpiece. That means pushing spring with that and in the same moment moving one end of spring with screwdriver (or something else). Additonaly i had to cut ends in my spring about 1 mm also. That's why i needed so much time. You know i was afraid also to destroy my new tailpiece (by using this to push spring). However i fixed it and mounted in car door. Works good. P.S. My fingers hurt yet :)

Thank you VERY much for taking the time to do such a great video, this was extremely helpful. Last week my lock cylinder pulled right out of the housing when I tried to roll down my windows using the key. I ended up pulling a junkyard door handle assembly, both inner and outer, to study them and use for parts. Tonight I removed my old lock and housing but thought I was screwed when some pieces popped out. I'm going to try again tomorrow to wrap it up but this really helped me understand how to put it all back together.

Thank you for this. The bottom cam piece on my driver door 99 B5 Passat was broken, some of the parts are a tiny bit different but overall practically the same. And the repair kit I got was slightly different too, from the original. There are other videos around, but this was straight to the point and showed it well in good detail. If I could make one small suggestion (for future content, this is very good as is), it's to show stuff like the cam pieces a little bit more, from more angles, so viewers can see the full shape a little bit better. And maybe the position of the actual key/lock cylinder and the sleeve around it inside the outer casing, as it won't go together unless it's at the right angle and the pin-thingy slides down into the small, deeper recess. It could be useful for those that have taken the cylinder out for re-keyring or a full overhaul. That's what I ended up doing when I saw what an absolute stuffed mess the inside was like. Never disassembled, overhauled and rebuilt a wafer'esque lock cylinder before, so it took some time but in the end worked out ok. It was so full of watery oil-goop and grime that the all thebwafers barely moved when extracting the key; had to leaver and pull them out with a pick and pliers. If anyone needing to do this reads this post: Yours might not be as sticky so take out the key *VERY* slowly. They're spring loaded and only held in by the key going through them. So hold your finger over them and extract one at a time. Make sure you mark the cylinder in a way that doesn't come off when cleaning it, and lay the wafers in the correct order so you can't accidentally knock it and mess it up. And note down the numbers, their sequence and positions; it's stamped on the wafers. This way if younever lose your keys and you need a new key cut to get into the car, you can get that cut at any practically any locksmith, from the wafer number sequence. It won't have the chip for the immobilizer, but at least you can get inside. If you do mess the wafers up, it's not the end of the world, there's only a few of them, and you can figure out which goes where by doing them one at a time with only that one wafer in one spot in the cylinder. You don't need to hassle with keeping all the other wafers in check in the cylinder while testing. Insert the key fully, and check that it goes flush with the cylinder (on both sides), or barely sticks out 1-0.5mm under the spring tension and will go flush with a gentle push. Also be extremely careful when working with the springs. They're so small and light that they'll stick to stuff just by static, but they're still springs so they'll f**k off on you if you barely look at them too long - never to be seen again. Long story short, my lock cylinder now has one less wafer (do not install wafers without their spring! They won't return to position properly and can jam your cylinder). If you lose a spring and don't have spares, leave out a wafer when reassembling it. A bonus after having done this once - I now know it's frankly quite easy to "re-pin" these types of locks and sets of these wafers are cheap on AliExpress and Ebay. So if I'm ever in a position where I have a car with these locks, that have different keys for different locks because of a former used-parts repair (or I need to do one) - I can save a lot of money by just re-pin in the other cylinder(s) to fit the ignition key.

@pr0xZen
@pr0xZen 9 ай бұрын
@@mikeogilvie6949 It's really not that bad, there's just a few pitfalls to avoid. And I explained it as fully as possible so that anyone reading can do it, and understand what those pitfalls are, how they work, and how to avoid them so they _do not_ become an issue that you have to struggle with fixing. It ended up a long read, but hopefully a couple of minutes reading can save you hours of trouble. At its core, the primary "challenges" and how to avoid them, is going slow and bring patient when disassembling it so the springs don't fly off, or you miss / forget what sequence the wafers were in. Once you got the cylinder out with the key inside, keep one finger pressing down on and covering over the springs and wafer tops. The wafers have holes in them that the keyblade passes through. The springs tension each wafer so that they return to the right position when there's no key in them. The outer cylinder liner stops the wafers and springs from going anywhere. But when disassembling the cylinder you remove this outer cylinder liner. That's not an issue as long as the key is still inside the cylinder, since the keyblade penetrating the wafers keep them from moving. However, when you withdraw the key then, the wafers and the tiny springs that tension them are no longer blocked by the outer sleeve and they're free to spring all the way out. Thus, use a finger pressed across the top of the wafers and springs to do the job of outer sleeve. Then once you pull the key out from one wafer, lift the finger across the top of them slowly (!), so that you stay in control of releasing the tension on that wafer/spring combo, doing one of them at a time. When resssembling the cylinder, you do the same just in reverse. Input a set of springs, the correct wafer on top of them, press it down and push the keyblade through the wafer. Once the keyblade penetrates the wafer, they are locked in place and cannot go anywhere unless the key is withdrawn. As you do this, put the springs where they can't get lost or bumped (a jar, on a piece of sticky tape etc), and lay out the wafers in the order and orientation you take them out. If possible, write down the number on the side of each wafer as you go - then if they do get mixed up you have the sequence written down. Write the sequence down and store somewhere safe (not!!! inside the car). Then if for some reason you were to lose all your keys for it, you can get a new one cut from just the sequence so you can get inside the car, put the ignition in ACC and undo the steering column lock. From there new immobilizer chips can be programmed. This way you can get new working keys from a no-keys stsrting point, without needing a flatbed tow, breaking a window, installing all new lock cylinders, and new instrument cluster/ECU/Immobilizer. If you're still afraid the springs will f00k off on you, then stick either just the cylinder (w/key in) or your hand holding it, inside a clear plastic bag while disassembling it. If doing it like this, it might not be practical to withdraw it from the bag for every wafer extracted so you can place them out in sequence, but you should be able to read the stamped or laser etched numbers on them through the bag. So just note down the sequence they come out and follow that note when resssembling it. - If you mess up the wafer sequence, there's really not that many wafer sizes and placements. Nor that many possible combinations; it can only be a sequence combination of the wafers you already have. And for each wafer you get right, the number of possible combinations goes down very fast. It's not just a guessing game either, you can clearly see if the top of the wafer goes roughly flush with the cylinder body once the key is fully inserted. Just start with the wafer closest to the key hole and predd they key all the way in. Once you have a wafer in that spot that sits roughly flush with the cylinder body when the key is fully in, pull the keyblade back out but only so far that it still penetrates the wafers you have gotten right, then rinse and repeat until you have them all in correct place. Write down the wafer number sequence as you go, should it happen again later. If you have a set of suitable tweezers for pulling the wafers out manually, you can do this process without the springs in, reducing risk of them flying off while you keep inputting and extracting wafers to figure out the sequence. Or, do it inside the plastic bag.
