it's weird, but it makes sense to put the demist button with the lights, it's visibility related. I really like the Golf, id have an R Line because it's got less fiddly styling and the one piece seats look great

As always a great video. Like the external styling of the Golf but you are never going to convince me that having an iPad to control everything is a good idea. You showed in your video that the system can be temperamental and that just makes it dangerous. The driver will have to take their eyes off the road to check their gesture has worked. Far simpler, and safer to have tactile buttons and switches. A classic example of boffins asking “can we” but forgetting “should we”.

Agree. Though the Ford's HVAC and radio knobs may be made out of painfully cheap plastics, I've not once wanted to punch these things, cos they just work. And, to turn off the safety crap is about 4 stabs too many. But you need them to prevent the inevitable accident you are referring to

My Skoda Superb has the hand gesture swipey screen thing which was novel at first but I found it would change my radio station whenever I reached down to adjust the temp dial, so I turned it off.

I own a golf 8 and have no problem with the infotainment system. The gesture thing is a bit of gimmick but does work pretty well if you use it properly and not just wave at it. If I had to criticise anything it would be that the controls for volume and temperature don’t light up at night so can be difficult to see in the dark, although you can use the volume control on the steering wheel and temperature can easily be adjusted by voice control. I certainly don’t find the controls any more difficult than on other cars I’ve had.

@@ianelliott229 We all know this trend is down to TESLA "me too" designers and cost cutting by the car companies. It must be so much cheaper to consolidate everything in to an iPad/software driven interface. I still believe it is highly likely this fad will be outlawed due to safety concerns (what is the difference between using the computer's "stuck on" iPad and your own phone when driving?). It is also more dangerous in countries where right hand drive is the norm. Not quite so illogical for me as I am left-handed but very alien to right-handed people.

Clearly a great car EXCEPT for the infotainment system; whatever you say, it is much less safe to use on the move than, for example, the idrive one. Trying to touch one’s finger on the right place on the screen or sliders, while being jostled by British roads, requires constant eyes off the road. I truly believe it’s massive own goal by VAG and I will be replacing mine with a Mazda not another VAG vehicle. Btw, your analogy with an iPhone proves my point and it’s why we are banned from using them while driving. It’s such a shame because otherwise VAG make brilliantly conceived vehicles.

Mark, a supremely polished review of a seemingly supremely polished car! You’ve left me thinking the new Golf is actually pretty decent...which isn’t the kind of feeling I’ve had from other reviews. The closest I can come to comparing is having the use of a Mk7 DSG 1.6 TDI and it was so bloody hard to fault!

So VW charges as much for a 48V hybrid Golf as Toyota does for an actually hybrid Corolla? I get that Toyota still has Nokia-age infotainment systems, but that doesn't really seems competitive, especially with Ford, the Koreans and the French all fighting for lower price tier victory.

sorry , couldn't care less about a Golf. Boring , ugly-ish , bad ridding , stiff , and always had horrible and uncomfortable seats, i really don't know why journalist still rave about the Golf . Its a type of car that even if i would won it on national lottery and if wouldn't own a car at that point, I would not be bothered to even go and pick it up even if it came fully loaded. And I'm not that rich and picky btw, i once drove a crashed Megan 1.6 manual, for 1200 km with bent wheel towards the A pillar and it was still better than Golf.

The new Golf 8 has electronics that are total sh1t. I know because i have one and there are at least 93 different functions that do not work, or work intermittently, or not at all. This is before I even consider the total sh1t that is we connect ,although it should be called wee connect because it really does take the p1ss. I would like 5 minutes alone in a room with the moron who designed the electronics in this car. I also object quite strongly to being an unpaid beta tester for VW because they could not be bothered to do the job properly in the first place.
