Volkswagen Passat Dash Creaking Noise Repair - How To

In this video I investigate a complaint of a rattling / creaking / rubbing noise in the dash area of a 2012 VW Passat. I find the cause of the problem and show one way of improving/eliminating the noise.

Mies was the same did the same,also below steering wheel were plastic panel meets centre panel plastic cracking to so wedge some sponge between them and its fixed 👌

Excellent video Gerard. I had a noise in the general area of the dash and drop down tray I screwed up the courage to remove the surround. I also wanted to clean the clear plastic covering the central display panel, dusty since I got the car. I removed it, cleaned the central clear plastic panel and noticed one retaining screw was missing. Replaced the screw, put the surround back and all is well. Thanks

Nice! I have some noise but am afraid to take part thinking it would make more noise. Don’t want to risk breaking the plastic pieces cuz I know they don’t come cheap. Most likely the dealers who worked on it didn’t care how they put it back

2013 Passat with same problem. Thanks for your awesome upload. Now I know how to remove this panel safely. I was planning on using an adhesive hatch seal foam tape - also used for door and window insulation. This should make the panel easier to remove in the future, whilst introducing a padded foam insulation against squeaks. I’ll try and remember to come back and leave an update when done.

I’ve got the same problem in my 2013 2.0 tdi passat when I’m driving along it’s sounds like something is rattling or loose really annoying noise

Very good video Sir!! I don't have Passat, but am investigating slight creaky noise on a Golf Mk7 where end of dashboard faces drivers door. I really hate creaky plastic!!!

Craft felt tape works very well for these rattles. It comes in different thickness. Can we get tape with the VW logo? Really, the VW engineers and designers need to be required to read this stuff and have ice water dumped on their head.

Mine has a ticking noise, I did the same thing you did to remove the squeaking noise, I still need to find where the tick noise is coming from I think it is the buttons but sometimes the key does replicate the noise it’s complex cause you have to be driving to really hear it

Seems to be a very common issue on the b7. I'm just back from test driving a 2012 estate b7. Really nice car but that rattle would drive me nuts. I'd be afraid to buy it in case it wasn't fixable lol. I'd end up selling it on at a loss 😆. I hope Oz is treating you well. Love the vids

better than the tape...use sound deadener ...and I would suggest just ordering new clips as well...when you tend to change modify and replace the trimming a lot...the clamp force increasingly decreases...lol

When you drill into the dash there definetly isn’t wires behind it? I have a cc now with all the metal clips on but seems the actual dash with speedometers is loose so I’ll need to drill the two holes out

You can pick up those clips at your local breakers yard for next to nothing.I picked up the lot for a fiver while getting other bits n bobs.

Did you drill out the places to put the screws in? (like in the video) is it the same model of Passat with same looking dash.

@@AL-hl8fq That's the problem then Alan, you needed to drill the hole with a drill bit suitable to use with a self tapping screw. same as if you were fitted a mudflap or number plate to a car. Just punching it out does not have any effect, I created the method to secure it by doing this. I have never heard or seen a Passat that didn't have an area behind suitable to drill. But if your telling me there is none then maybe make a bracket so you can secure it yourself, it will take a bit longer but will work.

It's a nice car, but that noise really annoying. You won't have this even in 30 year old Toyota
