I’ve had the new polo GTI for 6 months and was one of the first in UK to get the car. 49 mpg is bollocks. Only on a long motor way journey if you drive like a boring 80 year old. Put it in sport and it’s great. Comfortable and smooth with a good sound and the space of a golf. Interior is nice but you don’t get all the extras like a seat. It’s quick though if I compare to my previous golf GTI and Mini Cooper s so performance wise it’s good.....worth the money I’m not sure.....but I like mine

i've had mine for over a year now and still love it to bits, maybe its for the 45 year old teenager rather than a actual teenager. but there is nothing wrong with that surely plus everyday driving is amazing. ive had a few goes in the ST fiesta and yes is fun to drive ad if i was actually 18 maybe id go for that , but do i want a headache every time i go out in my car and feel like i'm constantly buzzing?? no i don't now. I do like both the fiesta and the polo but for me its VW thats ended up with my cash

Since we don't get Polos here in the US, what generation golf does this car come closest to size wise? Even though the power is MKV level, is the weight similar too? Unlike most cars, there doesn't seem to be much size gain between golf mk 5-6-7 as there was between mk 1-2-3, leaving room for what I'd guess is mk 4ish size polo.

Sadly we don’t get this across the pond. VW seems to think that all Americans think that bigger is better (maybe true if you live in Texas). But those of us that live in big metropolitan areas would love a car this size. No GTI Up! Either. The Golf is as small as it gets in America.

I love the Mk7 Golf, it's a great car (I have an Alltrack and it's great to drive), but it's certainly not small. It easily feels an entire class larger than my 2004 MkIV GTI. I too wish VW had brought the Polo to the US (and the Scirocco, while I'm dreaming!)

The Golf doesn't have a lot of character compared to its rivals and the Polo even less. Wouldn't you rather have a nearly new i30N?

@@David09420 My point exactly. You need character now and then. The rest of the time you need a car that makes your life easier. This is why VW's hot hatches are so popular, you get all the usual stuff (quality, comfort, materials that make the i30 look like it's half the price, the sound insulation gives the same effect) and you get added poke without having a car that annoys you whenever you're not driving it at 10/10. I would like to have the new i30N because if I bought it now, it would be my second car, I wouldn't daily it. If it's my only car, it has to be something civil, I do more than 30000 km a year.. I get your point, but I hope you see what I'm trying to say as well. I see Golfs everywhere, I see a Hyundai every now and then, and that goes for any hardcore hothatch that didn't depreciate too much. Second hand cars, different stories, and that's exactly for reasons I mentioned, they're usually not your only car, rather a second or third car you bought second hand..

couldnt agree more with you! i was considering an i30n sedan but this polo in aus is 20% cheaper and not 20% slower so for someone like me i might aswell go with this! i really value that they put the ea888 in this too - it will last much longer than the golf gti and r due to the engine being detuned.

You don't see the reviews because the VW takes an eternity to produce the fucking car, so the firsts manual cars will be around in April/May, probably. For the people that drive responsibly and have to ferry their families around this car is perfect. It does what you need it to do for 95% of the time. For the times that you want to do something illegal it isn't as sharp and focussed but then again you don't have to live with a rough ride or nasty interior 100% of the time. Remember that there is a lot of kit out there for VWs so you can customise it, which is what an enthusiastic plans to do anyway.

You know the thing is (cause I owned both variants of the previous polo Gti's ) is that when sat next to a golf mk6/mk7 Gti at the traffic lights I always knew I would be bested, always felt like I was somehow inferior to my polos bigger brother........but I have this new polo Gti now......and well let's just say......I don't feel like that anymore.....cause it now sits neck and neck with the mk7 Gti. Yes it's slightly detuned....but it's also lighter, witch compensates for that. It's probably the best polo Gti variant to date.......it has to be, after all it's just a ever so detuned mk7 Gti sitting under a polo body shell. Btw....the mk7 Gti only starts pulling away from this polo at about 220kph.....and thats out on the open roads. Traffic light to traffic light and short highway stints, the mk7 can't pull away from it.

Sorry an mk6 gti is definitely slower than the previous 1.8tsi polo gti...even an mk7 gti will battle to beat it off the line

The 2.0 polo gti is not much if at all faster than the previous 1.8tsi due to it having the same is12 turbo and the 1.8tsi being lighter. The 1.8tsi engine is actually a better engine for perfomance as it is a lot more similar to the mk7 gti motor and has a better compression ratio as oppose to the new ea888 gen3B in the new polo gti as that is a miller cycle which has a lower compression ratio compared to the original ea888 gen 3 motors.

Nope, Cupra is not cheaper at all. This "cheapo" interior is the best in its class and has softer nicer materials than Leon, let alone an Ibiza..

@@MyRealName the cupra was never gonna be cheaper. And the polos interior is no where near the Leon's. The leons is vertually identical to the golf's and octavias. The difference is minimal. I drove all 3 last summer back to back. I'd if taken the Octavia vrs over the Gti or FR, but sadly the front grill overhaul ended thst idea, that the boxy nature of the golf I couldn't live with either. It's just so bland.

I guess it makes sense, the golf gti is THE hot hatch in the vw lineup and the up gti is the smaller version of that. It's sort of like an rs rs honda, they're not all out sports cars necessarily just regular cars with a bit more shove for people that find base model cars...boring.

Let’s be honest here. Ford have smashed it again with the Fiesta ST and the best thing is you can have comfortable now and when you want to hoon it, sport mode allows you to do just that. Having said that I would like to try a Polo GTI some day.

I'm a Firm believer of the Polo GTI. I drive the previous generation Polo GTI. whilst it is smaller than the modern sized Golfs, it's the same size as the old MK4 and 5 golfs

I have a 2018 Polo R-Line. Has most things the GTI has apart from the engine. As a car that gets you from A to B safely, cheaply (in petrol), and looking great then you can't beat it. If you wanna race then buy something tuned for that but let's face it everyone has to drive to work and back and that's about as exciting as it gets.

The Polo GTI is really heavy (over 1300 kg) it is almost the same weight as the Golf GTI, which may yet shed more weight for the mark 8. Although it seems to be a real bargain, compared with the Golf, once you “spec” it up with goodies that the Golf GTI Performance has as standard, then the difference in price is much less marked. If the Polo could shed 200kg and keep the same power, then it could be very special.

It is a smaller Miller variant! Tuning options are very limited. The engine is doing well in the lower speed range, from 4000 / min up it is over.

@@DucatiDesert No!!! Not the same engine. Miller-motor vs. pure EA888 (Golf). The Miller engine pulls in the lower rpm range, but loses its power starting from 4000 rpm. In my opinion: suboptimal!

Agreed, The 2017 Polo GTI is my first car I own above 100hp and I love it, it looks sporty but not tacky (even in red like mine) in three doors it looks also sportier and the sensation at its wheel is nice for a first "powerful" car. It is a great daily driver and can suits for longer trip.

I had this car in red , a GTi +. I tried the fiesta st but preferred the Polo cabin and tech. I got 41mpg and had no problems at all. It is a great size, the keyless system and infotainment work well. I never took it out of sport mode or tried the active suspension just left it in its firmest position. I did 7000 miles including trips to Europe and really liked it. I now have a M140i And while the engine is fun and the gearboxes ability to drop two gears to engage warp mode is compelling the heater is woeful and the brakes worse than the Polos. The Polo cabin is more spacious as well.

Had an Opel Adam S (or Vauxhall Adam S in UK) for a year and I must say, that this car was the most fun car to drive I've ever had. It's pretty small, has around 150hp and it just fun on normal roads as you can push it to it's limits almost everywhere

@@StephenButlerOne Fair point. In terms of Corsa you'd need to go for an OPC (had this one as well) as it's heavier. As the Adam S was in a short lease it was not mine but it made me discover why small, light cars with a decent amount of horsepower are so much fun and often preferred for normal roads than going for big supercars

@@Marcin120988 my girl just passed her test and got an old ka. I forgot how fun they was. Sadly she got a black box in it now so dad can't drive if. So now it just a miserable crappy car. But it does show hp isn't everything. My mother in law once had a pug 106, tiny engine, but loads of fun, 30 in the lanes felt like 70. I just got rid of a gtc and to have fun in it, you had to be doing stupid speeds. Same with the Leon ST FR 190 I now has. Also the Leon doesn't have the grip of the gtc. But Vx electronic I found terrible. Mine are also on lease. I'd never by a new car. But once in off the lease roundabout, I'd happily live with a fiesta St, proper fun car that is a decent daily. Just need to get rid of the kids.

What I loved about the polo (before the up was a thing) was it was a small sensible car to use to work. It looked aggressive, had a nice manual gearbox and a lovely buzz. I love driving my 2009 1.4 polo even though it only have like 85hp because it is so fun to rev, shift and play around with. This has become a fat, farting golf. If I were to buy a car for full price I would buy a 2009 polo before a 2019 polo even if they costed the same. I drove the 1.2 TSi, that engine was lackluster, had no real punch even though it is more powerfull. The new engines are just like it. It was better before... and I'm 22

I drove the last generation Polo GTI and I came to the same conclusion. It’s a fantastic little car but lacks soul, that little bit of pazzaz that makes you love a car. Now the Fiesta ST has soul is bucket loads, you get in it and before you’ve even started the engine it feels like an event.

It's the same but better in every way apart from the lack of cruise control that I never used anyway and rear drum brakes that don't seem to affect braking at all compared to the match edition. Also the chassis is different to the match and the response in steering when I first got it just put a huge smile on my face.

Conclusion not very exciting, what are you saying it is a Hatch Back with 200HP adaptive suspension, DSG gear box - I have owned one for 3 years and have owned Golf Rs 2010, Renault Meganas RS 270 - these cars were great and as you say exciting for 5 minutes on normal roads and then pain in the ass literally !! The Polo GTI is a great every day and real car for real people who drive on normal roads, NOTHING faster ! but if you want more and need more buy bigger but go to the track! Looking forward to the response from the UK, I have better roads in the south of france )

There are so many guys that just want to say "I am a man and a man must drive a manual" if you have owned a GTI you will know the DSG is always more fun, the manual is just dull. If you want a true manual hot hatch then its the Fiesta ST. If you buy a manual GTI you are just missing out!

Martin Allen Yes because the underlying car is better than the old Fiesta. But the previous ST would also be a better choice when it comes to driving fun alone compared to the latest Polo.

I’ve seen 46.9 once in my previous gen polo GTI (nursing it heavily on Swiss motorways) so it might not be too far off 47 😂
