Thank you for this information. My 2012 Sportwagen TDI just had a catostrophic pump failure at 115,152 MI in April of 2020. It was fully covered (I only had to pony up for the Timing belt kit and Labor). Thanks again for your videos.

The HPFP in my 2009 Jetta TDi (aka, "Das Booger") FAILED this past Saturday JUST after i filled the take up at a local watering hole! MIL came on (P0087 code among others that indicated fuel system issues), pre-glow light flashed on and off and car went into limp mode. Got it home and let it sit. Fired it up next day, allowed it to warm up and noticed that it was missing and it was emitting excessive black and sometimes a puff of greyish smoke out the tailpipe that was quite STANKY. Drove it for a bit and it immediately went into limp mode again. Pulled it back into the garage, shut it down and it would not fire after that. I was DOUBLY worried about this because I had just gone through two tank fulls of Propel HPR biomass diesel (love this stuff btw) that I got from a trip to Cally in March and as stated, the car $H!T the bed immediately after I put distillate Diesel back in the tank. Talk about the HOLY SHAT factor and being WHOLLY bummed! Anyway, didn't know about the issues with the HPFP and the subsequent warranty extension until I saw this video while doing online research following the failure. This gave me hope even though I did NOT opt for the misfueling guard back in 2013 when VW mentioned it to me (lesson learned, get EVERY recall fix that comes along period). Opened case #170523581 with VW USA and had my Little Black Booger towed to the local VW dealership today where I bought it back in 2011 using the VW TDi Goodwill Program complimentary towing service for fuel analysis and diagnosis. The verdict? It's COVERED!! WOOOT!!! WOOOOOOOT!!! It's gonna be there a few days while they get the parts, but am going to get a loaner in the meantime. A BIG thank you to the Humble Mechanic for taking the time to produce this MOST helpful video! I was REALLY worried I was gonna have to say "auf Wiedersehen" to my beloved little oil burner and go back to a gasser (I had JUST had the exhaust system upgraded to a RawTek high flow system along with a Malone Stage 2 performance tune ta boot AND a new stereo deck this past January)! Thanks guys! You ROCK!!!

Thanks for sharing this info! I would add: *Audi A3s are getting this, too *Audi letter came with reimbursement request form for past failure, as VAG was somewhat random in denying/OKing for a while *always save your fuel receipts *if past the extended warranty limits and/or you love your car, I would install the kits that reroute and filter the shrapnel when the hpfp fails. (The letter talks about denying coverage if there are mods that cause the failure, but I would bet you could find yourself denied if you have these systems that contain the failure.) *though it is a very big bill (and potentially dangerous, as the car can stall suddenly), these fail in a very small percentage of CR TDIs, which are overall awesome cars. I do have a few questions for you or anyone who knows for sure: 1. Lubricity additives are highly recommended in forums as the very best way to prevent hpfp failure (besides not fueling with gas, high % bio, WVO, or shady diesel). Would an additive like Power Service (silver or winter/white) show up as a contaminate in testing? 2. Letter does not say they will cover the damage caused to the rest of the fuel system by an hpfp failure, just talks about replacing the hpfp. Do you have access to more info than the letter, specifically showing they will cover the entire fuel system when damaged by the hpfp? I know they have been covering the whole mess when they (somewhat randomly) provided "good will" coverage for SOME owners with the failure, but they were also goodwilling much higher mileage vehicles and they seem to be trying to contain their expenses now.

Venezia1110 Thanks for the info on Audi. I didn't realize they had the same issue. The info we have is very much the same as customers got. My guess is, they will cover the entire repair, but that is just a guess. I have not done one under this new warranty extension

2011 Jetta with 78k miles... just lost my HPFP tonight. Great video, just wish you could have shown more detail about what a misfueling guard may look like. My car doesn't have any campaign stickers, but it does look like the filler may have been modified. Will call the dealer with a VIN to find out more. Thanks for posting detailed videos like this :)

Charles, I have been doing some research to do a oil and fuel filter change on my wife's 2012 Jetta TDI. When looking into the fuel filter change it said about using VCDS to prime the fuel system. I also found people saying if you didn't have VCDS you could jump power to the pump or fill the filter housing with fuel. Other also said they never bothered priming it at all. Knowing the cars have issues with the HPFP I didn't know if this could raise the likely hood of a failure. Thanks in advance for any input.

I have been doing my own fuel filter changes on my 2012 Jetta TDI, all that i do is fill the filter with diesel before dropping it in the canister and i have not had any problems, it starts up pretty fast, I rev it a minute (like less than 2000 RPM) and then let it idle for a few minutes and no problems at all.

Before I traded my TDI for a GTI I had to remove that stupid misfueling guard. My dealer told me to remove it because it was nearly impossible to refuel without spilling diesel fuel on the ground. Maybe it worked with some pumps, but most stations I go to had trouble with that adapter.

Really enjoyed our ‘13 Passat TDI, which we bought new, drove for 5 years, then sold back to VW under the Dieselgate settlement for only about $2200 less than we paid. But the fuel system issue was just one of several reasons I’m glad it’s behind us.

At work we have few mk6 golfs with the 1.6tdi cayc, i replaced fuel pump on all of them because they were leaking at the pulley shaft. I think even on a passat 2.0 i replaced the hpfp. I believe 2 engines were replaced at vw from timing belt failure due to fuel leaking on serpentine belt and timing skipped. Besides hpfp and egr are maintenance free to 300k km, only one had a problem with dpf, pretty good, well except hpfp. i can still see some fine metal particles on fuel filter wich is changed at 10-15k km. we did not reach out to vw to pay for the repairs. Cars are about 2012-2013.

The HumbleMechanic is absolutely right, I have a 2012 Jetta TDI, Had the modification done rather than the buy back, that was a huge mistake. The dealer and the VW website says i have the extended warranty. My check engine light comes on at about 90,000 miles, I take my car to the dealer and they tell me that i have metal filings in my fuel but then tell me that VW will not cover the warranty because there was no Misfuel Guard Kit installed. My advice is that if you have one of these cars that is supposedly under warranty and you do not have the Misfuel Guard kit on it, to get it installed now. I would not take it to the dealer to have the kit installed. The cost is so minimal compared to having to replace your HPFP and all the other components. The dealer did not care that i had never put gas in my rig, I bought the car new and have never put any gas in the tank and no one else has ever put fuel in my car. So it is not about possibly getting gas in the tank, it is VW using the Misfuel Guard as an excuse to not honor the Warranty that they say i had.

Just paid 12k for it used New pump over 500.00 injectors 538.00 Each, In tank pump 180.00 Have not found the fuel rail yet but i know it will cost an Arm & a Leg. What is one to do with one of these cars out of the extended warranty ? Esp here in a remote part of Alaska Can the Rail & lines & tank be cleaned instead of replaced ??? Great video! You really have helped me with many of your videos. I wondering if you could tell me some odd the symptoms of a failing fuel pump. I recently bought and took my 2009 Jettawagon TDI in for the 100,000 mile service and they recommended the fuel filter replaced, as it should be done every 20k miles. Since I'm new to working on diesel engines I had them do it. Ever since I did I can smell diesel fuel when I park inside my garage. I took it back and they told me my auxiliary fuel pump and something like a banjo bolt were the cause of the leak. I never smelled fuel before. It's like $580 in repairs.

So I have a 2012 Passat TDI. I just bought it and since it's now Jan. 2023 I may have missed the boat on the warranty extension. It has a fuel pressure issue. (P0087, P0088) It cranks and idles fine. I cleared codes and it ran like a champ for a few miles, then check engine light again and wouldn't go over 45-50 mph. Fuel filter was nasty and had some particles in the housing. Changed filter, cleaned the housing. Pulled fuel pressure regulator like in the video and it's totally clean. Should I take it to the dealer? I have only 80,260 miles.

I have a 2015 model and have the pump failure, the car is screwed.. The local garage told me that the pumps are the same until the new models starting from 2016 and they still go bad after a time and blow the metal all around the fuel.. Most problems happen before 2012 but they still use the same pumps and they are not improved for now. The garage had a lot of these problems recently from Golf to Audi A5. So sad that they know this is happening and don't come with a fix or drop the price ratings..

+Jimmy Beidler Follow-up - I picked up my 2011 Golf TDI (88K Miles) on Saturday!! VW sent the Diesel out for testing, results came back free of gasoline. VW - true to word did replace everything, honoring the 120K Mile extended warranty for the HPFP fix. They replaced the High Pressure Fuel Pump, High Pressure Fuel Lines, Fuel Rail, All 4 Fuel Injectors, Fuel Return Lines, Fuel Filter, Fuel Housing, and Auxiliary Fuel Pump. VW also gave me a new Jetta to drive while my car was in for the warranty work. I can not say enough good things about Ciocca Volkswagen and their service department.

These cars are continuing to have failures as the mileage on cars that have been sold back to the public after "dieselgate" , increases. I lost my FIRST HPFP at 109,000, while the car was still under the extended warranty..I lost THE SECOND HPFP at around 162,000. So....the replacement pump(s) that were supposed to be the "fix" for the "poor quality" OEM system didn't even last HALF of the mileage of the original low quality pumps. My car was showing hard-starting issues about 30K after the first pumps were replaced and had I been more aware of the 50k warranty the dealership extended on it's repair work.....I wouldn't have spent $4100+ getting ALL 3 pumps and the injectors replaced. There should be another class-action suit against VW about this problem. It's not isolated and it's not connected to gas contamination as VW would have us think. I used Diesel Kleen consistently in my fuel for lubricity and to reduce the ash going to the DPF....and I still had the second pump fail. I'm in Oregon and the compliance of fuel sources to keep their tanks clean is tightly regulated, so I'd have to conclude it's poor metallurgy in the pumps being supplied to the dealers. The consumer should not be the ones getting ripped-off over this. Mine is a 2011 JSW TDI. I maintain it meticulously. All recommended VW servicing on time or early.

Great information, so thanks. My question is; how can I prove that the fuel I bought was contaminated from the gas station? Both of our vehicles are diesel, and there is zero chance that we put gasoline in by mistake. And, going forward, there is no way to tell if the fuel I am buying is contaminated? Even if there were a common test kit, testing the fuel every time you fill up is absurd. 2012 Passat has only got a blue book of about 10 to $12k. If I am looking at a 6 to 8 thousand dollar repair job, I might as well take the car to a dismantler and get what I can for it. Any suggestions???

+HumbleMechanic - Thanks. I am in waiting for the dealer's results on the fuel test from the lab. Keeping fingers x'd, but expecting the worst. We keep the car garaged, so it is pristine condition. My backup plan in the worst case scenario is to sell it on ebay (with full disclosure), just to get rid of it. Too bad, as we were planning to keep it many years due to the durability of a diesel engine. I guess the durability part is a myth with VW.
@urnotserius2617
@urnotserius2617 8 жыл бұрын
HumbleMechanic - Wow! I guess we lucked out. The fuel was pure, so VW picked up the tab for the repair (just under $8k). I still think it is ridiculous that even the slightest amount of contamination would cause this catastrophic of a failure. Lesson learned. We are going to wait until VW makes the settlement on the lawsuits over pollution, and then dump the car. No more VW's for us.

urnotserius Common rail is not very forgiving on dirt/bad fuel. I'm diesel for life, but I know better that everything after the mk4 diesels is crap if your not careful. And diesels anymore with all the controls and extra expense aren't worth it to me, I don't drive enough Miles to see any payback for probably 8-10yrs. so I just picked up a 2014 Jetta gasser instead, it's supposed to pull mid 30s or so on the highway. For another 5-8mpg a diesel isn't worth it anymore. I keep the 91 Jetta coupe with its rattly diesel to fulfill the diesel niche these days.

just bought 2013 Tdi vw passat. I bought it from auction it couldn’t start, i took it to my local shop and they called me yesterday saying: your fule system is messed hpfp threw some metal shavings and everything needs to be replaced. Took my car to VW and they checked the fuel and dude who works there said “fuel didnt passed the quality test because there was some water probably from car sitting too long” and he said before we start anything we have to clean this first and add fresh fuel in it maybe its just fuel, and he said if it don’t start then we will replace everything else under warranty. I asked him i thouht water in fuel void warranty, he said that shouldn’t be an issue. They want to charge me $750 for flushing cleaning lines new fuel and filter because this is not coveted under warranty but everything else it is? what do u think ? please help

VW was covering higher mileage vehicles before this announcement. At least there is a definition of the policy now. Looks like owning a TDI with over 120,000 miles is a risky affair due to the cost of repair. This should also negatively affect resale of higher mileage cars too. It would benefit VW to come up with a more fail-safe fuel system design. If the pump fails, it doesn't create as much collateral damage. Replace the pump, and maybe the injectors and your done. Do you think placing a filter on the fuel return line would minimize the damage?

Matthew Gaines There is a company that makes a filter kit, I can't seem to find the link. Don't forget about the DPF having a 120k replacement interval. :/
@matthewgaines10
@matthewgaines10 9 жыл бұрын
HumbleMechanic The replacement of the DPF ($2000 max?) at some point is a reasonable expectation and cost. I heard some go at around 110k to 150k and others have over 200k and they are still going strong. On other hand, paying the price of an engine replacement ($7,000) without getting an engine is too stiff of a pill to swallow. This and higher mileage gasoline cars are going to kill the TDI market. These things used to be highly desirable new and used. I also have a 2015 Golf TDI and I'm going to try the filter out once the factory powertrain warranty is through. A 15+ year TDI owner has just shed a tear. :-( Once again thanks for the great content and enthusiasm for the community.

When you do the filter, let me know. I would love to hear how it goes. I think things are going to get worse for diesels. As they add more emissions controls to comply with govt regulations, the performance and reliability may go down.

HumbleMechanic The company is 2microntech. I was just about to order their kits when I got the letter on the warranty extension. I will definitely do it when I hit the end of this extension. The don't just make a filter kit, their flow adapter reroutes the hpfp so the high-pressure side receives its own clean fuel supply directly from the electric fuel pump, vs. the faulty stock design that passes fuel from the low-pressure side to the high-pressure side of the HPFP and allows for shrapnel to shoot into the rail, injectors, etc. when the pump fails. The filter kit, on the other hand, is needed to catch any metal particles that would normally be returned to the factory fuel filter (and on to the fuel tank, etc.)

The big question is, where to get quality fuel? The diesel nowwadays is so dry that it is not lubing the HPFP anymore. But adding two stroke oil to the fuel, to raise the lubing, will cut off the warranty, because you have but something in to the fuel. Dead case.

Help! My Jetta TDI hp Fuel pump just failed 2 days ago. What's worse I called VW and I am passed 200 miles of the extended 48,000 mille warranty. They won't cover it. I bought the car 5 months ago. I start reading about the problem. I was close to changing the fuel pump because I was told it could fail. It was going to cost me 2,700. Now it will cost me a lot more than the value of the car. Any ideas what I can do?

My wife's 2011 Jetta TDI, 101k miles, HPFP just went out. The fuel guard is installed. The VW dealer pulled a sample and already started claiming the sample smells like gasoline. If I believe they are mistaken what are my options? I was not there to verify the sample nor was someone whom I trust. We filled up at a new fuel station and have a record from the fuel station that it was in fact diesel. Video proof as well. Should I contact a lawyer or send off a separate sample myself?

I was a bit frustrated when the dealer immediately implied the fuel smelled like gasoline. Currently I'm in Afghanistan, military, and.my wife is dealing with them. We have been loyal customers and have always complied with the dealers suggested maintenance. Also, I had the fuel filter replace in early March. Just before I left the country. Do you think the new filter might have played into the HPFP going out? Maybe it stirred something loose...

+HumbleMechanic Just got word from the dealer our Jetta did in fact have diesel in the tank. VW will be replacing the entire fuel system due to the extensive amount of metal in the fuel system. Surprisongly they jad all parta on hand ecept one fuel line. I asked them to go ahead and replace the timing belt and water pump while they are at it. The car has 101k miles.... Thanks for all the great information! Thumbs up for Humble Mechanic

Somehow I have missed "why" the pumps are failing. Did the same company make the camshafts as the fuel pump? I have had 3 Touaregs never a problem, now drive Merc's. Have run all diesels (pickups and cars) for the last 25 years, maintenance is the key.

@@HumbleMechanic I must have been lucky, but always traded early. My trucks I run longer. I will admit, I once did accidentally put 25 gallons unleaded in my 30 gallon diesel tank (tailpipe flames were pretty at night). Bad lighting at dual gas/diesel pump island, just a bad setup, 2 sets of dual side by side pumps. Diesel - Gas and Gas - Diesel, pulled up to far for 1st pump and grabbed 3rd thinking it was diesel, oops, skyrockets at night. I drive a '13 S350 now and love it (glutton for punishment). Have a friend in Canada loves his Jetta Mk4 ALH with 435,000 kilometers. He is looking at an '06 with a 1.9 in it (cam is bad on #4) 130.000 kilometers, but he is getting it cheap. does run, but rough. He can fix the cam and lifters. He watches your channel, told him about the most needed tools and he said he saw it. Enjoying the content, can always learn something, thank you for the effort to put it out.

Blake, I have a 2015 model and have the pump failure, the car is screwed.. The local garage told me that the pumps are the same and they go bad after a time and blow the metal all around the fuel.. Most problems happen before 2012 but they still use the same pumps and they are not improved for now. The garage had a lot of these problems recently from Golf to Audi A5. So sad that they know this is happening and don't come with a fix or drop the price ratings..

This video is a couple of years old, but if you're a VW Diesel hobbyist, don't even let your common rail 2.0 anywhere near a VW dealer these days for a fuel guard or anything else for that matter with this emissions scandal nonsense.. They'll practically hold your car hostage for "software updates", stickers, fuel guards or whatever. They'll try to frighten you with the repair costs of a failed fuel pump, but the reality is that there is about a 1% failure rate on these fuel pumps and I'm past the warranty period anyhow. My 2011 Golf is still running the original "evil" factory software, original "evil" fuel tank opening, etc and it runs like a champ with lubricity added religiously every tankful. I'm going to drive it into the ground just like it is for however long that ends up being.
@HumbleMechanic
@HumbleMechanic 7 жыл бұрын
+scdevon I don't think most dealer folks care one way or another if you have the fuel guard in. But if you decline it, they have an obligation to tell you what may happen if you have pump failure. I've never heard of a dealer "holding a car hostage" for updates. It's as simple as saying you don't want the update. Unless you have some crazy dealers around you. Lol

HumbleMechanic that’s what I’m thinking is not 100% sure there is metal filings but not very much in the fuel filter and that hasn’t been changed for a very long time and a few bits in the tank but only can see them with the light really not much at all but I’m thinking this is science of the pump going as well and in the fuel pressure meter there is no metal filings at all but the car just won’t start I’ve primed all the pumps and I’m getting fuel at the fuel rail but my fuel pressure meter is buzzing very loud all the time when ignition is on going to replace this and see what happens going to start the car and see if I get any fuel come out the fuel rails that way as the Electric pump under the Bonnet is just for bleeding purposes I think and I do it through on vadcom
