Certainly the underside belly pan contributes greatly to the pursuit of lowering the coefficient of drag. I noticed in my Mk4 TDI 5speed Jetta just by installing a .095" sheet of ABS under the entire vehicle my mpg went from 48 to 57 overnight. This was in addition to adding 16" Walmart pizza pans on the factory 15" wheels, vortex generators along the rear roofline, aluminum rear diffuser (downforce not really needed on a fwd car) and front grill blockoffs. My best so far has been 744 miles on 11.9 gallons: 62.52 mpg while I typically achieve 56-58 mpg. What wonderful machines Volkswagen has and will forever continue to offer this world.

That's 3,76L/100km. Impressive. Without belly pan and keeping speed between 70-95 kmh (44-57mph) I get 3.97L/100km (59 mpg) in a 1.1L gasoline car.

Bring back an efficient car for the masses VW ! Where is today's equivalent of the Lupo 3L or Audi A2 1.2 ? This car is too expensive! Original idea with tandem seating got better MPG without electric drive. Weight of battery increases energy consumption per km.

@@MagnumLoadedTractor madness is thinking extra complexity and 2 drivetrains better than one. Drag a heavy dead battery around on ICE or drag a dead ICE around on battery. XL1 is not affordable for vast majority.

The aero of the xl1 aren't optimal. It's worse in every way that matters compared to the l1.

Add a boxer motor and the efficiency grows. If this type of technology is used in the same fashion.

it is about time but too costly I already thought of using lighter but harder/more durable/resilient materials before them. The auto companies just took an extremely long time to do anything. unfortunately I don't have their eq or funds to do it myself else I would make it myself instead of waiting for the industry to catch up to innovative ideas. They are still missing a few components to my ideal image of the future of cars themselves. but it is getting closer. unfortunately they can't imagine it yet. I bet someone has my idea already but haven't been able to do anything with it yet like me. and problem is the car companies don't want to let us have the new toys for cheap...it's always 5x-10x the material cost. so the 5k material cost is 25k-50k each. well I think the elio makes a better choice still at 6800 though even though it isn't as good as this one. main reason = initial cost + insurance. the markup is likely only 1.5x-3x instead of 10x markup from the material cost VW needs to make a lower consumer budget one as well then for the lower end sector. eventually they will catch on I guess. I hope the elio succeeds such that new cars can actually be affordable again. otherwise I'll just buy used never new.tyvm

Whats so wierd? Cyclists can go 60km/h with 0.8hp.. That car isn't probably that much less aerodynamic. My Seat Cordoba variant needs about twice the power to go 100km/h.

The original concept, driving prototype , pure diesel, not the fat pig here, probably really did that. Actual weight? Who knows. Somewhere below 380kg.a lcc rocket weighs that, without carbon n magnesium, without roof, but 150+hp. So. Let's say 300kg. A gsxr 750 crosskart is that... Plus driver. 380. Compare a honda innova125. 110ish kg plus rider.180. But worse aero
