Thanks for the informative video. Another compliant option would be after market coilovers. My KW V3s together with bigger tire side walls (I currently drive 245/45/R17) handle broken pavement like a dream. Reaction times of the KW dampeners are sooo much faster even if you hit a curb or a pothole, the car never unsettles. Add some negative camber to the equation, the clubsport s spindles are really really good for mk7 golfs, and you've got yourself a girthy looking curve eater. A bit of warning though, wider performance tires introduce quite a bit of road noise though.

I drive a Mk7 Golf R Dsg on 18 inch Michellin Pilot Sport 4's on passive dampers and I find the ride a little brittle at low speed on uneven surfaces (but much more comfortable than when on the original Bridgestone Potenzas) but the set up comes together so well at higher speeds where everything smoothes out brilliantly and the handling and ride become sublime. I have never driven a DCC equipped car but despite the brilliance of the passive set up something tells me not to, as I just know I would like it and miss it when it was gone.

That's a great video - having owned a Mk 7 GTD with 19"s & passive dampers, I'd wholeheartedly agree that it's not good on poor surfaces! There's so much about the Mk8 that I just don't "get" though, although I fully appreciate the chassis is superior to the Mk7/7.5. However, I don't think I'd be in the market for a GTi now (although I almost bought a new Mk7 once) - I kind of need an estate, so it's an R for me!

Had the 18” non-DCC GTI, then the 19” DCC Cupra VZ. I found that lowering tyre pressures in the non-DCC car softened off the low speed pothole crashing. For the DCC car I keep the tyre pressures high for fear of damage, and it’s still significantly softer than the non-DCC car on most roads in my route. Maybe the tyres (all season Toyo vs Vredestein in my case) play into my perception too. My conclusion is still DCC is worth it - gives so much more breadth to the car’s abilities in long term use.

Interesting...I have a mk6 GTI with DCC and only ever use comfort mode for low speed driving down very rough pot-holed roads or un-made carparks or fields at festivals, it's far too "floaty" to want to use it for any spirited A or B road driving. I keep in normal 90% of the time, the rest in sport, which is fine on back roads unless there's potholes. I'm on 17's though.

Excellent comparison! Especially liked the camera shot of the DCC vs normal dampers, never saw that before on any channel. Having DCC certainly makes it easier to live with stiffer performance tires. Active dampers have certainly come a long way in the last 20 years: many reviewers are blown away at how pleasant the ride is in the new Corvette C8 with dynamic suspension. Many have compared it to a Bentley, which is astounding considering the low profile tires on the Corvette.

It's clever stuff assuming the manufacturer has the budget to develop it properly. At around £1000 on the VW range it's a bargain, there isn't much else that influences the driving of the for every second it's in action.

Having gone from a Mk7 GTD on 19" wheels & passive dampers to a Mk 7.5 R Estate on 19" wheels & DCC, I'd agree - the ride of my R is far, far superior, it's actually a great grand tourer car (even on "normal" setting). The Continental SportContact6 tyres also seem a lot quieter than the (same sized) Pirelli Pzero tyres on my GTD were.

Thanks for this great review, it`s what I was looking for mostly. I`m gonna order MK 8,5 GTI (not clubsport) with 17" default alloy wheels and I couldn`t still decided in terms of DCC. I`d appreciate your comments for 17" standard rims and DCC relation, because everywhere it`s mentioned regarding 18-19s all the time. I want a comfy ride and I drive mostly on not perfect EU suburban areas. I`m also considering doing a lot kms on highways. I`m not a person who drags the car from one corner to other, really.. I`m basically buying GTI to have a considerably "quicker cruiser". I`m certain for 17"s but I really appreciate your quick feedback regarding DCC with or without 17"s in facelifted MK8(265 hp). Cheers from Prague!

Great video Andrew. DCC was the best thing I specified for my car. Never underestimate the ride quality for any passengers (Mrs/Mr & kids). They don’t get the same connection to the car as the driver and a rock hard firm ride will just lead to complaints & moans which spoils the car for everyone. Sharper throttle has always been a part of sport mode but it doesn't make the car accelerate faster, it just increases the throttle response. In some cars it's night and day different but in GTI CS it's not that different, probably because it's sharper in normal model (comfort) than the Octavia. It's a bit of a gimmick that well setup cars don't really need.

Dynamically speaking, yes it has - the Mk 8 has clearly moved on from the Mk 7/7.5. Tech - wise, I just don't"get" the Mk 8 at all. Putting the functions all onto a touch screen format just smacks of cost saving - which is fair enough, it's just not for me - to the extent that when my 7.5 R estate is due to go back, I'll just buy it, rather than go for a Mk 8. The prices also need to get more "real" too (but that will happen over time, I'm sure).

Loved them, Fords were easily the best everyday cars in the 1970’s, but compared to today’s they are very basic ( which was great because you could work on them). Today’s cars are basically the same but much more sophisticated, the ride quality of today’s cars, the mpg, performance, the bodywork rust protection, the electrics are hugely better. The dcc is a fantastic bit of kit, whether it falls to bits early or not we’ll have to wait and see.

@volkswizard

I'm not sure that's what I said. I didn't reference DCC 8R much apart from saying that the steering/front axle didn't feel as sharp, pointy, or accurate as the GTIs. I did wonder if the DCC shocks might be to blame for that and the Clubsport with DCC would lose some of that magic but it didn't which made me conclude that the 8R was set up that way to be a bit more laid back presumably for high speed stability on the autobahn and also to allow its torque vectoring to influence its cornering more.

The Cupra has been priced aggressively but there are 2 issues;firstly the VW discount available makes the CS cheaper and with the spec equalised it won't be very far apart. Secondly the Golf still has that wonderful classless vibe about it - look it at this way, would a millionaire by a Cupra as daily alternative to their supercar? Unlikely. Would they buy a GTI, yes. However I'd like to try the Cupra and see for myself. I did email Seat UK about a Formentor 310 loan but never heard back so not sure how realistic getting the Leon will be but I will ask.

Found the discussion at the end great and raises questions about comfort and drive ability/ride quality vs looks. Looking at an m135i and the dilemma is would you recommend the adaptive suspension on the m135i? Problem is you have to have it with 18” wheels though, as it cannot come with 19” on adaptive. So, the better looking, but firmer riding 19” and passive? Or 18” and adaptive?

So tricky! There is an appeal in the simplicity of a passive damper car. What I learned with this video is that firm is like eskimos and snow, there are many varieties of it in cars. For example some are firm whatever the speed, others loosen up. Try and test drive for yourself as what is acceptable is very subjective. I'm lucky as my wife has a Mk2 TT on 19s and passive dampers so for her my car's ride is plush :)

Odd the wheel size I agree, on the 18' you'll likely get better ride comfort (DCC aside). If it is a heavy daily I would say DCC, if it is more of a weekend/fun car go passive. Also what is the price difference? Is it something you could perhaps aftermarket into 19' later on? DCC is indeed a lot more obvious in its working on 7 and 7.5 R because the car is setup very different. I'd guess spring rates are softer than 7.5 GTI while Mk8 GTI has even harder spring rates. You've got to be able to overcome the spring tension before the damper influences the ride and that's Mk8 with and without DCC takes some speed before it starts to loosen up.

@@mnl493x hi, if you look up the pro’s and cons of 18 vs 19” wheels on KZbin I think you’ll find that it boils down to these two factors, 1) 19” wheels look good, I think most people would agree on that 2) 18” wheels handle and ride much better. Handling and ride quality should trump ‘looks’ when it comes to any performance car or you won’t be getting the maximum performance and handling that the car is capable of, when I see a Golf R or similar with 19” wheels I cringe. Another lesser point to consider is that 19” wheels require more expensive tyres and I believe braking distances are not as good as 18” but don’t wore me on that one. My cars with 19” wheels are seen just ‘cruising’. The choice is, looks or performance?

I'm waiting on a CS which will have 18s but I added in DCC anyways, having that for the future and maybe it will help with residuals, aslo having a "Ring mode" is good to show off with. Now back to which 18s, aftermarkets or OE like Pretoria 18s?

I've recently gone from Assym 5 to SS on my non-DCC mk7 R and the ride is so much firmer ... particularly at low speeds. I think of both cars were on the same tyres you'd notice the difference even more! Great video as always

Thanks for the feedback. It's funny because I'd guessed/hoped that 18" SS would ride the same as 19" Assymetric 5 and I was right. I do notice a slight loss of steering directness due to maginally more flex in sidewall but it's still good. If I was pushed I'd say it drove better on the awful looking 18s because of that hence why the think man's choice would be higher offset 18"s with Supersports. I love the wheels so much though so no regrets, it's still awesome!

I think if DCC is that much of a "must" as all the reviewing "experts" (and assorted moaners) say, the car would surely be fitted with it as standard. Otherwise why bother fitting passive dampers at all?? Anyway, I have a MK8 GTi (245PS) from dealer stock, no DCC and I think it's perfectly fine (and you want to see some of the roads around here) I had a 20 plate Audi S3 (8V) on passive dampers prior to the GTi and it was as hard as hell. Now if ever there was a car that was a "must" for DCC, then that was definately it. I'm the same age as you too Andrew, so I suppose it's a subjective/personal choice thing at the end of the day.

@@volkswizard proof for me of just how good the passive set up is on the MK8 GTi is when it's compared with the S3 that it replaces. No such worries in the GTi, which is totally composed and comfortable. VW just seem to do it better than Audi in certain areas, who with the A3/S3 range at least - seem to think that throwing the hardest springs and dampers at it is somehow providing a "sporty" ride.

Hello Andrew if your planning to keep your CS for a while and doing a number of track days you could do something similar to what Joe Achilles has done with his new M4 and get your chassis set up how you want it on the CS and not how it's set at the factory, just an idea but be warned its expensive and also would you want to invalidate the warranty.

I'll have to watch that video. I thought you were going to say chassis setup would not invalidate warranty or be expensive (compared to traditional swapping out hardware mods). It's still primarily a road car for me and I suspect the changes from 7.5 TCR to Mk8 CS are actually enough for the odd track day already (stiffer springs, increased negative camber plus bigger brakes). We shall find out in mid July! I'm also toying with a Mk7 CS project which would be 50/50 track road use and no warranty issues.

Maybe Phil, but the passive damper car feels a little bit better in certain situations, it never rolls for a start, it's too subtle to try and explain in a video. DCC 8CS (ring mode), TCR DCC (normal mode) and 7CS (Passive damper) all roll quite a lot as they settle into a turn. They've done a mega job with the passive setup & it works on most of the roads I drive. If I lived in Germany where the roads are consistenly smooth, and never went on a proper track (where Sport +++ would be good) I'd be 100% happy with DCC. On Mk7 it's a different story. I genuinely am not swayed one way or the other and that's not because I own a passive damper car, I could get out of it really easily right now and just sit back and wait for a DCC CS to arrive later in the year.

Individual has 4 narrow letters (I i i l) while Nurburgring only has one narrow one and one more extra letter so; individual nurburgring So you can see above this has the effect of being 2 letters longer than a word that's already a tight fit.
