Shaky Shimada got me 😂😂 Fun fact about Coach Ukai's "Go change the momentum" advice to Yamaguchi: In the manga (chapter 64), there's extra scenes that didn't get adapted into this anime episode. After he said that to Yamaguchi, coach Ukai was thinking to himself: "Did I say the right words, did I reassure him? I didn't pressure him too much, did I?". And it was Takeda sensei who reminded him to not show his uneasiness in front of his players. I personally really like how the author, Furudate sensei chose to highlight how even someone like Coach Ukai can have his own self-doubt as a coach and as an adult!

@@faaizsiddiqui7906 I think Noya meant that even if they end up losing, they need to fight their hardest anyways. As if you are running to get somewhere, but end up not getting there due to maybe exhaustion or running out of time, in the moment you fall because of it, if you are putting your effort on getting there, you will fall forwards since that's where your momentum and intention is going. On the contrary, if you just give up because the goal seems far, you might fall on your ass. That's how I understood it, at least haha idk how good of an explanation that was

If you notice coach Donny, every time they have a timeout the Seijoh's coach did not give any advice to the team (except on the broad attack of hinata), it was mainly Oikawa's advice and direction. This shows how much of an experience and on-court coaching Oikawa has in his gamestyle.

I've been thinking a lot about the "next time" lines, and how they can be encouraging. A lot of people (especially myself) suffer from an "imposter syndrome", where we think we don't belong where we are, and at any moment someone might notice we don't belong and kick us out. You can suffer this in sports, in work, or in any hobby. Karasuno has some great players - Kageyama, Hinata, Asahi, Daichi, Nishinoya, and others - and the rest of the team might feel like "I'm not good enough, I'm not part of the starting lineup, and at any moment they might realize how bad I am and kick me out." This attitude is POISON, and it kills your desire to work hard, improve, and contribute to the team. When Yamaguchi goes in for the pinch serve, it feels like his entire future on the Karasuno team is on the line. He HAS to get this point, or ELSE! And he FAILS! But the promise of "next time" is like saying "You failed, but it's ok. We're not kicking you out, we're not rejecting you. We know how hard you've been working, and you WILL get another chance to prove yourself." This is the same boost in confidence that Sugawara got when he was pulled out of the match earlier - "we'll use your serving again in the future, so don't feel like you've been eclipsed by Kageyama." It's yet another flavor of the common theme that many of the characters feel, although most acutely expressed by Hinata and Kageyama - they want to keep playing volleyball! Work hard so you're put on the court, work hard so your team can win and play more games. Stay on the court!
@iizouu
@iizouu 3 жыл бұрын
I think Furudate eally made the idea of "next time" a running theme/motif in Haikyuu. there are definitely a lot of instances where he snuck it in, including these moments wtih Suga & Yams ofc. huge manga spoilers (post-s4) below. the importance of "next time" is also heavily emphasized after the Kamomedai loss. Takeda's bench talk about preparing for the next opportunity, the recruiter's words at the end of the day (something like "today you're the losers, what will you be tomorrow?"), Ukai's advice afterward focusing on becoming stronger for next time. it was also mentioned during the MSBY v. Alders game by Kageyama, he wanted to play against Hinata again and again. iirc Kageyama lost that particular point too, but he was already looking forward to the next game/play. the list goes on lol
@silviaghirri
@silviaghirri 3 жыл бұрын
@@iizouu Ikejiri, after they lost, asked Karasuno to win for them too, because they didn't have the possibilty to play again. Terushima said that if they hadn't lost they would be playing another game. Takeru was shown crying and saying that he wanted to play another time. Tendou said goodbye to his paradise (volleyball, the only place where he felt accepted because he was good at it) because he couldn't play any official game anymore. There are countless examples of a "next time", but also countless examples of the sadness that comes when you can't have another one. That's why one of my favourite lines is the one that Futakuchi said to Oikawa before their game. When Oikawa said that he doesn't need to worry because he still has "next times" to come as a 2nd year, Futakuchi said that it doesn't matter (you can think of next times only when your current one has finished, otherwise the same thing that happened to the Ohgi Minami team would happen to you)

Coach just a little correction in the end: pinch server's name is Yamaguchi, Shimada is his teacher's name! About Oikawa's kneepad, during the story there's no mention about it, so this is not a spoiler: the white one should bee an orthopedic brace. The author of Haikyuu, Furudate, always gave us some trivial information about his characters at the end of his manga chapters.

I think this was mentioned at the start of season 1 episode 7 when Karasuno had a practice match with Seijoh. The reason why Oikawa was late in the match was because of his strained knee (based on Netflix subs); hence, the white bandage, instead of a kneepad.

Regarding the kneepad, I don't remember Furudate had confirmed it's an brace or not, it mostly is fans-interpretation. Yes at some point (the first practice match) he does have kneel injury ("just a light sprain") [edit: should be an ankle injury, my bad], but again, Furudate had never confirmed he has some a long term/long lasting problem on his kneel or not. I’ve always wanted to play volleyball but didn’t truly get the chance to until 2016, I was 23 years old - my advice is don’t be afraid to play with those who are better than you. Some of my friends who started later have improved drastically from playing with us. Of course, there’s a time and place to do it...I wouldn’t recommend intruding on the advanced player’s trainings or scrims. If you are able to book a court and find a handful of more experienced players who are willing to play/teach you, the game will be enjoyable in no time.

As far as for wearing one kneepad. It's pretty common, many players only go on one knee, so the second one is unnecessary and many just don't wear it, because they don't use it. I use both, but most players prefer one side for different reasons. After I hurt my right leg in game I always tug down my right pad, so I won't use my right knee on the ground so much the rest of the game.

'Ryu' is Tanaka. Tanaka's name is "Tanaka Ryunnosuke". Japanese people call each other by their family (last) name as a form of politeness. So in this case, "Tanaka" is his last name and "Ryunnosuke" is his first name. Mostly close friends or family members call them by their first name. (30:49) Nishinoya calls out to Tanaka by his first name. I think its because they are second years and have been playing together for quite a long time which made them a lot closer. And Nishinoya calls those whom he is close with by their first name like "Ryu", "Shoyo (Hinata).

Actually, Oikawa's knee injury isn't canon. I looked it up to try and figure out just what was wrong with it and to theoretically see how long it may take to heal, but it turns out that the whole "horrible knee injury" thing was made up by the fans after they learned it was brace. The only injury we know for sure about is his ankle when he first appeared, the brace could just as likely be for preventing an injury as much as covering one.

@@andreaprochowski4717 this is what confuses me because for so long I’ve been waiting for the exposition in the anime to reveal where fans say he has a knee injury but his arc kinda “completed” already and I still cant find where in canon it was stated he has a knee injury. I’ve even searched the manga and I still got nothing, just fan speculations. I have friends who play basketball and one wears a knee brace but it’s just mostly for protection as prevention rather than holding a previous injury. So I agree that MAYBE Oikawa is in a point of sustaining an injury so it’s a preventive measure rather than an aid for “having a horrible knee injury”

I think he did miss that Oikawa never skipped practice though. He mentioned it in one of the earlier episodes and I think it was cause he shows up late to the practice game. But I think he missed that Oikawa had an injury that he'd gotten checked out and came back when he was cleared to play. Regarding his attitude, the problem is that it kind of gets played up in the beginning of the anime for plot sake (so that Karasuno and the viewers don't know right away how seriously he takes Volleyball). You never actually see him late to something to flirt with girls after that one scene, but its one of the first ones you see him in other than the practice match. He does have some other personality issues (e.g. his attitude to Kageyama) but I think he gets a worse rep than he actually is.

Whenever Haikyuu introduces a new skill or position in the show, they do a great job in explaining how it works, so that people who start casual fans (like myself) end up learning technical terms and it’s so much for fun to follow the game when you can almost commentate yourself. And drift into watching actual games. Also, in the show, all the high schoolers playing at this time are dubbed “The Monster Generation” because of all the advanced/pro skills they play at their level.

Oikawa is my favourite character but you guys need to remember that Coach is watching from a coach's perspective. He obviously empathizes with the situation but at the end of the day, it's not an excuse for Oikawa's actions. He's right. A coach has to look at whether excusing any one player's actions sets an example for other players. Any player who acted like that in real life would be benched quick.

The two color braces that Oikawa wears never get explained in the anime, but the author, Furudate, often aded bits and trivia about the characters at the end of the episodes, and about he's knee pad he wrote "the white pad on his right knee is, in fact, not a knee pad but a knee supporter". Like Iwaizumi said this episode, Oikawa has a tendency to overwork himself, so it's not surprising that at some point he might have hurt his knee to the point that he now needs permanent support on it when he plays. Another fun tidbit about this about him, his favorite quote is "If you're going to hit it, hit it until it breaks" and that.... that really shows the kind of person he is, really.

I don't know if anyone has explained it but- Oikawa has a condition called Jumper's knee (I don't if it canon but Reddit made a thread, what is canon is that Oikawa does have a boo boo knee and since Jumpers Knee is common for Volleyball players we are assuming that's what he has), also known as patellar tendonitis, which is a condition characterized by inflammation of your patellar tendon. This connects your kneecap (patella) to your shin bone (tibia). Jumper's knee weakens your tendon, and, if untreated, can lead to tears in your tendon. Most Fans think he got it from overworking himself to the point he actually hurt himself. As someone who has friends with Jumper's Knee, I'm glad to see it represented. That's why when we meet him for the first time he's late cause he got injured as the coach said he did something dangerous- I love Oikawa

About the recycled shots I have to say that it's normal in anime, you'll find it quite a lot 😅 Especially "simple" shots like a ball spinning in the air. It's normal to try to work smart and not hard; prepare 2 or 3 of those scenarios, change them a lil if needed and move on quickly. I actually don't mind it if it's done well and is not too obvious.

Yeah, I actually quite like HQ's recycled shots, since they don't feel forced. For example Asahi's approach from the front angle, that one is reused but, since that action doesn't necessarily have to change, the repetition doesn't feel lazy, it's just there because, well- what else could you offer? XD the animation team uses those shots smartly, I'd say.

"Kageyama is trying to be the best player he can be" That is so true, for kageyama volleyball is really important, but I won't talk more, you'll find out later in the show. PD: I love your reactions coach, I started playing volleyball 8 Years ago when I was 10 years old, I played in representation of my country when i was 14-15, it was in this period of time when I discovered haikyuu and it served as insipiration for me because I was bullied but volleyball helped me to make friends and to be more confident about myself, but because of things I can't handle I moved out to another country and it was really hard to me because for an young athlete as long as you are known, you have to start, not from the very bottom but from a very low position. Because of my experience I was able to quickly join the high-school team but I only studied the last 6 months of that year until graduation. We did very well at the local inter-highschool tournament and it made me more known, cuz nobody knew me and I was like "the new kid who came from another country to shake volleyball in the whole city" I was super happy but unfortunately there is no active regional league team to be part of, and the local authority organization for volleyball was unactive too, because here volleyball in national terms isn't very important, but it is for me. everything just catched me up, the fact that I graduated made me unable to play for a highschool team and things were getting worse, I got in college and I thought "I'm gonna put my best effort to get into the college team" I went to the tryouts and even tho my techique was very good I couldn't make it to the team because of my physical (I got overwheight at vacations) that's what the coach said he also invited me to train in the volleyball recreative activities and to go to the college team so I could go to tryouts nex semester. The team members saw everything good in me and when tryouts were over they asked me if i made it in and when I was coming back to play more (I feel that the team members wanted me to be part of the team) but then the pandemic and quarantine attacked and made me unable to play or to tryout and I thought my days of volleyball were over. Right now some courts opened and I started to play again and I couldn't be happier and I'm really happy I discovered your channel because it's helping me to train again. I really hope I can make it to the team when pandemic is over, cuz volleyball is part of my life and I don't want to quit. Thanks for your time, I hope you keep making great volleyball content.

Hi Coach! You might have missed but the name of the pinch server and the one who missed the serve (38:50) is Tadashi Yamaguchi (also a first year, childhood friend of Tsukki) and the one who taught him how to do jump serve is Shimada at 28:09, the owner of the convenience store (Shimada Mart). On the other hand, what they mean by "next time" is like a subtle reassurance that the team will win in that game, and they would proceed to the next game thus the phrase "next time" is a lot more meaningful not only for Yamaguchi (the pinch server) but also to the whole team. It's like an encouragement said by Daichi, that's why Coach Ukai said that "I'm no match for him" 27:25 (referring to Daichi's skills in encouraging or lifting up the spirits of the team).

It was like watching Haikyuu all over again with a friend who just really loves volleyball.. Thank you for your hardwork coach Donny! You have no idea how inspiring your words are. I don't even play volleyball but watching your reaction videos helped me understand why I love this anime.

Even if a lot of people likes a cocky childish bad loser it doesn't make the character any better. I don't think it was even designed to be liked but to show how being good looking and good at volleyball could charm people even being an asshole (like some kind of asshole idol). And the fanbase that supports him with no critizism is part of the joke without even knowing it. Obviously the Oikawa has also good traits (mostly towards improving himself as a player or to support his teammates), but aside from that... meh. At least in the penultimate arc he's nicer.

@@OscarIna0fTimeVODs "a cocky childish bad loser", "part of the joke without even knowing it" and that said everything about you. I want to remind you everything you said is your own subjective opinion, because it looks like you want to put it here as an objective reality. @@OscarIna0fTimeVODs There's a difference between liking him as a person and liking him as a character. I didn't like him at first but I love his character and he does grow over the course of the series, to the point that he proudly tells Ushijima to "watch out for my junior." He's not a nice guy, he's childish, but he is a great character and ultimately, an underdog. He's not a genius like Kageyama. He practiced so hard he permanently injured his knee. And still he has to come to terms with the fact that Kageyama's going to overtake him. Such a great story.

Might contain spoiler; I didnt like him at first. I started to look up Oikawa after S2. I once needed to teach my new beginner VB group, and of course I have to play setter, the first character/person come to my mind is Oikawa. Imo Oikawa is a smart coach rather than brute force coach

@@OscarIna0fTimeVODs I disagree that he wasn't designed to be liked. characters like Oikawa are usually popular (Dazai from Bungou Stray Dogs & Kise from KNB come to mind). he's a very well-written antagonist so it works, and as you said he has good traits as well as bad ones. it's a matter of opinion whether the good ones outweigh the bad ones. I also think he was meant to be likable, because Furudate made it so that the other characters don't take his assholish/petty behavior seriously (off the court), and they often call him out or scold him for it. it's a way of softening the audience's reaction to negative character traits, even if it doesn't work for everyone all the time. I wouldn't call Oikawa cocky either, because he admits many times that he's not as skilled as some other players. it's more like he puts on a show of bravado. it's understandable if that still rubs you the wrong way, but cocky isn't the right word. edited for grammar/clarity

just a minor but interesting detail at 30:16 where a Seijoh player named *Kunimi* did that diving receive and Kageyama flinched. Kageyama was surprised that Kunimi made an effort to chase and receive the ball because back in middle school (going back to the first episode), Kageyama criticized/scolded his teammate *(Kunimi)* for not chasing the ball and letting hinata score a lucky point because they were way ahead in points. btw Love your reactions and incites!!! Edit: Fixed my bold and grammar error ;-;

Oikawa defenders will try and say that Oikawa's white kneepad is actually a knee brace, but there's no proof of that and the only injury that was mentioned was an light ankle sprain (nothing involving knees). There isn't an official explanation for the 2 different colours but it's most likely just an aesthetic decision

@@DarkNorthEmperor I guess that it's because he's good looking. I don't like to think that way but it's the only explanation that I can come up with. ***SPOILER*** People even like Terushima, Johzenji's captain, because he has a tongue piercing and he's good looking, even tho he was shown literally harassing Kiyoko... @@silsail No, it's not because he's good looking. He's not a nice guy but he is a great character. He's an ordinary guy fighting against the extraordinary: Ushijima and Kageyama. He loses both times but he fights harder than anyone else and he grows to the point that he finally claims Kageyama as his junior. He doesn't have to be a nice person to have a great story.

5:14 The reason why Oikawa is wearing different kneepads is that he had a knee injury from overworking, it was mentioned way back when he first showed up that he had an injury and had to warm up carefully. Iwaizumi also mentioned that he's overworking himself in the flashbacks

a common fan theory for oikawa's mismatched knee pads is that he had a knee injury in the past, so one of them is a knee brace. It ties well into his habit of overworking himself and his ankle injury in the practice match, so it's spread as canon by a lot of people. (it's also great angst potential in fanfics lol)

not sure if someone else told you, but Shimada is the name of the grocery store that the serving teacher works at. The pinch server's name is Tadashi Yamaguchi, and Yamaguchi is probably my favourite player on the team, even if he doesnt get as much screen time. Being the only first year not on the starting line-up i love how he doesnt give up, but keeps looking for a way that he can contribute to the team, despite not being as tall as Tsukki, as talented as Kageyama or as crazy hard-working as Hinata. The way he works at his serves while everyone else is doing crazy quicks etc. is really inspiring, and even though he was super nervous and put in at the most intense point in the game, he still hit a really aggressive jump-float that just got unlucky by hitting the net, when he could have easily focussed on just getting it over and not been as aggressive. I hope you keep a lookout for him going forward because when he does get his moments, i think they are really special.

The reason for oikawa's different color kneepads isn't declared in the show, but the white one is not kneepad, he wears one knee pad on one leg and the other is tube grip/ knee braces.. Remember coach donny first appearance of oikawa he came late to their practice match vs karasuno because he was injured (when you thought he came late because he's getting special treatment lol )
