When Iwaizumi told Oikawa "someone who can't see the opponent standing right in front him, can't defeat the opponent that lies beyond", it wasn't because Oikawa was targeting Nishinoya, it was because Oikawa was busy thinking about getting to the finals of the tournament and beating Ushiwaka (the best spiker in the prefecture) and his team, Shiratorizawa, (which has denied Oikawa the chance to go to nationals ever since his junior high days days in Kitagawa) instead of focusing on the match at hand. Oikawa only saw the match versus karasuno as a stepping stone to his ultimate goal, which Iwaizumi pointed out was a mistake.

I love this part of Japanese culture. When seeing someone (like your parents) after a long time the first thing they will say is "I'm so happy to see you, are you eating well?" Eating and sleeping are seen as necessary to support your hard work. In Japan hard work comes first, we may forget to eat or sleep. In America over-eating and over-sleeping come first and we may forget to work...

Hey Coach! A slight misinterpretation since all the names get very confusing: In Oikawa's mind, Karasuno is not an enemy. They are just a roadblock before they get to Shiratorizawa, the best school in their region. Oikawa has a vendetta against Shiratorizawa and has vowed to defeat them this year. He gets so wrapped up in this that he even misses a serve. Iwaizumi points it out, saying to respect the current opponent and not take any match for granted, and that snaps Oikawa out of it. Like you said, K-Pop is super lucky to have Iwa

The shot of kageyama looking at kunimi and oikawa is so powerful. It shows how Kageyama is afraid of Oikawa because he can communicate and understand his teammates in a way he himself cannot. He sees how natural it is for Oikawa which is such a great contrast to how Kageyama may have natural intuition for the game he doesn't have that natural skill for recognising others mentality. In this instant Kageyama realises how miserable he must've made Kunimi feel.
@animagamer23 жыл бұрын
This is a great point! We always focus on player's "natural talents", but to someone like Kagayama who has tons of this natural talent someone like Oikawa is enviable.
@allenh11373 жыл бұрын

Kunimi is low key one of the smartest players in the entire series. He gives off a vibe of nonchalance and disinterest when in reality, he is being smart and conserving his energy till the end of the match. I like how the writers do a great job of restricting Kunimi's screen time just enough so you get to see him make a dig every now and then, but you don't see him go for a spike till the very end of the match so you kinda forget he is there until Oikawa starts to involve him more.
@Nunelii3 жыл бұрын
But does Kunimi realized how much he has hurt Kageyama too ? Okay, Kageyama has too much endurance and sometimes lacks of communicating skills, but don't forget that Kindaichi and Kunimi are lazy. And making Kageyama realize his "excesses" in the middle of a final and in front of everyone wasn't the best way to help him. Just take Kageyama's place and imagine seeing your world collapse in such a cruel way... for him, who already had struggles to communicate with people, it had been the final straw to his downfall. They could have tried to talk with him and make him someone better, but they only worsened him. At least at some point Kindaichi realized it.
@TrianaNero3 жыл бұрын
About the situation with Oikawa's serve - he was basically thinking too far ahead, about Ushijima (the strongest spiker in the prefecture, Ushiwaka is his nickname; his team are the current champions), who's been keeping his team down for years now. That's why he missed on the serve, and that's why Iwaizumi told him to focus on the current opponents. (A small thing, but Shimada is the name of a Karasuno alumnus who's teaching Yamaguchi how to do the jump float serve! The person talking to Kageyama and Hinata in the end is Takeda Ittetsu; his official position is an "advisor" of the club.) The end of this game is so poetic, much like Haikyuu!! in its entirety. Takeda and Ukai are the true MVPs this time though. For all the times Takeda would get embarrassed by his poetry, his words really get through so well, and Furudate (the author of Haikyuu) has recently said that “failure is not a proof of your weakness” is one of the messages they wanted to convey the most in the story (and the importance of nutrition as well!) Didn’t expect the meal scene to hit me again, given that I’ve watched it so many times, but oh god did it hit me. Shut out to Yuki Hayashi for that amazing soundtrack ;__; (it’s called “Grow Stronger”, or 強くなれ in case anyone would like to listen)

Duuude. Coach hating Oikawa's fangirls never gets old. He's like Tanaka's soul mate. It was really noticeable how into this game Coach was. Visible excitement at the plays, empathy at the loss, right up to choking up at the last meal. It's hard not to love this.

I really like the character of Takeda. I always believe that no matter how unskilled you are or foreign to something, you always have a role to play and you always have something that you can do. He is not good at volleyball but his persistence to keep the g available for practice, for setting up practice matches, for looking for a coach, and for preparing the players are a treasure to watch. He also keeps on learning as well in order to be able to support the boys more. He is an adviser any team would be lucky to have.

Hey coach! I would love if you could watch the ovas after each season, and since this first one is coming to a close, I’m posting the order (at least imo, could be different, you can totally search it up if you want!) of the seasons/ovas: 1. Season 1 (Haikyuu!!) 2. OVA 1 (Haikyuu!!: Lev Genzan!/Haikyuu!!: The Arrival of Haiba Lev!) 3. Season 2 (Haikyuu!! 2nd Season) 4. OVA 2 (Haikyuu!!: vs. “Akaten”/Haikyuu!!: vs. Failing Grade) 5. Season 3 6. OVA 5 (Haikyuu!!: Riku vs. Kuu/Haikyuu!!: Land vs Sky) 7. Season 4 (Haikyu!! To the Top) 8. Season 5 (Haikyu!!: To the Top 2nd Season) I only added the ovas i knew were manga canon, not sure about the other ones as ive never seen them. The movies, skip them, they’re basically just recaps of what has happened so far. Hopefully this helps? Enjoy!

Don't forget that at this point Hinata doesn't really have the skill level to aim where he's hitting. He's still swinging the same way everytime so that Kageyama can aim the ball into his hand essentially. Sometimes it shows him with his eyes open, but I think that's always after he actually hits the ball. Also Shimada is the dude with glasses that was teaching Yamaguchi how to float serve on his own. The poet teacher actually on the team is called Takeda. The foreign names can be really tough, hope this helps. Love the reactions!

Feeling really bad lately but this really cheered me up, especially when I saw myself at the start lol. It's gonna be a really fun and wild ride from here on out, and we get to explore everyone, even the minor characters, a lot more, which is something I really appreciate about Haikyuu. It reminds us that it's not just the main characters that are trying their best.

"In life, there is no growth without pain." No truer words spoken Coach!! Also your comment just gave me a new perspective on how without Oikawa's constant losses to Shiratorizawa's Ushijima, we probably wouldn't see the Oikawa we see now - a player that maximises every teammate's potential, to beat their opponents with the best team of six. Also just saw your community post, hope that you get to balance life and work, tbh with the quality videos you make I don't mind if you decided to switch back to 1 video a week! Last thing I would want happening to any creator is burnout, and I believe quality videos comes with good rest too. Thank you as always for the great video!

17:13 ...notice that Kageyama snapped out of it after Hinata addressed him formally 'Kageyama-san'.😂 fun fact- Hinata is the oldest among the first years and Kageyama being the youngest. *FYI* "-chan" is usually used by friends who are close with each other. It is kinda like a nickname (like how Oikawa calls Iwaizumi as 'Iwa-chan'. Oikawa also has this habit of being friendly with everyone. So he tends to call people in a very friendly manner like for example, Kageyama as 'Tobio-chan, and Hinata as 'Chibi-chan' translated as 'shorty', which probably annoys them😅) "-kun" is used to address males, they can be same age, older or maybe younger (like how Takeda-sensei, their faculty teacher, addresses coach as Ukai-kun or how addresses the players as Hinata-kun, Kageyama-kun etc). "-san" is used to address females (like how the first years call the manager, Shimizu-san). Also to address seniors, elders etc (like how the first years call out to the third years as "Daichi-san", "Suga-san" or "Asahi-san" etc). I hope this is helpful. It may not be accurate cuz my source of knowledge is from all those animes I have watched. P.S (their faculty teacher's name is Takeda and not Shimada. Shimada is the one who taught Yamaguchi the float serve and also a former graduate of Karasuno along with Coach Ukai Keishin and the others from Karasuno Neighborhood Association. Takeda-sensei is a mordern literature teacher.)

I REALLY wanted to upvote, since your explanation about honorifics was more accurate than many of the others I found, but... I can't because of the last sentence... The one thing that I don't know about the KZbinrs who react to animes is, how they are able to contain their curiosity after seeing such a fantastic episode. How do you control yourself not to watch another episode immediately?
@TheJacqueswong3 жыл бұрын
That last part was very touching, it still always brings me to tears even after re-watching. I think Hinata at this point still can't control his spikes so this is also a great lesson for them to improve. It is a great time to also "fail" rather than breeze through his early years and then experience failure later on. This gives them the drive. As always, such a great reaction. I am so looking forward to you reacting to Season 2 and 3 and 4.

Mentioned this before but not sure if you caught it... but this will be important info for next episode regarding the third years: Japanese school year runs from April to March. I believe this particular event is running from June to August whereas the next tournament (spring high) will run from late August until January which coincides with college entrance exams which are also held in (mid)-January. Therefore, 3rd years are heavily discouraged (and in some schools outright prohibited) from participating in order to prepare for their exams (unless going for a sports scholarship I believe).

watching this episode always brings me to tears. I'm 24 now and back when I played rugby and football actively and in tournaments when I was in my teens, this episode always reminds me of those losses. training every day after school, on weekends, hours on hours of work, only to lose in the finals or semi-finals. that one time that we lost, our coach treated us to KFC. like Karasuno all of us were confused. "but we lost. this doesn't feel like a celebration" I remember sitting in silence and just eating. only one or two guys stepped out and cried. the rest of us were quiet. we didn't say anything to each other. felt similar to this. man.. those were the days

Eat, don't stay up late, don't overwork, stretch- All of these little things mean so much to me personally... The way Iwaizumi tells Oikawa not to stay up late, not to overwork when he was in the Kageyama-craze in middleschool, to stretch. The way Ukai ALWAYS tells these boys to eat a proper meal even before he was their coach And there will be more moments like this in the future. I love this so much bc so many wouldnt even put such little details into a story but this is so integral to Haikyuu... GOD I LOVE THIS SERIES
