When you talked about the parents that tell their kids to stop playing volleyball... I had to think of the scene at the end of season 1 where the teacher tells Suga to stop playing because he isnt even a starter, that there is no "merit" in continuing to play. And Suga just answers "I don't play volleyball for the merit."

This episode is really one of Haikyuu!!’s biggest charm points, raising the “whys” we can all relate too. Tsukki’s strategy is, in a way, relatively foolproof: aiming for #1, or even #1-5, is difficult, few ever get that high, and if you’re not too invested, it’s not going to hurt as badly. Most people don’t realize the skills, the ups, the experiences they’re missing out on with this attitude, but they simply don’t want to get hurt, and who can really blame them? It’s just one of the things that sets “common folks” and “monsters”, or those close to them, apart. I also really appreciate the fact that in was Yamaguchi’s intervention to make, not Hinata’s, even though the latter is the main character who’s shown his communication skills on multiple occasions. He gets to step aside (and with a solid argument at that - he can’t even tell if Tsukki likes volleyball, and you can’t make someone play against their own will) and encourage Yamaguchi to do something, because Yamaguchi actually knows which of Tsukki’s buttons to push. And the way it's all beautifully secured by Bokuto's speech, too. I also love this tiny detail where he mentions that "that's how it works for me, it doesn't mean that your way of thinking is wrong". I just love Haikyuu's writing so much~

"the things that set common folks and monsters apart" definitely agree w that. we can't blame either side cause they're both understandable. one that like to take risks, get hurt, but be the best or the one that doesn't want to lose or hurt themselves so they go lowkey. definitely both are valid, both are fine.

Akiteru (Tsukki's brother) is actually on the team - he's got the Karasuno Volleyball Club team jacket and (it's not mentioned in the show) but Karasuno during the Little Giant's time just had so many players on the team that if you weren't a regular or likely to be subbed in, they didn't have enough room for them to stand in the box off the side of the court. So he's on the team and practices with them, but he's not skilled enough to even be on the warm-up bench, essentially - which for Tsukki, who has known him as the ace the whole time, is still pretty shocking.

Me on Coach's prediction about Yamuguchi in the future be like: "Just so you wait, Coach!" Also, I would like to add as I don't know if you notice it, Coach. Another reason why Tsukki was not very motivated on playing volleyball was his inferiority complex to Hinata. As you see on the back story, his brother was like Tsukki - tall and has a good instinct (based on his junior high play) BUT was not chosen and instead the ace player of Karasuno at that time is the Little Giant - a small player with great athletic abilities just like Hinata. I really like this detail as it was established in season 1 that Tsukki thinks that he cannot beat Hinata just how Little Giant surpassed his big brother.

@Pantalaimon913 жыл бұрын
That's always been one of my favorite little inferences you can gleam from Tsukishima's backstory. He watched his brother work so hard and struggle so much, only to be stuck behind a short, athletic, kid who just reads the game instinctively, just like Hinata. The writing on all the characters is just so well done and there really isn't an uninteresting character in the entire story.

Something about the last scene where yachi said ‘sun vs tsuki(moon)?’ and we could see the moon in the sky. Sometimes the Moon shines so bright that you can even see them in daylight. I think it also means that tsuki no longer sees himself as someone who is there to hold the fort when Hinata is in the back row, he is starting to shine as a mid-blocker who can score points and carry the team forward. It is such a beautiful imagery.

Hey Coach! To answer your question at 13:00 ish the voice actors for younger Tsukki & Yamaguchi are different people from their current voice actors! So there is no pitch changing here. Unless the age gap isn't much, they usually use separate voice actors for the characters in their younger days ^^ For Tsukki's older brother, I feel like he and Tsukki had a really good sibling relationship. As you said, we often hear siblings bickering or picking on each other, but Tsukki's bro was his role model and was very supportive of him learning volleyball just like him! I think some siblings can get jealous when their younger sibling "copies" them, but Tsukki's bro was probably always proud to be an inspiration to him. He used to be the ace in middle school, so he knows the joys of being strong and playing at a high level, but when he went to Karasuno when there were a lot of other talented (maybe even a lot more so than him) players, the competition wasn't an opposing school, but fellow clubmates. You can see he's still not losing any spirit when he was a first year, saying that he needs to work even harder since he's aware he's now surrounded by even better players. He might've lied at first because he didn't see any harm if he made his words come true (Fake it til you make it), but even by his third year (last year of high school in Japan) he wasn't able to even make it to the team so I guess he just felt like as long as he could hide it from Tsukki, it would be better to keep the lie alive than to disappoint him (unfortunately, things didn't work out as planned). Tsukki says "how lame", but I think he also felt hurt for his brother. I wonder if instead of thinking his brother's passion for volleyball was the reason he lied, Tsukki might feel guilty that he indirectly put pressure on his own brother by always excitedly asking him about volleyball even without knowing his brother's struggles. His brother probably didn't want him to worry either so he just told him nice things to keep him happy. Tsukki acts too cool for school to protect himself, but I think he cares a lot deep down. He just needs to channel that "caring" more positively haha Though he is very vocal about his own opinions (which may be often negative), if he does feel that he's being challenged, it's good that he's actively asking the upperclassmen for their insight to pick their brain. He has his faults, but it's great to see him working on them and growing. 29:15 The "Just a club" in Japanese was pronounced Tada no bukatsu (tada = just, no is a particle, bukatsu = club). Bokuto is making a lame joke that it sounds like someone's name. I believe "Tadano" is actual Japanese name lol They started thinking about it like "Tada Nobukatsu" or "Tadanobu Katsu" as various potential names Keep up the good insight/commentary/analysis/volleyball tips coach! Really happy to watch all you Haikyuu!! reacts \(^^)/

I believe that 「たかが部活の事だったのに、それを兄の全てである様に思ってた。結果、兄に不要な嘘までつかせた。」translated to "It was only a club, but it was everything to my brother. In the end, it made my brother tell pointless lies." was a BIG mistranslation. It's more like "Though it was only a club, I thought of it as if it was the entirety of (what constituted) my brother. As a result, I made him tell pointless lies." . Japanese often emit pronouns because they're obvious by the sentence structure &/or content, but that often leads to unfortunate mistranslations.

Man that's really tragic to think that Tsukki blames himself about his brother ;-;
@teadrop_3 жыл бұрын
@@bdylp1098 Thanks for the insight! Translating/localizing is a difficult so there's always going to be some things lost in translation. I guess in the translation here, they omitted a bit of Tsukki's thoughts/feelings (the 思ってた), which indicates the subject is Tsukki. I know in English, it may seem redundant to include "I believe" since the speaker is already stating what they think so that's probably why there was a lack of clarification. Japanese is convenient where you don't have to repeat the pronoun/subject to still be understood, so I don't think it was a huge translation, just a bit difficult to convey the nuance when localizing. The "it" (in this translation) that makes him tell pointless lies could be both how Tsukki acted when he was younger to make his brother's coolness revolve only around volleyball and his own brother's passion for volleyball. The former's a bit more difficult to discern with the current translation, but I think if there are people who think about the intentions behind the characters thoughts like Coach, it shouldn't be too bad to see it too. It's nice to have fun discussions on the intent/meaning behind some phrases though, even with a direct translation, there's always something else to consider! ^^

@@jnhw6064 Tsukki can be a brat sometimes, but he's a good bean lol People process their traumas differently, but just like Yamaguchi said previously, Tsukki doesn't hate volleyball (and therefore he most definitely doesn't hate his brother, prob just feels bad for him more than anything) otherwise he wouldn't have gone to Karasuno or even joined the volleyball team where his brother was. That might also add to why, even though he has a lot more fundamental knowledge on volleyball than Hinata, he still feels inferior because he doesn't think he deserves to be on the starting team since I think one of the main reason he's there is b/c of his height + skill that everyone else should already have and Karasuno's vball team has a lot less members compared to his brother's time, making it "easier" to be a starting member. There are other upperclassmen on the team before Tsukki & other 1st years came, and usually it would be seniority-based, but Ukai chose the starting members based on skill. Enoshita & fellow 2nd yrs mentioned before that they also had a "It's only a club, so we don't know why we gotta train so hard" , left the club for a bit & eventually came back, so even if they've been around the club longer, Tsukki might still be more skilled since he's been learning from his brother since elementary. The next exception would be Suga, but his position is setter (taken by Kageyama) and he's shorter than Tsukki so Tsukki would still be the go to member to put in the start up team even if his motivation/drive is lower than the rest. I wonder how he felt, getting to be on the starting team of Karasuno vball club while his brother never got the chance. Kinda hurts to think about sometimes lol But knowing their relationship, it'll be fine ^^

@wildpokemon23 жыл бұрын
Coach I think what you said about how Tsukki just asking a question is in a way an admittance that he cares, is spot on! This is all personal interpretation - but I think he has trouble even admitting to himself that he cares about volleyball because of what happened with his brother - it was caring so much about the club that caused his brother to lie, and Tsukki doesn't want that to happen to himself. When Tsukki goes to ask the other team's players for advice, he starts very reluctantly: "I have a question, may I ask it?" because even though part of him wants to change, he's also very scared of that change and is treading lightly - it's almost like he's asking himself "Is it okay if I ask questions? Is it okay if I try?"
@sunggyulee90203 жыл бұрын
Exactly, which is why they included that scene where Daichi and Suga are talking about him. Daichi hints that he believed Tsukishima had that motivation. The reality is that Tsukishima is scared, he doesn't want what happened to his brother to happen to him, to care so much about something only to lose it all. So, he hides in this "I don't care" facade. It is no coincidence that he has a little giant, just like his brother had one.

Just a clarification coach, Tsukki's older brother WAS on the Karasuno team, he was a great player in middle school (the Ace) and did put in the time and effort when he was in Karasuno, but he wasn't a starter and wasn't a first reserve. That's why he was in the stands. He lied to Tsukki because Tsukki looked up to him so much and he didn't want to let him down, he had hoped that one day he would get moved into a starter position. What made Tsukki's mentality of "it's just a club, why put so much effort into it?" is because his brother put so much time and effort into his Volley club only to be put in the stands. His brother was his idol and to see his idol put in so much work and get so little result made Tsukki very reserved so he wouldn't ever feel how his brother did.
@jbsuselessopinion8433 жыл бұрын
TWO SIDES' 1. TSUKI'S POINT OF VIEW I just want to point out why Tsuki is how he is now was not just because he was betrayed by his brother but because he saw how hard his brother worked, YET he didn't achieve anything in highschool bec. there are so much more better people than him. He loves volleyball so much that he lied to his younger brother, who looks up to him. It explains Tsuki's ideology of why he hated Hinata at first in Season 1 because of his "needless passion" as Tsukishima describe, just like his brother. As he explained in this episode, THERE WILL ALWAYS BE SOMEONE BETTER, so why try, showing how traumatized he was and he how actually kinda emphatized with his brother. 2. HIS BROTHER'S SIDE Also for those who didn't understand Tsuki's brother. I'm talking about his reasons. He was the ace on his middle school. He clearly felt like he would be looked at like a disappointment if he wasn't the ace like everyone believed he would be. He tried to prevent Tsuki from ever knowing and it backfired on him even more. Ot was a bad decision, but it's understandable when it's something he's put so much effort towards his little brother watching the whole way. Also he was still in the team. You could say a benchwarmer. But we need to recall that Karasuno at that time was as it's height and had many highly skilled players that they had more than the allowed amount of people on the bench. So some of the benchwarmers had to stay in the stands. I would imagine Tsuki's brother is as powerful as Asahi& Future Tanaka but it's jut that there are more players better than him. The tragedy of Tsuki's brother is he is skilled volleyball player and he worked really hard but because there are so many "elite" players at that time he never got to play.

I think I was engrossed in Tsuki's backstory because we all know someone like him that we either played or worked with, but dont have the priviledge of seeing what made them harden they way they did. I really hope Coach sees this, because it's actually one of my favorite moments of the episode and I think he misinterpreted it. At the end of the episode, Tsukishima was actually glaring at Hinata, as if to tell him to watch his back because he's no longer going to be content staying the background and letting Hinata take all all the glory. Yamaguchi noticed this and that's why he smiles, knowing that Tsukki finally has some motivation to do and be better and Yamaguchi helped him get there. Yachi also noticed which prompted her to comment on the sun vs moon metaphor again. Cut to the moon being out during the day, representing Tsukki beginning to truly become a rival for Hinata, ready and able to take his spot in the spotlight, instead of just being there when Hinata can't.

When Coach said last episode that, not only did he think that Hinata would be the one to talk to Tsuki, but also that Yams couldn't be the one to talk to Tsuki, I was just like 'Oh how wrong you are'. I loved how he could tell that Akiteru was lying though, he was like 'maybe I'm reading too much into it', and I was like no, don't worry, you're spot on.

Yeah I hinted at it last episode but I think Coach really underestimates Yamaguchi and his friendship with Tsukki. Always referring to him as a lacky. Tsukki may be the most dominant personality and the one that talks the most but that's only because Yamaguchi is timid. Yamaguchi may look up to Tsukki but I do believe they have a real friendship.

"Nobody cares as much as you think they do" is one of the biggest and most important life lessons, or, at least that was the case with me growing up. The "everyone's eyes are on me I have to act perfect" mindset is enhanced when you're a teen at school. Your body and mind is going through lots of changes and having lots of people around you makes it suffocating. It's important to know that one: no one truly cares, and if they do, they're even more insecure than you. Two: everyone, even the most unexpected people like the student everyone likes, have their own insecurities. You, your friends, and everyone else around you is going through a lot, so you should be mindful and be friendly and not pay attention to those trying to drag you down.

Most of the time, people give their opinion in a negative way just for fun, to be mean, but I realized that there are a few that only do that cause they lack empathy and they don't have any bad intentions. Once a woman told me "you are fat", it wasn't a thing to make a question or tell me something more, was just that, at the moment I thought "And you are ugly, while I can lose weight you can't become pretty in a simple way", BUT I decided not to do that, cuz it doesn't matter, it was a person that I hardly gonna see again and I don't need that kind of energy in my life. In fact, my whole life people look at me and demonstrate that they don't like the way a look, my clothes, my hair and even my music, but I really don't care, the way I am it only concern me. The only think that matters is the way that you think about yourself.

This is one of my favorite episodes, and I'm glad Coach is starting to appreciate Tsukki a little more now. As for Tsukki's brother (Akiteru), I think he worked really hard during his time at Karasuno. However, it was a power house school with a lot of amazing players; no matter how hard he practiced and dedicated himself to volleyball, Akiteru never played a game. He knew little Tsukki looked up to him, so he made up the facade that ended up hurting both of them at the end.

With Akiteru (Tsukishima’s older brother) he did go to practice every day, and he was part of the club But the club had so many people that when they were playing matches, they had their starters on the court, with the bench warmers at the side, and everyone else cheering in the stands You can see Akiteru wearing the club jersey in the stands, and he probably gives his all to practice but he never made the team. This is probably why Tsukkishima has/had an inferiority complex to Hinata Because his older brother wasn’t on par with the little giant so he couldn’t be on par with Hinata

Akiteru, Tsukki's brother, wasn't a part of Karasuno's fanclub but an actual player for Karasuno, During his time Karasuno was at it's peak and many talented players wanted to play for the school making it a very competitive place, unfortunately there's only a limited spot on the roster that can play on the tournament and he didn't make it so he, and the other club members who also didn't make the roster, were on the stands cheering for their teammates who are playing. that's why Tsukki was really heartbroken because his brother gave his everything to volleyball in hopes of making it to the regular roster or becoming the ace but in the end it didn't work out for him. He was also Tsukki's inspiration (in a previous episode Yamaguchi said that if Tsukki hated volleyball he wouldn't be in Karasuno) and as a Good Big Brother he didn't wanna let Tsukki down even if it meant lying to him and as Tsukki have mentioned in his monologue maybe even Akiteru himself believed that maybe his lie, being the Ace of Karasuno, may come true if he worked hard enough.
@Scilk_6073 жыл бұрын
I feel like the feeling tsukki felt with his bro is like when someone you rely on dips out. Like they were both super passionate about volleyball and karasuno. At glance tsukkis reaction might have seemed overly dramatic and it might seem weird that just the fact that his brother lied about being on the team caused tsukki to completely change his personality like that, but you have to really put yourself in his shoes. A large majority of his passion came from his brother, and when his brother betrayed him, it’s only natural he’d be salty towards volleyball and people who are passionate about it seem dumb to him, because when HE was passionate about it, it ended up biting him in the rear.
@exoticcats61193 жыл бұрын
Sometimes I get into a video game because of a friend, but without that friend the video game just isn’t as fun and I don’t enjoy it as much. In Tsukkis case it holds more meaning because he betrayed his trust and enthusiasm to learn about his brothers hobby (and maybe even more than a hobby). I’ve also tried copying what my older sibling has done. He probably looked up to his brother only to find out that he wasn’t how he imagined. (All of this is in my opinion of course).
@aichilovewisdom3 жыл бұрын
True, I personally have been through a similar situation but with a different reason. The disappointment and betrayal you'll feel after realizing that the person you look up to is different from what they painted themselves on your mind can really make you develop trust issues and would demotivate you heavily.
@Scilk_6073 жыл бұрын
@@exoticcats6119 exactly, not only does he now realize he’s all alone in wanting to play volleyball, but he was lied to and practically punished for looking up to his brother playing volleyball, which definitely explains his distaste for the sport while holding a very tiny sense of latent passion within.

@@aichilovewisdom also the fact that tsukki is the only one who’s passionate about playing volleyball. Think of it as you and a close friend going on a trip to Hawaii or something but once you get to the airport your friend decides not to go last minute, now you’re going on vacation by yourself. All of a sudden, Hawaii doesn’t seem fun anymore at all, which wouldn’t necessarily be the case if you were planning on going alone from the start but the fact that the friend lied to you and wasn’t as dedicated as you really leaves a bad taste in your mouth

YESS the episode we have all been waiting for! About the just a club joke, the best translation I've seen is from the English manga translation: "Just a club? sounds like a person's name." "You mean like Justin Klubb?" In Japanese, Bokuto misheard "just a club" 'takaga bukatsu' as 'Tada Nobukatsu', which is a Japanese name. Also, Tsukki's first name is Kei 蛍 - which means Firefly. Akiteru is his brother's first name. This episode is still one of my favourites, given how rare it is for people to actually question the things Tsukki says here out loud in a story. In TV or movies we always gets these passionate, fired up main characters with their ambitions and big aspirational goals, but Haikyuu really managed to even get the layman audience, a parent or a non-athlete insights as to why one pours so much time and effort into their passion.

I love the symbolism in this episode where as Tsuki leaves the feee practice you can see the clouds go over the moon then he's view gets clouded as he is confused by everyone working so hard while thinking about his brother lying about being the ace when he was in high school, but then Yamaguchi tells Tsuki off about being lame and at that moment the clouds uncover the moon as Tsuki gains some clarity.

tsukki’s my favorite character out of the entire show, there’s just something about his “accidental” devotion that draws me in. he tries his hardest to distance himself, but he finds himself caring and putting in effort once in a while, and in a way those failed attempts make him one of the most genuinely passionate players. hes complex and interesting, which is refreshing in a weird way in the mix of all these outwardly passionate characters (kageyama, hinata, noya, even yamaguchi)

i honestly love Tsukki so much because i think he is one of the few characters (if not the only character) that i can relate to. As much as I love Hinata, Kageyama and the other Karasuno boys, i can’t see myself in them; they have such a high passion for volleyball and their determination to become better is just kinda unrealistic to me (not saying that it’s impossible to feel like that, i just have never felt that passionate about anything lmao). I feel like in a way im like Tsukki, to afraid to even try harder because im honestly afraid of failure and the pain that comes with it. Tsukki is a really logical and analytical character, he constantly asks himself and others “why even try that hard? what do you gain from this?” because he can’t comprehend the concept of doing something and “wasting your time” on something just for the experience and happiness it gives you. Tsukki sees the bigger picture, he is realistic, he is not living in the moment; he thinks “whats the point of doing all this if our chances of actually going to nationals and beating all the powerhouses are so minimal?”. Its a cruel way of thinking because at the end of day, you and your mentality ends up being your biggest enemy. Watching Haikyuu i realized that im pretty much like that, and it helped me to realize that mentality does more harm than good; because it’s prevents you from actually experience things, it stops you from improving yourself and your skills; and most importantly it helped me to realize that you end up being your worst enemy. Because as Tsukki, you may have everything in your favor to become better (in Tsukki’s case, he has the brains, the height and the athletic abilities), but the only thing that’s stopping you to actually improve is none other that yourself. While watching Haikyuu i honestly wasnt expecting that it would have such a big impact on me, or that i would have such a revelation of myself. But it honestly helped me to understand myself better, and how to improve myself everyday. Later i found out that me and Tsukki, are both INTJs, so I guess that explains why I felt such a big connection with him lmaooo

What I love about Hinata's attitude towards other people, especially the players in and outside of his team, is that he doesn't think lowly of them at all. Whether they're the best player or not, he doesn't really focus on their negative aspects. Like when Yamaguchi asked Hinata about his thoughts on Tsukishima, and while commenting on subject of Tsukishima's not giving it his all, he just started going off on all of Tsukishima's qualities that he thinks are awesome. Yeah, he did comment on it by saying that it's a waste, but still raves about Tsukishima and still shows that he respects him as a player. Hinata doesn't think of him as weak (often saying "I'm gonna beat him!"). He doesn't bad mouth other people and always has something nice to say about them, not because he's sucking up to them, but because he's a genuine person that really loves the sport. I find it inspiring and make me think about my own attitude towards how I should think about other people.

I always found this episode super interesting. The trauma from his brother evolved in the further negativity overtime. There is a feeling when it comes to sports, esports, or anything competitive for that matter. The feeling that only the sky is the limit and that by working hard you only get better. I will never be a NBA and I have always known I wasn't cut for it. Heck, I would even say I am just an average player. However, in highschool, I got a little taste of what it feels like to play on a team, play official matches, with referees, coaches, time outs, electronic boards, rival teams, rival players, everything. A taste I never got to taste again after highschool and yet everyday I long for that taste. I still do basketball drills, even though I only get to play with my friends once or twice a month, all for the sake to have a little taste of that feeling again. I totally understand why people go and play in amateur leagues, pour their soul into the game. It's because we are addicted to that taste, to that "moment" Bokuto is talking about.

I love how coach react calmly and and also give us a lot of information. I hope that you continue this reaction of Haikyuu until the end. Hello from Malaysia ❤️

Coach Donny the reason why everyone was so shocked by tsukki at the end was that was him jumping at 100% and no one had ever seen that before. It was "terrifying"

One of my favorite episodes, and definitely one that made me really relate to Tsukki as someone who's competed in teams and who's also sometimes too introverted and calculated. Loving the Haikyuu, but as usual, staying for the coach Donny wisdom! Definitely some quotable gems for sure this episode coach, keep it up!
