It's funny how differently people approach storytelling. For totally understandable reasons, both of you look at Bokuto from the perspective of a fellow player or a coach, in which case you would naturally focus on the negatives that come with him. As a writer, I love him because he's a fantastic character. Visually memorable, charismatic, entertaining, and his emo mode is not only hilarious, but a great opportunity to showcase a different kind of team. That's one of the things I love about Haikyuu, is that it doesn't just have great characterization of the people, but also of the TEAMS. Group-as-character is one technique for making the characters more memorable when you have so many. Bokuto's team is defined by their relationship to Bokuto, whereas Nekoma's team is defined by their relationships to each other. It's a much more balanced dynamic. One great thing about manga and anime is that the writing is so excellently structured, there's always something to learn from it. Haikyuu has got outstanding characters and writing.

I often think about all the little devices that Furudate-sensei used and I'm just blown away. When you think of it, it's just a simple story about teenage boys playing volleyball, and yet it so effortlessly deep. I'm wowed by something new every time I reread or rewatch it. And when you know it all, you get even more impressed by how well-structured it is, and how much meaning it contains.

This. All of this. I find it so interesting that my favorite characters (Bokuto, Oikawa, Tendo, Atsumu) are some of the most polarizing in the fandom. I think the reasons to like bokuto right now in the show are that he’s really fun on screen, he is super skilled, and his emotional flaws are portrayed in a comedic way stead of taking it too seriously. I think the author did this on purpose because people like that can be super toxic in real life. He does a good job of still showing a very real and common character flaw and making it light hearted and funny so you don’t just hate the character. Bokuto is without a doubt a great character.

Sure he still has flaws to work on but the potential for greatness is there. Also he's funny and cares for his comrades and doesn't hesitate to teach what he knows to the next generation. He is so passionate about volleyball and he wears his heart on his sleeve. When he's up he's up and when he's down he's down. But i love that he has supreme confidence in himself and has the talent and skills to follow it up. He reminds me a lot of Rafael Nadal in tennis. He was really good when he was younger, but he would often get in a slump and throw temper tantrums when he wasn't playing well. But people still loved him regardless because when he was playing at his best, he was unstoppable. Eventually he matured and learned to control his emotions on the court more and became the best in the world for a couple of years. Bokuto is still just a teenager. He has a lot to work on both in his game and mentality but i think he'll get there gradually as he grows older and matures.

Realistically, no one is perfect at that age. As long as a character is entertaining or just a decent human being, I wouldn't even care if they are presented as annoying or the bad guy. But I've also finished the manga, and that could be the case as to why I still like his character...

The thing that won me over for Bokuto was right before the "moment" speech, he calls Tsukishima "Glasses-kun" or something to that effect like the others do, but when Tsukki goes "my name's Tsukishima", he immediately switches to "Tsukishima-kun". I've been in plenty of situations where someone calls me by a weird nickname (can't fault them too much, my real name's odd for english speakers) and I tell them my actual name and how to say it, they just double down with the weird nickname or call me something worse for correcting them. Bokuto has an ego, sure. But it's far from toxic. He's self aware, can laugh at himself, owns up to goofs, and is all around a great dude. Still at season 4 in the manga so looking forward to what's ahead for our boy.

Think of it this way Bokuto is so good that they needed to nerf him somewhere and the easiest most relatable way is mentally/emotionally. Bokuto is also used for a little comedic relief, nobody likes a perfect overpowered player.

Most of the Fukurodani content is still not animated (and there's a possibility that it will never get animated), so it is quite hard to say anything without spoiling a bit! 😂 When I first watched Bokuto, it was clear that he was brought in the series as 'comedy relief character', it is a success as most of the viewers found him funny and interesting with his "emo mode" at the same time. But as the series goes on in the manga, he had become one of the most significant characters outside of Karasuno and is representing one of the biggest themes that Furudate-sensei is portraying throughout Haikyuu (which I cannot spoil). For now, his energy is contagious, confident, open-minded, very passionate about the sport and that he keeps his heart on his sleeve. He is self-aware of his own flaws as a person and as a player, which we will see more as the series progresses. You'll see Fukurodani's whole team dynamic next episode and I'm looking forward to what you guys will react about it!

For me, Bokuto is one of those "characters" you see in sitcoms like Kramer from Seinfeld, Sheldon from Big Bang Theory, Barney from HIMYM, Dwight from The Office or even Homer Simpson: They're amusing and funny to watch, at times even likeable, but they are people I would never have the patience and disposition to associate directly with IRL. That said, I can still enjoy them as fictional characters in a show. Basically, it's funny when it doesn't happen to you. In Bokuto's case, outside of his mood swings, he's a nice and genuine guy, and his "moments" speech to Tsukki is personally one of my favourite bits in the series. That's enough for me to look past his negative qualities (that I dont have to deal with directly, haha). I think everyone has someone like that, though: "Yeah, Such-and-such is a bit ___, but we love them anyway."
@SpaceJunglerY7 ай бұрын
I feel like Bokuto would seem more likable if Haikyuu followed him and his team through their actual season, much like Karasuno. Minor spoilers, but one thing Akaashi mentions about Bokuto is that when the entire team is feeling down in situations that feel hopeless, he is the one who is still motivated and able to keep the team's spirits up. His teammates obviously don't like having to deal with his bad mentality, but as his friends they are willing to support him just as he does for them when they are feeling bad. If you think about his bad mental purely as a teammate trying to win (rather than his friend) it's much more annoying, but if you think like that I feel it's unfair to expect him to be always perfect when he is already their ace and a vital component to why they can win so many games in the first place. He is also very clearing blaming himself for messing up and doesn't try to deflect it by blaming his teammates or something out of his control. Keep in mind Bokuto is also teenager at this point, and I would say for someone of his talent at this age he feels less "cocky" and instead just confident, which makes watching him play and his skill much more likable. He doesn't embellish his ability (like when he told Hinata that his rebounds often fail), but still feels truly strong. His bad mental state isn't malicious either, it's just a flaw of a character who is otherwise a relatively good person. He clearly has a genuine love for the sport and is willing to share it openly with others. He is childish in mentality, but that is also why he has such a pure and honest enthusiasm for the game. Overall, Bokuto's open/honest personality and cool plays makes it, just as the show says, very easy to root for him.

As someone that has Bokuto just outside my top 5 for the whole cast, I don't disagree with what you guys are saying. I think his outbursts are played for laughs within the context of the show and from that perspective can be a little endearing, while at the same time is pretty blatantly shown to be a flaw of the character in a more realistic sense. I think the positives of his character far outweigh that negative aspect though In particular the way he wholeheartedly lifts up those around him so naturally, like he does with Hinata and Tsukki. He doesn't care whether the person is his teammate or a future rival, he just wants others to love volleyball the way that he does and is always happy to share his experience. He's also one of the many characters in this show who represent the pure absolute love of the sport. Adam touched on it in this episode, how he's driven by how good volleyball feels to play. He's just a guy who genuinely and so passionately loves to play, almost like it's built into his DNA, similar to Hinata and Kageyama. I would agree with some others though who've said that people who really love Bokuto are probably manga readers, so I won't go in to too much more to avoid spoilers. But he's definitely a very polarizing character and I can't fault you guys for having some distaste for him, especially from a more volleyball focused perspective.

I mean almost all main and important charas in HQ have obvious flaws. And for most manga readers, we already saw their progress and what they have become. Bokuto is childish and unpredictable, but he also have very positive energy when he is in good mood and always love sharing his knowledge to other ppl, I admire that. Kageyama's issues will be addressed much later and you need to finish the manga to understand why he was like that. The difference is that I tend to hide and suppress my feelings because I am afraid of other people’s judgements, and I don’t trust that people can accept my “defected self.” This actually leads to something much worse, ex. depression. Top three being a "WeakMinded " player is not possible for sure Now his flaws are bad. Nobody wants a moody person on the team. Energy kill things end the game before any set. However, considering Bokuto is like 18-19 i think that flaw is a vaild response for that age group. When he loved volleyball is when he made a straight against a 3-block. And You'll never hear fukurodani say Bokuto was the reason we lost Often it is the reason they won So, Mental fortitude is a skill he has to learn, but talent personality and skillwise I have no qualms about P.S I never understood why Sarah hates the "HeyHeyHey" Me and my friends do that on every kill Its a fun thing to say haha

Many songwriter friends also fit this description. Since I have known a great many people for whom their emotional life is a rollercoaster, I am perhaps a bit inured to it. He’s generous to Hinata who he probably sees the dedication and passion in (but also was feeding his ego) that he takes hinata under his wing. He performs well when the team doesn’t but knows when he himself is not in the right state of mind and will trust his teammates to carry him as he adjusts. He’s not perfect, yes the emotional and mental weakness is at play. But by the end of the manga, after a very important match for him and his team, I was just in awe of him.

The manga depicts Bokuto's past and changes, but it takes a while to watch. Evaluating Bokuto without spoilers, I feel like he is a player who embodies what Shimada said after the loss to Aoba Josai "You have to be strong to enjoy competition.'' He doesn't care about his reputation as the national ace, and always practices voraciously and enjoys the competition. However, I can understand your frustration too😅

Gotta fully agree with Adam on the “coach is paying” moments. There used to be this place, where they served street food, and coach would have us win in 3 straight sets, he will buy us all salchipapas (street food commonly found in Latinamerica, that consists on French fries, and wieners with ketchup and homemade Mayonnaise 🤤🤤🤤)

I hope Adam starts using "Hey hey hey" in his team or when he is coaching! I love how in this relationship Adam is Bokuto and Sarah is Kuro. So we get this: 4:24 and 6:21

I completely understand yours and people's initial reaction to Bokuto being negative or exasperated especially if they played volleyball. Bokuto is one of my favorite characters and very likeable as you get to know him but to real life athletes, someone with Bokuto's personality is actually so mentally exhausting to play with. Especially when they're a center stage kind of person too. Thankfully like the other commentors have said Bokuto is more than his first appearances

I don't think we can discuss Bokuto yet. He definitely shows some flaws and mental struggles, though as of now I reaaaally love his personality. He's generally so cheerfull in and out the court that it makes me like him a lot, even though I'm quite antisocial haha. Also, his love for volley seems quite huge, and the joy he feels both with his own good plays and others good plays is so damn contagius

First and foremost love your guys reactions from a pure volleyball perspective, giving in depth analysis from past and present life experiences. This is the main reason I follow your journey to see the thought process of how a WORLD CHAMPION and COACH operate. Theirs a lot of great comments explaining why Bokuto's a great character and what not but I think by the end of it all Bokuto will be in both of your guys top 5.

Sarah`s happyyyyyy faces when the guys achieve their plays is like, yeeeeah! Prouuuud loving fan!! About Adam questions about Bokuto. I remember what he says just minutes before: Bukuto is very feeling oriented: "kill that way of this way is the best feeling" and, I think is understandable that, when he wants that feeling and is not getting it, he feels equally strong the other type of feelings, frustration, embarrasment, etc... And he is deciding "don`t setting me more" because he wants to evade this negative feelings. So, what his setter does is very good: Bukuto needs a time out to calm down this negative fealings and come back, like a person who has anger issues or anxiety essues. I think is not mentally "weak", I think he is more emotionally responsive that the norm, and this is something that he have to fight all his live. For that, Bukuto making to the three best aces is MOOOOORE impresive, because he has another thing to fight that more people don`t have. And for the record, I`m not a Bukuto fan, I`m a therapist traying to analyze a character, because to me that is very fun :)

I like Bokuto mainly for 3 reasons. 1st- His personality, the way he usually behaves is just fun and refreshing, he makes those around him feel good and inspired. 2nd- He's fucking good at what he does, when he is not in his "emo mode" he is actually a great spiker, you can just send him the ball and for the most part he will get that point. 3rd- His willingness to help, teach or motivate someone, he's not afraid of making his opponents stronger which shows confidence. He does have issues, i haven't read the manga yet so i don't know what'll happen but I get the feeling that at an important time he will not let his team down, especially after all those times they lifted him up.

I loooove Bokuto. He's easily one of my top favorite characters. I don't know, it seems like he's good enough to balance his "emo moments" and being such a star player. His teammates don't hate him, which you can easily see happen if he was too much to handle like Sarah was saying. It just shows he has flaws like everyone else, he'll most likely grow out of it in the future but Bokuto still leads his team (who are all very good as well) to victory often. Again, Bokuto is one of my favorite Haiku characters. He is one of the reasons why Season 2 is still my favorite season in the whole series.

@Classified17 ай бұрын
The reason is they wouldn't even be your favourite character without the flaws. They become our favourite character flaws and all included . For example Hinata might not have been some peoples favourite if he was the best to begin with it was the fact that he had talent and multiple places to improve on that made people like him as an underdog.
@TheProgressiveFrequency6 ай бұрын
Personally, I like Bokuto's character development throughout the series. I like the ideology he lives by for volleyball and the way it reflects on how he plays and views other people. I also think that his outgoing hype man energy is cool and fun, and I'm honestly more amused at his 'emo modes' than anything else. It makes him more relatable, and helps to serve his character development later down the line, too. His sheer passion for the game is unrivaled by anyone except Hinata (and by extension Kageyama, even though Kageyama expresses this passion more inwardly as opposed to externally), and there's absolutely something infectious about that. I just can't dislike a guy who wears his heart on his slave so unafraid.
@IntriguingPandaChick7 ай бұрын
hi bokuto fan for over 8 years here HAHAH but I will say that the reason I like him applies to fans of any character outside of Hinata/Kageyama. Haikyuu is designed and written to show the strengths and flaws of a plethora of supporting characters. The author purposely humanises the main character's enemies, which is why HQ doesn't read as a main team vs the world type story and instead ultimately conveys the way all these characters with different personalities and goals come to interact with each other through the love of volleyball. In a way, Hinata has arguably more mental blocks than Bokuto, directly challenging Ushiwaka when he was still basically just Kageyama's weapon at that point, bumping into Asahi because he lost his awareness on court, yelling at Kageyama in the middle of a game for trying to accommodate him, etcetcetc, but as the main character, we try to empathise with him and support his growth regardless. It is the same for Bokuto for me - he's positive, friendly, hilarious, and he actually has the drive and skills to back up his talk - how will he grow? How will his team grow? They also obviously draw a lot of similarities between Bokuto and Hinata's personalities, which Sarah pointed out, but Bokuto is the protagonist (hehe) of his own story and i love my owl boy Also, love Sarah and Adam's perspectives as they try to empathise with Fukuroudani's team members having to baby Bokuto. At this time, good questions to ask are - why do they even put up with him? Why keep him on the court if you're not going to play him?

Bokuto has always been one of my favourites. I think many times we can drop reasonability or maturity and just genuinely enjoy what we do. He said it many times how he came this far with volleyball because he enjoyed it. And though it has been shown in a funny way but his teammates didn’t seem to be upset about this which means the unshown parts of him must be good enough to offset this.

Bokuto is like one of my favorite character because I can relate to him. I always blame myself if things don't go well but I tried harder and harder for it but it just didn't go well sometimes and I begin to blame myself like it's my fault. The only thing I don't have what bokuto has is he has his own recovery emotional state😊.

Fukurodani is low-key one of my favorite teams in the entire show. They just sneakily grow on you. And I love their slogan, which won't be shown for a long time yet, so I won't spoil it. Can't wait for the next episode and the exploration of their team dynamics. As for Bokuto. he wouldn't be so liked if he didn't have any flaws. And every character has some room to grow in Haikyuu.
@Aisha-fd1oq7 ай бұрын
I think Bokuto’s issues here are in a way the flipside of what Adam identified earlier in the episode: that he’s really powerfully motivated by the positive feelings he gets from doing things well-and really easily thrown off when something goes poorly. It’s definitely a huge flaw he needs to work on, but like most characters in the series (and most teenagers!), he’s a work in progress. He’ll get there eventually. What I like is how Fukurodani have evolved so that Bokuto’s slumps don’t drag them down. You can see it here from how everyone’s a bit annoyed (no one has time to emotionally manage Bokuto in the middle of a match), but no one’s treating it like a crisis. Akaashi’s great in this game; we get to see how quick his thinking is, he continues to wrangle Bokuto efficiently, Ukai praises him for how steady he is, and he’s immediately able to see what was different about the new quick attack and praise Kageyama for being able to make that set.

I love Bokuto 😂 I always found him funny from the first watch but as I saw more of him (also the manga), I just enjoy his energy, personality, and mind. But I understand what yall are saying. To Adams question at the end, yes sometimes you like a character from the jump and with rose colored glasses disregard some of their flaws. But for me, at this point I was kinda in line with Adam where Bokuto was “interesting”. Later in the series he really grew on me and became one of my favorites.

I feel like what Bokuto suffers from is tilt. I don't know if tilt is in your vernacular, but it's essentially that you start getting mad, which causes you to play worse, which causes you to get more angry, which continues to accelerate. I know that I personally get frustrated not when a player is better than me, but rather when I can feel myself making a mistake I know that I shouldn't be making. It makes me angry at myself. That in turn, makes me make more mistakes. It's certainly not a *good* behavior, but it is a realistic flaw. I like watching Bokuto, but I think he would drive me crazy to play with haha.

Great reaction as always! Sarah was so cute when she saw the success of the new quick attack!! Bokuto, he is actually childish at the moment, but I strongly hope his development would be properly shown in anime someday although it is almost hopeless at current situation🥲 Akaashi is one of my favorite players. He was already mature at the second year. I wish that Adam & Sarah would see adult Bokuto & Akaashi someday as they are so attractive.

Honestly, I’ve dealt with Many Bokutos through my volleyball career. Athletic freaks, but as dumb as rocks. I have two Bokutos rn on my team, and these guys can shatter blocks, and hit lines, and nasty crosses. But they are SOOOOOOO energetic and dumb, at the end of the day, we need them to win. So it’s easy to force them to play a certain way (it makes me sound like kageyama, but forcing them to play well as a way to deal with them), when they are at 100%, the whole team upgrades, it goes to the point where everyone can surpass their limits, as we play. Energy is contagious, to both teammates and rivals, it’s really fun to play against them.

the reason i love bokuto, like what many have already shared is because he is fun to watch (as a non-athlete 🙈) he's a breath of a fresh air to what the other characters are - straightforward and serious, and so he gives a little dynamic to the show it's not that i don't appreciate a straightforward and serious character, because another favorite character of mine is definitely one, a certain Inarizaki player 😍 and it's not that we or perhaps just I (😅), cannot accept that a character could be flawed or whatnot, because personally, it's exactly because they are flawed which is why i enjoy watching them even more or they resonate with me more - Oikawa and Bokuto are definitely flawed characters, and I love them because of it
