Power Rangers was a licensed adaptation of Super Sentai which originated in the 1970s, before Voltron and GoLion

From what I've heard Shiro was the original pilot of the black lion in the original but he died and Kieth took over but in the US version they didnt want to show a character dying so they cut it. I think because he died in the original they always planed to replace him with kieth but they wanted to have their own take on that storyline.
