This will work for any regular or irregular area on top and any regular or irregular area on bottom as long as the two planes are parallel and the height is known. You could obtain the top and bottom area however - possibly using a planimeter. This is useful for estimating civil volumes.

@JanetAbao you still use the same formula but it means they've simplified it for you there will be no need for you to find the area for the top base in this case only the area for the bottom base will be the one which needs to be calculated then substitute on the formula A1 and A2 that's all

@LadyAnn thank you for asking, it's not possible for you to find the volume if one of the heights is not given so its either you're given that height for the remaining shape after cutting or they can give you the height of the part that was cut those are the only possible ways. i hope I've answered your question
