In case anyone is interested in solving with the washer method: - Choose to integrate with respect to y. - Find the functions in terms of y. For y=sqrt(x), this becomes x=y^2. - The area of the cross-section is given by the difference between the inner circle and outer (which is x=6-y^2). This becomes A(y)=pi*(6-y^2)^2-pi*(6-4)^2=pi*(y^4-12y^2+36-4)=pi*(y^4-12y^2+32). - The lower bound a is given by the x-axis or y=0. That is, a=0. The upper bound is given by the value of y at the right-most limit of the region. Thus, y=sqrt(4)=2 is the upper bound b=2. - Integrating gives pi*int_0^2[y^4-12y^2+32] dy. Solving gives 192*pi/5, the same result obtained in this video.

why she did 6-x instead of 6-(sqrt x) for radius
@drewpass5697
@drewpass5697 5 жыл бұрын
because sqrt(x) represents just the height of the "region" (or the top part of the region that looks like half a parabola). The 'x' is just any arbitrary x value which I like to think of it as the "width portion" of the region (it's arbitrary because depending on where we draw the slice, or rectangle, x can be any value that is between 0 and 4 on the x-axis). I know I'm not using the correct terminology here but I think of it this way. The radius is sort of like the width portion and the equation of the curve y=sqrt(x) is sort of like the height portion. Since the axis of rotation is at a fixed x value (the value x = 6), then the distance for the radius of the region to the axis of rotation would be 6 - x. Sorry but this probably only confused you more. I know this isn't the best explanation :(

why do we not get the same volume if we rotate about x = -2? The inner radius of 2 units is maintained and we go from 0 to 4. Should we not get the same volume?? in this case r = 2+x
@masonmunkey6136

logically rotating about x=-2 should have a greater volume because the taller part of the graph is on the outside and moves farther

y=0, then x=0??? shouldn't 0 be on the y-axis? why did tou put on the x-axis? can anyone explain this to me please?
@drewpass5697
@drewpass5697 5 жыл бұрын
The equation is y = 0 and this is a horizontal line. All the points on the x-axis are of the form (x, 0), meaning they are all the points on a horizontal line which have the y-coordinate being zero. Had it been x = 0 this would've been the y-axis since x = 0 would represent the vertical line in which all the points are of the form (0, y). In broad terms, any equation of the form y = b, where b is some number, represents a horizontal line in which all the points are of the form (x, b). The equation x = a, where a is some number, represents a vertical line in which all the points are of the form (a, y).
