My mom did this. She gave up during Covid. She was in a nice nursing facility, 92 years old. She had a bad fall, and we could not visit other than through the window. She decided to stop eating and drinking. I brought in Hospice, this allowed us to visit during Covid. We took turns daily, encouraged her to eat, but she refused. She died in about 10 days. It was very peaceful with Hospice.

My grandma chose this way to pass back in 2014. She had suffered a minor fall one morning, (nothing broken). As a precaution she was taken to the hospital, and the nurses wanted her to get up and walk the halls. My grandma said no, she was tired of living, and had nothing more to live for. She was months away from turning 100. A nurse told her that everyday she chose to not get up and walk, there was less and less chance that she ever would. Long story short, grandma went to a nursing home, where she stopped eating and drinking. Family visited everyday. She did complain of thirst even towards the end. One evening I called the nursing home and they said that no-one was with grandma, so I went over. Turns out that was our last time together. I could tell that she couldn't see, but she could hear. I read some of her favorite Bible scriptures and stayed with her until she passed. I've sadly witnessed a few people who passed in front of me, bu!but I thought that grandma's death was ugly and raw. The United States medical community and legislators should reevaluate their stance on end-of-life care. Prolonging life should not come at the cost of prolonging suffering. Just as we show mercy to our beloved pets when they are suffering, we should afford humans the same dignity and allow them to depart peacefully. With the aging population and dwindling number of medical professionals, it is essential that we address this issue and prioritize humane end-of-life care.

Thank you very much for posting this description of the process. Both my mother and her sister chose to stop eating and drinking water after they turned 98. Neither had any significant disease diagnosis, but both were unable to enjoy their favorite pursuits: reading, and playing bridge among others, because of macular degeneration. Hearing loss made communication difficult as well. For each, it took over a month to die. Hospice was consulted in advance. They needed only morphine, and the nurses said the doses were significantly lower than most patients requested. Both women remained conscious until a day or two before they died. These deaths occurred in 2010 and 2012. I do not remember hearing the term "VSED" at that time. This is the first time I have encountered it.

My Dad did this quite a while ago. He had broken his hip and was in a nursing home. But my Mom decided to put a feeding tube in him (he did not want it) and he died that night. I was angry with my Mom for quite a while and finally she said, she did it for her-I understand that now but I have told my children that they are NOT to do that to me. Stopping eating and drinking doesn’t hurt, I’ve been told by a patient. Retired RN here.

If you are in NY and considering this, you’ll need an advanced directive and a MOLST order where you specify no artificial nutrition and hydration. For everyone: you should also make a video explaining why you are choosing this route that demonstrates you are lucid and of sound mind. You can also have a written VSED statement that you have notarized. Your lawyer, caregivers and doctor should all have copies. Try to find a hospice in advance that will work with VSED. If not, you may have to reach the point of no return before they will come in. But at the very least you can ask the doctor to prescribe you medications for pain and anxiety. As a hospice caregiver dying from dehydration is primarily what I see as the ultimate demise anyway. People get weaker and sleep more and don’t have the urge to eat or drink and once thoroughly dehydrated, they perish. VSED mimics true natural death, and you can always change your mind in the early stages. It gives me great comfort to know that if I get a terminal DX or life altering disease this option exists. It’s empowering.

And I'm calling the S hotline. I DO NOT WANT TO DIE, HOWEVER I DON'T KNOW HOW TO LIVE LIKE THIS. I wish people would understand that. Also my very own doctor when I asked him to watch a 7-minute video about what my underlying condition is he said he would watch it and then I found out that he never watched it. That's how bad healthcare is now. And try getting any kind of pain relief well that's a joke I really feel the whole thing is like a evil system that just has a person like me who is intelligent sometimes more than the doctor and can't really get anywhere. I'm not going to get better I'm not going to have a healing this is me getting worse. I have meltdowns at 66 years old because I get overwhelmed so easy and cannot regulate those emotions. I'm in a state where I don't know what to do and I have heard of what you're talking about I don't know that I could do it unless I had some support Thank you for bringing everything you do out into the open everybody's fighting for life and fighting for life and fighting for life To me, my question is why? Why If you're so miserable like I am fighting for more of it is not a very intelligent choice.

There is always hope never give up in life. There is hope in Jesus Christ. Did you know that God really loves you and wants a relationship with you. There will be a time that we will all face Gods judgement. God is righteous and Holy and we are all sinners. In a court of Law if you commit a crime and you was found guilty you will be punished and be sent to jail. Gods prison is Hell and because we are all sinners we will be found guilty. The 10 commandments is where we see if you have committed any sin’s or not. Have you ever lied? Have you lust over someone? Have you ever taken something that was not yours? Have you ever said omg or used Jesus Christ name as a curse word ? These are only 4 of Gods commandments and if you have said yes to any of these questions I’m not judging you but on judgement day God will judge you and will find you guilty for these sins and will be sent to eternal punishment. The good news is Jesus Christ came and paid the price for your sins He took the punishment we deserve . He died on the cross and If you believe in your heart that Jesus died and was raised on the third day and repent and ask in prayer for forgiveness of your sins you will be saved. Which means on judgement day because you have believed and trusted in Jesus and have faith in Him and have been forgiven,on judgement day God will let you go and you will be saved from going to eternal punishment. Jesus was sacrificed to save you and everybody else because of the love He has for us John 3:16 For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. Romans 10: 9 If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. The gospel is not God hatefully saying turn to me or I'll send you to Hell the gospel is God's mercy and Grace saying you're already on your way to Hell turn to me and I’ll save you. Dear @kavitadeva Allowing nature to take its course is not the same as forcing the issue by deliberate suicide. I am not a doctor but I do know the difference between having a bearable quality of life and being self destructive. I have been in both situations and have in my younger days made errors involving these choices. Now I am nearing the end of my life, I do not choose suicide, and likewise, I do not desire to prolong poor quality of life either with drugs and surgeries if I get to a certain stage. I am in the situation now where I will speak to my doctor as soon as I need to make legal medical decisions for future treatment whilst I am 'of sound mind' as they say. The doctor who is dealing with my issues will help me make these steps legally and safely in accordance with my needs and I will also have a trusted family member involved. I hope this helps. As to the biblebashers who jump on board and take advantage of every persons weakness to push their beliefs on people, remember, if you are interested in religion there are established Christian churches where there are trustworthy Priests, who have been ordained through thousands of years old traditional and historical tried and tested Theological training and who know what they are talking about and that it is an individuals choice which should not be coerced or prompted by fear. I have an autistic member in my family and I know that online knowalls can do a lot of harm. If one needs spiritual guidance, there are plenty of Traditional Churches to find a Spiritual director, Likewise, if one needs a doctor, they too are available and trained in their respective fields of expertise. Hope you get on ok ❤

Two months ago my brother n law just stopped eating/drinking/talking … he was with my sister who had Alzheimer’s in an apartment connected to the nursing home. When she had to go to the nursing home first … he sold their house (with daughter’s help) … then he went in to be with her ( he was frail and needed help anyway). They were there about two to three years. When he stopped eating etc., Hospice was called … I don’t remember exactly how long he lasted but his daughter said he contacted Covid and ran 103 Temp … and died. (They are in MT and I in Alabama). This all happened to him about two months ago … they moved my sister to a single room … and she was alone … her Alzheimer’s had progressed a lot. My niece called me yesterday and my sister had stopped eating/drinking/talking … just like her husband did. So as of yesterday my sister is on Hospice and actively dying … nurse said maybe she had two days left? Her daughter had a dream the night before that a young woman was telling her that her Mom had died and in the dream … she recognized that the young woman was her Mom! She hugged her and then she woke up. She told her husband about the dream and she said she wouldn’t be surprised if the nurse called her that day. Well … Hospice Nurse called her that afternoon and my niece said it gave her goosebumps … her Mom was Actively Dying … maybe had two days! This couple had been married 65 years … both in their middle 80’s … now they will be together for Eternity soon! She was seven years older than me … I am the middle child … our baby brother has been gone for 28 years … our dad died two years before his son and my Mother lived 15 years longer than my dad. My husband and I moved my Mother in with us … had a light stroke that affected her left side. My husband died three years ago from a massive heart attack in front of me … so now all my family are gone and his! Immediate Family that is! I am in the same town with my middle son and family … not completely alone … but live alone for the first time ever. This is all part of the Cycle of Life … I had to write this for my sanity! And my first cousin died July 16th! It feels like I am in a nightmare but I am not … just experiencing life to the end and thought I would share! 🙏🏻🙏🏻❤️❤️🇺🇸🇺🇸🫶🏻

With the feeding tube, he became well enough to leave the hospital by ambulance. He 'lived' another two weeks and was back in the hospital. My mom had the hospital put a feeding tube in again. She called us again to come and we were all furious that she wouldnt let him die. Finally, my mom left the room to call me and guve me an update and he passed away while she was gone. By the time she gor back it was too late to do anything. He knew as long as she was there she would keep him alive against his will. Because my dad had dementia, she got to make all the decisions even though the rest of the family said she was just dragging things out. To be honest, there needs to be a point where the rest of the family can override the spouse if the spouse is not making reasonable decisions.

Feeding tubes in advanced dementia is a terrible decision. The body in that end stage stops being able to take food. If the demented person cannot take pureed foods or thickened liquids and does not respond to the offer of the food when fed, then they are ready to transition. But some people feel that if they do not hospitalize and use all medical means necessary, then they are complicit. It is a lack of education on end of life.

I am in constant pain, and lost my health insurance last Dec. and so now I cannot get any of my meds that were keeping me alive. All my Dr.s never gave a time frame, but they have said I am a "ticking time bomb". I appreciate this video, and have been actually discussing this with my husband and daughters. I don't want my hubby to come home and find me "gone" I feel this way would be easier as he could be by my side. We have been together for 37 years now. My daughters say I am being selfish and now making me feel guilty for wanting to take control of my life for once. I have diabetes( now uncontrolled because I no longer can get my insulin) I had a double by-pass 10 years ago and need another now on the left side ofmy heart, I have severe peripheral neuropathy, Polycythemia Vera,which I was supposed to start chemo for this past April, and my gastroparesis has gotten so bad I can't keep food down and it's become very painful, also have PAD and Athrosclerosis... I've lost over 160 lbs now. Was supposed get a feeding tube as well this past spring, but again not an option with no health care. I already experience a lot of the symptoms you've talked about when having 6 months or less. All I want to eat is smoothies, ice cream and ice. Am I being selfish in wanting to do VSED??

If you are not of sound mind and have signs of confusion, even if these are your wishes, your POA can force IV fluids, feeding tubes, restraints etc. It's devastating and feels like we are torturing humans. ALWAYS make sure you pick a POA who knows all your wishes and will support that and not involve their feelings. Advanced care directives will also protect yourself if you arent of 100% sound mind, it's so easy to go into a bit of a delirium due to say infection or dehydration and now your wishes are not followed and the decision then becomes your POAs (or if you have written advanced care directives)

@@NoseyNana in my experience surgeons are *the* worst for embracing death and dying and want to save everyone, regardless. Fluids can make death more painful/uncomfortable. When very ill, usually it becomes a situation of is this treatment going to prolong life, or is it going to just prolong death. If you're prolonging death it's a very respectable decision to halt all interventions and focus on comfort measures. My aunt and uncle both were in their late 80’s in a nursing home in separate rooms. My aunt had Alzheimer’s, my uncle dementia. My cousin told us my uncle confided in her that they were depleting THIER savings and he wanted my aunt to have enough money to continue to stay there. He said he was going to stop eating & drinking. I didn’t ask how long that lasted but he did pass. My aunt passed 2 weeks later. She didn’t know, she had quit recognizing him along time ago. They were married over 60 years. I don’t think they told the nursing home. Now that is true love.

When theres no will to live & you are totally miserable and youve had enough then i believe its ok to be sedated to numb the pain of your reality. I hope if im suffering someone will do whatever it takes to keep me comfortable and peaceful.

Thank goodness I live in Canada where we have MAID (Medical Assistance in Dying). Not do-it-yourself. Requires physician involvement. Intravenous injection. You just go peacefully to sleep. Takes mere minutes. Only problem for dementia patients (at this point in time), you can't have an Advanced Directive for this.
@lyndatullett53195 ай бұрын
Yes we have it but heard a report that when done autopsy they discovered people actual drowned to death and could say or do anything because they've been given medication that won't let you move . That's the report I heard. Had a friend do it and I was so upset to think she felt like she was drowning 😢
@Moo2oob5 ай бұрын
@@lyndatullett5319 Hmm... unfortunately there are conservative detractors of MAID who create false narratives like that. That's the report you "heard"? Source? It's nonsense. For one thing, autopsies are not performed on people who exercised their right for MAID. The death certificate indicates the cause as the patient's underlying disease. There is no reason for an autopsy. Relatives of the patient also say it was the most beautiful and peaceful process to witness. A celebration of their life before the procedure as well.
@annjames18375 ай бұрын
@@lyndatullett5319I also heard this. And also people who are depressed can choose MAID. Maybe the slippery slope has come to Canada. Scary

Assistance in dying is murder. Download the gate way bible app and read the gospel of John and you can learn how Jesus came to save you. Please watch a video called: JESUS saved me from HELL 🔥!! ⚠️ Warning! Thank you for educating me about this option. As someone w/ progressive MS, my quality of life is nonexistent. No DMD’s work are effective. I’ve lost the ability to do participate in hobbies that gave me pleasure. I can’t drive and depend on my married daughter to bring me everything. I sleep all day, not by choice, but because of MS. I’m tired of going to a gazillion doctor’s appointments. The tremors, trouble speaking, mobiity and balance issues and now dependence on diapers is the last straw. Before my MS progressed, I was a different person; happy and outgoing. Now everyone’s talking about putting in a nursing home. I’m not afraid of death, as my Salvation in Christ is strong. What I am afraid of is a family member not honoring my wishes.

I have progressive Lupus. I think about VSED and have a death doula whi could accompany me. Do yiu think that this will be punished in the afterlife? I am worried about this, but I can't live one like this.
@denisek2924 ай бұрын
@@LiLaLizzy8 I’m deeply sorry you are suffering. You did nothing to cause yourself to develop Lupus, nor cause its progression. If you’re a Christian, you will not lose your salvation. The unforgivable sin is not believing in Christ. Catholicism believes you will, but that’s nowhere in the KJB. I had a Christian counselor, a very Godly woman, tell me suicide does not send you to hell. A precious man at my church, committed suicide. He had taken wonderful care of his wife, who had Alzheimer’s for several decades…he brought her to church looking beautiful, even though I know she wore diapers….total commitment to his wife. After she died, he met a sweet lady. They were engaged to marry, but her grown children (who I think were extremely selfish and more worried about their inheritance) convinced her NOT to marry him. He was crushed, and took his life. There’s no doubt in my mind he’s in Heaven. Think about this: During 9/11, some people jumped to their death. Do you believe those, that were Christians are in hell? I don’t. It was either burn to death, or chose another way to end their suffering. We’re in the same boat. We’re suffering. Lupus is a cruel, cruel disease, especially when it progresses. In my honest opinion, modern medicine only makes suffering worse, as they ply you full of medicines made to extend our lives. You’ve probably been on meds like those. The last MS drug my neurologist prescribed, has only created more suffering. Is the cancer patient, who refuses chemo, and is a Christian, going to hell? No. VSED is legal in all 50 states. I live in Alabama, the heart of the Bible Belt, and it’s legal here. You are not going to be punished for deciding not to eat or drink to hasten death. Yes, everyone will stand before God in judgement.. Believers in Christ know their fate is Heaven. Unfortunately, non-believer’s fate is sealed, which is tragic. Please know I have already prayed for you, and won’t stop. You are precious in Christ’s sight. I may not be far behind you. God bless you, my sister in Christ.

@@EC-yd9yv It is the loneliness and deterioration via MS that has “paralyzed” me. I’m so sorry you suffer from chronic pain: I know what it’s like, and the CDC and DEA have contributed to decreased quality of life. My daughter just found-out she’s pregnant, so I won’t for now. Honestly, I’m anxious. Her mother-in-law has already taken-over, never acknowledged me, except calling me “white trash.” Don’t get me wrong, I’m happy for my daughter, but my energy levels and money can’t compete w/ MIL. My neurologist just put me on a stronger antidepressant. I want to be the MeMaw that my my MeMaw was; she died when I was 8. She is the only person in my life who gave me unconditional love, not my parents. Please pray for me, and I will do the same for you. My prayer for you is God will ease your pain and bless you.❤

I had a family member who choose to do this not very long ago. She had cancer and knew her time was limited. She lived with her daughter who couldn’t handle dealing with her any longer. Her daughter said she didn’t want to spend money to put her mother anywhere or hire anyone to care for her. She took her mother to the hospital and told them she couldn’t handle her mother any longer. Her mother then made the decision to stop eating and drinking. Her doctors let her stay in the hospital and did help her get through the process. I thought the whole thing was horrible. She only made the decision because of her daughter refusing to care for her any longer.

Thank you for your informative channel. Veterans facing the civil and human rights abuse of untreated pain should have access to VSED at VA hospitals. The cost of private hospice for VSED is way out of my reach financially. If the VA has issues with the care involved in VSED, I would be willing to waive the care if they provide a bed and simply bear witness to one of the many known 'unintended consequences' of their disastrous pain policy.
