In November 2018, I flew from Sydney to Johannesburg, South Africa, to spend nearly a month volunteering at Kevin Richardson's Wildlife Sanctuary. I had an incredible time and I can't wait to go back.

Before you comment about the horse heads, continue reading. The whole reason I made this film was transparency around what life is like at the sanctuary as a volunteer. I receive a tonne of messages each week asking me some great questions about it and I was hoping this film could answer them. A frequent question I am asked is “why are you feeding horses?” Or “where does their food come from?”. So instead of repeating myself, I will explain it here. ALL animals that the animals eat is donated by local farmers. These local farmers rely on their livestock as an income for their homes and families. When these animals are sick, injured or too old, they are put down. If the sanctuary didn’t exists, the farmers would put them down and most likely eat what they can and throw what’s left into a burn pit. Instead, the sanctuary as built up relationships with these farmers and will drive to their farms to collect the animals and bring them back to the sanctuary to prepare for the lions, hyenas and leopards. This is by far the best situation for all involved. People only seem to be bothered by the fact that I was feeding Thor and Charlie a head - as I said earlier, this film was made with transparency as a priority and did specifically say in the narration feeding day wasn’t for everyone! Horses and zebras (one of the lions favourite meals) share similarities in their anatomy which means these beautiful animals are being fed a very similar diet to their cousins in the reserve. It may not be pretty, but it is a reality of running the sanctuary. Carnivores have to eat! I hope this answers some questions and clears up the confusion. If you do have any more questions by all means ask away and I will get back to you. Thank you again for watching my video!

Wonderful camera work... only one tiny suggestion - enunciate... a few times it was hard to make out what you were saying, e.g. after rewinding, couldn't make out what you were saying when chopping down trees @4:52. And one wish... that it was a little longer, but then you left me wanting more, so that's good too. ;-)

Excellent overview of what life as a volunteer must be at Kevin's sanctuary. Could have taken much more !! I won't even waste my time reading people's comments on the horses heads, as I am sure they just have a big, visceral reaction instead of using their brains and EDUCATE themselves first (typical in this age of social medias)! Your explanation is right to the point and frank. And even though I love horses very deeply (I would rather ride them and groom them than eat them-never-ever), I understand perfectly well carnivores, especially captive carnivores, must be fed meat, not tofu ! And the fact that the sanctuary has developed such a great and useful partnership with farmers is the best way to show everyone that wild and domestic animals have a place on the Earth as well as us, and with hard work, EDUCATION and understanding, cohabitation can actually work !! Cheers !!

Educate themselves. A touch ignorant don't you think. It's not about the head. Just like we love lions most of us are animal lovers and of course the lions have to eat. But can you understand that it is very upsetting for some to see this. Desperate people do desperate things and im sure not all the FOOD is sick old or injured. There would be a pay off to the farmers for their (DONATIONS).

Several years ago I watched a lion pride video where all the females we're trying to catch a baby buffalo which had slid down a small embankment on a river. This was my first time ever reading the comments which people leave, I was a bit shocked! Too many people were saying the lions are murders & how can the people video taping this allow that to happen. I was flabbergasted how disconected so people are to what really happens in nature. I yelled back in my response they can't go to the market like we can & what's some of the food we eat? Fluffy lamb, cuddly rabbits & doey eyed calf, (I choose to list the cutest)! We just don't see what they look like anymore, packaged in styrofoam & plastic wrap doesn't like warm & cuddly... I love wildlífe & everything that goes with it💙💚!

Lena-Marie Högl I understand where you’re coming from - it is a strange concept to pay someone to work for them. But that money is going towards your food, accomodation, the sanctuary, maintenance, petrol, water, washing, getting picked up and dropped off at the airport, weekend activities and countless other parts of volunteering there. It took me nearly a year to save enough money to volunteer for nearly a month and I am already saving to go back again. If you do love Kevin’s work and you do love the animals, I can guarantee you will love volunteering and it will be worth every cent.

I'm sold, as soon as possible I would love to see this park with my own eyes instead of through a screen. You said that Kevin was out promoting the movie, but did he ever return, and if so, would you have been able to talk to him? He is an inspiration of mine, and I would do much for an opportunity to even just hold a conversation with him.

Fantastic news! I’m so glad my film helped push you over the line and decide to go! Yes, while I was there Kevin left in the first week but he went out of his way to see us and spend over an hour talking to each of us and answering our questions, thanking us for coming and we were all extremely thankful for this. When you do volunteer and if Kevin is in the country, you will 100% be able to talk to him.

Omg, wow this was amazing 👌👌👍👍👍👏👏❤❤ I watched a lot of Kevin videos but in this one that lion was recorded not so up close I saw how big they are ,yes Kevin have a lot of full body too but most of his interactions are close so it's the head of the lion, back of the lion. I mean I really enjoy watching this as much as I love Kevin video

What a dream come true Kevin Richardson is one of my absolute inspirational people and his tireless work in raising awareness and the conservation of lions , leopards amd hyena's and their environment is essential in a world and its wildlife that is in a critical state . If I was younger I would have loved to volunteer my time but unfortunately all I can to is give donations and spread Kevin's important message as frequently as I can and if this brings awareness and makes just one person involved then at least I know have have helped make a change .

The Lionesse still photo attached to this particular video is of darling Meg, looking menacing and very alpha predator like I’ve never seen her before. A great reminder of why Kevin is such an extraordinary man to move so freely and comfortably throughout these big cats!

I was a little shocked seeing the horse heads but I totally understand thats what they have to eat and that the animal isn't going to waste. I know those animals are thankful for their food. And I'm sure the horses are treated better there than the cows here in the states that are in very unethical conditions throughout their life. Loved seeing the elephants 😩❤🐘 so wonderful

Thank you for this perspective! So much goes into the day to day that we don't get to see but wish we could. Have to admit though...the horse head disturbed my inner animal lover. Once that passed though I have to wonder how much meat is really on a head? Anyway thank you for a look behind the scenes. I would absolutely love seeing a daily vlog like this...but even deeper into the day to day. I imagine it would cost a fortune but wouldn't it be amazing
@yellowtail_films

That would be very cool to watch! In regards to the horse heads, there is a considerable amount of meat on them but it also acts as good enrichment for the lions being able to manipulate the head with their paws, jaws and teeth. It is a lot slower for them to eat and they need to use their brain a lot more rather than scoffing down their normal food! It is great to watch.

Thank you for making the video and your volunteer service. The only part of reality that is very bothersome is lions killing cubs that aren't theirs or lions killing other lions. Reality is that wild and free makes for a dangerous and violent life.

I've enjoyed watching this video and hoped it was longer. I don't understand the issue on feeding them horse since its common knowledge that these animals are carnivorse. I think people should learn from the message this kinds of videos bring. If only we cared for all the animals and their habitat they will not be forced to live in captivity. We should take care of the only planet we have. Thank you for sharing your experience with us.
