Damn David, you made that look easy. Also I am jealous, ... again, when ever I see you walk through a wrecking yard with all those Volvos available. There is no such yard in Rockhampton. Thanks for a beautifully instructive video.

I am grateful for the access, but often time saddened to see what gets left behind. Another local yard had a 1979 245 that looked very clean in the photos. 😞 Thanks for watching Gary :)

Dear David Bello and Sarah with son. 👍👌👏 Very well done again and as always (video and work). What a pity that almost new tires got destroyed by bad luck. I'm really glad that the steering repair went so well and I hope that you have a real good alignment shop nearby. Maaaan, I would love to own a C70. I know that not all cars can be rescued respectively not all are worth saving. Nevertheless: It's always sad for me to see relatively good looking/rust free cars sitting in the junkyard/scrapyard. As always: Thanks a lot for making teaching explaining recording editing uploading and sharing. Best regards luck and health to all of you. 💚💚💚

Thanks for the video David. Quick solution in this way, I recently restored an older type '83 rack, is doable with simple tools. The green book tells you al about the adjustment for left and right oil press. balance. Good luck and regards from Holland

My tips: hammer a big flathead into the ujoint before loosening the rack to spread it a little. Also, big pipe wrench is good for getting off inner tie rods, also before removing the rack.

Holy heck, that is some perfect timing! I have been wondering if my steering rack is going bad or not. At the point where the steering column meets the rack, is there a place to tighten the rack to take play out? The steering is one of the few parts of my car I haven't touched yet.

Harbor Freight has a good inner TR removal set for like 40. I always buy the special tool because we own these cars for life so I'm willing to amortize. Made it easier. Important but difficult to hold the rack arm, you don't want to damage seals in the pinion by torquing on that.

This is exactly what I've done twice. I look in the rack boots and if it's dry I pull the rack.

There may be more value in saving that rack to have it rebuilt (eventually), versus returning it to the wrecking yard for your core charges.

C70 interior is factory. Had a drive in an identical one and they were the absolute best seats of any car I have ever been in.

My mom had an s60 with ripping seats, and I put in some C70 seats which were a whole different level of comfy and leather. I think they got the better leather for the increased UV exposure. I learned to drive stick in a T5M C70 so I have a soft spot for them!

If you look up "Volvo 240 steering rack shaft guide" should one of those bushings maybe fix the vobble problem?
@DavidBello2 жыл бұрын
I see what you mean, and I was curious to find only one side on both racks had that bushing. Most of the advertisers of the polyurethane bushing specify it is for manual steering cars only But I do think our old rack was worn beyond a new bushing’s help

Sad! :( you’re sure it’s the rack? The P2s make clunks for many reasons
@phishphood4232 жыл бұрын
@@DavidBello I think so unfortunately...sounds like a hydraulic clunk when turning the wheel to one side and quickly turning it back, especially to the left. Had it up on jack stands last month and it seemed like there was some play in the pinion gearset as well. Real bummer! (and expensive)

Use Ford "Type F" fluid. not Dexron of universal power steering.Yes TRW is CAM. Yes, that is ZF on that 1986 with the big bellow ends. New inner and outer tie rods. NLGI 2 grease in the bellow chamber for the inner tie rod and the geared slide shaft only so much as to allow air to pass between the left and right bellows. The new grease lubes the geared slide rack and the inside of the white hardened nylon bushings inside the rack as you know. Disconnect the low pressure return at the reservoir. With removed belt, spin the pulley (direction ?) and as it drains replace with Ford "Type F". Use a three-five pound hammer and bang the Pitman arm outer circumference and use a level to pull down on the steering arm assembly. Watch the outer tie rode boot if you mean to re-use it. All strut mounts for 240, PN 1272455, are junk. Volvo is using junk after market like Meyle or MTC. All use a sealed bearing that spins fine yet suffers the up and down action and can fail in a year or two. Volvo used Boge and SKF. These used a ball bearing race under the dust cap. Use synthetic silicon NLGI 2 grease like SuperLube to lube these yet they are no longer made. Only option is BNE Dynamics and the cheaper of their two steel strut mounts.

About $85 for a new in Europe Don't know shipping costs from Europe to the US, but if we can shop parts for US cars directly from the US.. Shopping for Volvo parts in Europe might be a better option. Since David said he knows of 3 different racks in the 240s I'm guessing this is for late model 240s? As a late model 240 owner myself I'd be really delighted if that list applied to mine - just in case.

@burepajkn4975 ATF and Power Steering Fluid are chemically nearly identical and interchangeable. only differences between the types (dex, merc, etc) is additives and friction modifiers. They're really pretty much the same thing. (Hence why SO many cars call for ATF in their power steering reservoirs.) You're trying to bog down with semantics here. It makes so little difference it's pointless to even waste time talking about it
