Be prepared to be surprised at how much it will struggle! We've got a military vehicle off-road Meetup we like to have out in Indiana that happens a few times a year. Last winter, we did a January meet where there was just a bit if snow down, but the ground was frozen. It was just shocking to see how badly _all_ the trucks faired in getting over simple obstacles just because they couldn't bite into any of the terrain. Everything from small CUCV trucks to 5-ton 6x6s.

This brings back memories from the previous millenium. I was a driver on one of these beast back in 1997-98 up in Boden here in Sweden. We didn't have the fancy tires and I actually drove the TGB20 version, which was slightly longer and was a troops carrier with 18 fully kitted out soldiers sitting in the back ready to jump out the sides. It was glorious. I relally, really wish I had bought one back when they were dead cheap.

@@WhateverMotorsport the two drivers I rode with for 10 months in the Swedish army during conscript training back in 03-04 never seemed to have any problems in getting where ever the Captain wanted to deploy our 12cm towed mortars. Regardless if on snow, sand, gravel, mud or bowling over 2m tall stands of growing Juniper bushes in any incline XD

This is a C304/4143. The C306 is a flatbed troop carrier with a longer wheelbase. Aka Terrängbil 20.

I am familiar with the 712 Pinz and the Land rover defenders I have a couple buddies that run those I run a Unimog and have never seen a Volvo 306 in person but in this video it looks like an extremely impressive vehicle she looks like it could hang with the best with no problems! They have reversed rear springs on rear 2 axles with ends sliding on axle blocks, thats where most of the creaks come from.

They are supposed to sound like that, as long as the engine doesn't sound like someone threw a box of bolts in a tumbel dryer, that volvo engine just keeps going. And when it breaks down, it's almost always possible to fix with less than 50€ of spare parts and hand tools. It was built to be driven in those conditions by generation after generation of 18yo conscripts for decades on end...

4x4 does 115km/h and takes 15L/30L per 100km highway/offroad. 6x6 does 105 km/h and takes like 20-25/35L. This was my experience during my national service in the early 80's. There was also a two bench troop transport built on the 6x6 chassi that did 100km/h in good wind and took even more fuel. Still, these vehicles were very comfortable and economical compared to the Hägglunds Bv206 bandwagon whose Ford V6 took like 100L per 100km and which was noisy as hell. I've never had a more hair raising offroad experience in any other vehicle, they can do an insane amount of tilt in all directions. Good tires and tractor style chains with outward facing U links and you're set for any terrain.
