As a big fan of Volvo I feel a little bit sad seeing that... I really felt like that brand had something special that I loved.. It was like the sleeper of luxury in a nice looking well thought package. And this new car is the complete opposite of that.. I hope the US and EU lineup will not go on this path

I'm not sure about the rest of (East) Asian countries, but as someone from Thailand this is really a good move from Volvo. If we're talking about buying cars here, people (except car guys) don't really put much thought into brand DNA or whatsoever. They can only differentiate car into categories like cheap/mass, premium, and supercar/RR. - Toyota, Honda, Mazda, Ford, other Chinese brands for average people. - But once you can afford MB, BMW, Volvo and minivan like Toyota Alphard or Lexus LM (maybe Hyundai Staria too), then people will treat you differently with more respect (not sure if this the right word but basically different classes). You might heard before that minivan reputation here is quite good and maybe (at least in Thailand) even better than driving those European cars. And people who can afford those European brands will consider getting minivan instead mainly because they have family specifically kids. Not exactly sure why but this is from my experience. Partly might be cause Bangkok traffic that one way commute from home to school is +/- 1 hour so kids kinda live in the car every morning and after school. So why is this a good move from Volvo? Currently when people here in that target group think about what is their next car. It is not between European cars and minivans, but it's actually European cars vs Toyota Alphard (or Lexus if they're rich). Even used Alphards hold extremely good value which shows a big gap between demand and supply in this segment. Also Volvo's reputation has been on a rise in these recent years, so it's a big opportunity to capitalize on that. It's not just European car that people already think that you're rich, but it's also minivan. Don't forget that this might apply in Asia, specifically Thailand.

I think the big issue with the differentiation between volvo and polestar is powertrains. The polestars should have more powerful powertrains. I think the polestar 3 should be more of a plaid rival, and the 2 should be a proper model 3 rival, 4 model y rival, 5 model s rival, and 6 being a roadster rival. Then I also think the volvo ex90 needs more range. Now on the topic topic of a larger volvo, a minivan just doesn't work. It could be great as an uber but for nothing else. What they should have is a competitor too the escalade IQ, establishing them as a proper luxury brand. I feel like volvo is not only loosing it's identity but also going extremely mainstream...and also lexus, I'm looking at you too.

While I agree with you comment minivans like this Volvo EM90, Lexus LM and other similar models for other brands sell like hot cakes in the South East Asian markets of China, Singapore, Japan and especially Hong Kong. If the EM90 is a bit like a Porsche SUV for Volvo in term of being a massive cash cow and then allow the company to make other models better suited to Europe and North America this is a compromise worth accepting.

In a time when Lotus and Ferrari makes 2-tonne SUVs, the French brands ditches unique, forward looking and smart design in favour of cheap retro or over styled generic designs and when sport coupe names like Mustang, Eclipse, Puma, and Capri end up on stupid crossovers for people who probably don´t care about cars or the history of these names, Volvo making an MPV is the least offensive to me. In fact, they should have done it 35-40 years ago. It would have been a perfect match to the functional, rather boring and family friendly image they had in the 80:ies.

Volvo was bought by Geely in 2010 and this is the first non-looking Volvo that they've produced. I think Volvo and Volvo division in China decided that they needed to make a car that appeals to the Chinese market. So, they made this China-only, so far, Volvoized Zeekr009. It's a way hopefully for Volvo to at least one car that sells decently in China.

But still Volvo missed some parts that Ford did take advantage of. Ford had ads in newspapers late 80's early 90's that said 'Volvo is made in Sweden. Ford is made For Sweden'. And they were a bit right. Volvo missed some good components that make it easier to live with cars in Sweden. One of them was electric heated front screen, something Volvo didn't get until S40/V50/C30... And yes, when Ford was the owner of Volvo 😁

If i don't understand it wrong, isn't Seekr, Polestar and Volvo design in Sweden. despite its Geely owning them all?
@benjaminsmith2287
@benjaminsmith2287 11 ай бұрын
Correct. Geely Group owns them. Zeekr is a fairly newly created brand that has a design center in Sweden. They create cars for mostly the Chinese market. Volvo is a legacy Swedish brand acquired by Geely Holding (Geely Group) in 2010. Polestar was the sports skunkworks of Volvo and has spun off from Volvo and is a Swedish brand. They make cars for the international market but this particular Volvo is designed for the Chinese market and is a rebrand of the Zeekr009. I do want to make it clear that Zeekr and Volvo do not use the same design teams in Sweden while Volvo and Polestar's designers are connected and collaborate together.

In a way this is tribute to the past volvos: no aerodynamics and pure power. A flying brick. Also there was a Zeeker 009 that crashed into the back of a flatbed semi trailer. Trailer was bent and the A pillar stands ground like a classic Volvo thing. So I guess at least in terms of safety we don't have to worry about it.

So Mr Bembli, how would you redesign this minivan to look like a real Volvo? Another question is, why would you not like Volvo venturing into minivan? Just like how Porsche ventured into SUVs, why Volvo cannot? Why is it such a big issue? Car manufacturers evolve with the market and needs and wants of people, why is it so bad? Minivans are very practical people mover whether you like it or not and makes a lot of practical sense....

Volvo's styles improved immensely with the P2 cars, the Peter Horburg designed ones. The Ford era Volvos looked pretty good as well. But they really stepped up their style, inside and outside, with the SPA Volvos and that was done under Geely ownership. I did not like the 240. It was an extremely dated car with poor over the road dynamics for its time. The 760 was OK but too brick shaped. The 850 started to improve the look of Volvos and the 5 cylinder engine was cool. I do think today's Volvos are best as cars, but some of them are mechanical nightmares. However, there were older generation Volvos that were mechanical nightmares as well, like the ones with the 6-cylinder PRV engines.

Let's get some details right because a lot of people are getting details wrong. I think the Volvo EM90 is a misstep and disappointment but only because it is a rebrand not a Volvo like the EX30 is. This car is a rebrand of the Zeekr091. What is the Zeekr09?. So, people are saying it is a Geely and Chinese. First of all, what is Geely? Geely that owns Volvo and Polestar and Lotus and Zeekr is ZGH or Geely Holding which is similar to Stellantis or VW Group. They own a group of cars. They made some marques, they've acquired some marques. Geely Auto is like the VW brand, they don't own Volvo. Geely doesn't make Volvos or cars and put different badges on them, the brands have teams located somewhere the make the cars. Some are based on the Geely SEA platform, which incidentally was engineered by a Swede, and others are based on other platforms. The Zeekr brand is related to Lynk and Co. Lynk and Co. is actually a Swedish located brand with Swedish designers that design the cars that seem to be aimed toward the Chinese market. The Zeekr is also drawn by a Swedish team of designers. So despite its rather busy look, it is a Swedish design. But it isn't a Volvo design. It is not the same team of designers from Volvo Cars. Volvo, seemingly to get this out fast, just modified the Zeekr009 to created the EM90. This is the opposite of what they did with the EX30 which they used the SEA platform from, but made a Volvo, a real Volvo car that sits on that platform that doesn't look like the Zeekr X in any significant way. Now Volvo from 2000 on was more upscale that previous eras. The old Volvo market has gone to Subaru. And it was Swedish with the P2 cars. I feel the current cars are building on that era of Volvo, not earlier eras. And I think Volvo is very much a Swedish company now but also a global company as are a lot of other companies. Geely/Volvo relationship is complex but Volvo has, for the most part, kept its identity well and stayed headquartered and ,managed in Gothenburg with an international work force. I hope the EM90 rebrand is an exception as it is a for-China product. And hopefully, the next new Volvo is like the EX30, only introduced a few months ago, in being a Volvo and not a rebrand of some other brand. As for Polestar, they're an offshoot of Volvo and they share designers and development and materials and a very similar philosophy to Volvo. They also are full of ex-Volvo personnel. Polestar is a Volvo offshoot. It is a more sporting brand with a Scandinavian styling, but more swoopy overall. They are a handling, performance brand but not supercar brand like Lotus. This is how they differ from Volvo. It's not that one is BEV and the other isn't, it's how sporty the cars are and the styling characteristics will be different. Also Volvos may still be more roomy for cargo luggage vs. the more "coupe" designs of Polestars. And Polestar offers cars in "Spaces" while Volvo has traditional dealers but that will be modified in time.

Deluding the brand. But Asian market won’t mind. ever since I’ve spend a year in Japan I was impressed by the allure that “Sweden” can have to the mind of a human 10000 miles apart from the original. I mean, I am Southern German and was mistaken regularly for a Swedish person 😂 Badge Engineering - but the gear shifter. Wowsers. A cashflow project. Would’ve been nice to see a XC70/V70 like MPV… but nevermind. Time to move on.

The rear from behind could be any low rate Chinese minivan. The lower door has rounded corners?? Saving grace is its snout plus the rear side panel lift. Built to please the wealthy tasteless Chinese market. Rather uninspiring.

That's not a Volvo. That's simply something unoriginal and Chinese. No Volvo history there. The EX90 is really cool. But this design is ugly. Especially the little white fin in the side profile. It´s an impudence, that they slapped a Volvo logo on this Zeeker vehicle.

The part that sucks is how because of China starting to really cement itself in the market, manufacturers really need to start catering to them, and they seem to really like personality-less, generic blobs of metal, rubber and leather with touchscreens galore in the interior, which is ruining car design for everyone else around the world because manufacturers now have to bend over backwards to accommodate for China

Well, here is my middle finger to you. The whole touch screen BS begins with apple iphone. And on car, it was Tesla. Both of them are American. And lot of fxxking axxhole in the west praise that as revolutionary. We Chinese bought this BS and continue this trend and it is all of frenken sudden our fault? Did logic just left the chat?

The market now at days is just band and sameiy, i know that is not a hot take but seriously, everywhere you go is just a block or a blob with lines that don't make sence with some stupidly large grill and random logo, with a name that doesn't belong or represent what the car is, people like you and media from the past showed me how diversity and personality of a product is the most important and fun thing that any product must have to survive and thrive, thank you for doing these videos, your a big inspiration for me.

I know the EM90 supposed to be a comfortable living room on wheels, but it is friggin hideous to look at. I respect Volvo doing what it needs to maintain sales, but this looks like badge engineering. I am glad I will not have to see it on the road in the US.

We are now on our second Volvo in the family, luckily one of the last 5 cylinder from 2014. We absolutely love it and I consider myself a fan of the old Volvos. I already disliked how they became less individual quirky luxury cars (removal of r design etc) and going mainstream and all electric, but seeing this em90 straight up hurts me. Extirior, interior - it’s horrible :(

A V60 R Design stopped a Ford Explorer that lost control in snow and hit me head on. I wanted Volvo to be ok, but I think China has gobbled up what it could and now seems to not try very hard beyond badge engineering. I wish Sweden had bought the company itself.

Disagree. It isn't clear. This decision to do this could have been Volvo's idea. Why in over 10 years of ownership would Geely pull the strings? Volvo just came out with the EX30, not a rebrand, so why? I think Volvo made this decision or Volvo and their Chinese division made this decision.
