Cat has been using electric over hydraulic for years now, there 2d and 3d grade controls are cool once you get used to them, once you program it to the grade you want it will not let you dig past that grade but as you can tell I operate cat more than any other machine but I do still like the volvos we have too. It is good that they're finally catching up to what you can get a a cat for a few years now

They be setting these excavators up to be smarter than the operator! All seriousness though, these guys servicing these machines will need to trained in electronics and electrical and mechanical as well, wow, I will bet the service techs are going to be spending as much time training as working on these machines. I can see the benefits to the electronic controls in overall operation of the machine, thanks for the ride along sir.

Sounds great, but also sounds like the days of guys working on their own stuff or certain parts of that stuff are coming to an end. I'm sure you know farmers are suing John Deere over the right to farm. If your JD breaks down, a JD tech has to come and work on the software side. All the while - you're parked and not harvesting/planting/or whatever. Great video, thanks for keeping us abreast of new tech! Lee

Good Morning Mike. Wowww Tech is certainly improving in every aspect of our lives. Younger operators will probably use more of the options than the older guys do, but then it all depends on the jobsite. The screens need to be integrated together I'm surprised they didn't already do it to be honest.It's always fun seeing you test run a piece of equipment, got to keep up with the changes as they come. Almost 20 years ago, Terex had a material handler with electronic controls that they sent around the US and Canada as a demonstrater. They had similar stops that could be set to put material on the machine hoppers. We used it for about a week. One day, the cab heater controls wouldn't work. It was putting out maximum heat. I thought it might be a computer glitch so I told the operator to shut it down for two minutes then restart. That cured the problem with the heater. A couple of hours later, the boom ceased to operate. He again shut it down and restarted curing the problem. The next day the boom control stopped working again. The operator tried a restart then nothing worked. I ended up disconnecting the batteries for 5 minutes the re-connecting them and everything worked when it started so we had the operator move it out of the way to bring another machine in. Electronics are great, until they don't work. Computers have come a long way since then.

Mike that is IMPRESSIVE! I build swimming pools but not with the sized machines you run daily. Obviously we use mini’s, I’m curious if any of this tech is being or has been integrated into the mini’s? Or does Volvo even make a mini? Like anything else our grades are extremely important for budget constraints, this would be one great trainer and $$ saver!
@thomasdesmond22482 жыл бұрын
My concern with some of those options. Is what happens when you have a computer glitch. The machine won't let you do what you need to. Remember computers aren't perfect. They are programmed by people. Is there a way to master override? God bless

The technology is almost scary Mike. Getting to the point of artificial intelligence, where the machine may just decide to make decisions on its own because it's so smart.

At this rate, you could put Gunner in the seat and tell him to load a truck an it would only dig as deep as you want, the swing would be controlled so he didn't hit the truck and would do a lift the jib boom up to go over the truck and then dump his bucket in the truck. Now I know that I said this poorly but even say someone still learning the controls and how to do a proper load a truck function.. (I hope I can get this right) first do the fill bucket, now lift the different booms to get the right spot where the bed of the rig being loaded is at, it will lift the jib boom and curl the bucket for the operator??? I am almost certain it will not do quite that much yet or a dummy could be placed in the seat, it would automatically start loading by itself. I did better on my first try and just blew the last one for sure. I am a old man by most peoples thinking at seventy three. If I remember right, your right hand man who is retired, as you now figured, I forgot his name but it may come to me yet! I have troubles for sure with names, numbers are not so much so I can remember the number to my house but may not remember the name of the street. I can tell you right now that this is not fun at all. All my kids are sweetheart or sunny but their name is not coming to me till they leave and its too late to say Tommy or Becky. They do say that they understand my situation but the looks on their faces say different. It really hurts my feelings that I am this way. My nurse and the doctor I go to call it a partial dementia problem. Not to worry as my kids will forgive me. Some mornings I go around the house looking for my wife, and after a few minutes remember that I am divorced. While I was still a very wealthy man who was making a ridiculous amount of money in my lumber business and also my repair shops. I had seven figures in my banking account. I got hurt real badly with no personal insurances on me, just the wife and kids. After I came out of the coma I was in, doctors had their hooks into that money. I had to sell all of my equipment and then the land and buildings cause I was basically out of my head, I did not know even my wifes name or face. Doctors repeatedly said that I should of died when the vertebra at the top of my neck was mushed up.... its not like all the other vertebra's in the system where its gristle or bone. Its soft tissue that connects to the brain. I say stuff and someone gets their feelings hurt and I did not mean to do that at all. I am saying this Mike, I do wish now that I had died cause no one has stayed with me or been a truthful friend. A grandson would come to see me and ask, "Hey pops" can I use your wrecker or some of your tools? I had some of my older stuff that I would just clear out of the shop and fill a smaller garage I had for my hobby. I took older rigs that were ready to come off of the road for insurance reasons. I would replace all the running gear and fix any damages to it, then do my best shot at painting it up. Most came out "okay ish" but not real sweet. One day my grandson came in and told me he was getting married so I gave him that shop, the land under it.... about a small acre of land is all, a dump truck that ran great but needed a new tilt hood to be right, a old lowboy truck that was legal for the highway along with a fifty ton Rogers lowboy. All of my stuff still looked okay from fifty feet but then the different things like mud flaps ..... dang.... I just told you my life story and your not even going to read it. I am sorry and apologize for this.

Hey DP amazing technology on these excavators ,but I drive modern trucks that stop and are disabled by technology glitches that require a service tech to come out to fix it ,the driver can't get the modern truck going anymore it's usually some sensor that stops a 14 litre motor ,plus I think it will be interesting to see how guys like you get on when your so hands on with repairs to save money on maintenance costs,let's face it Dealer on site service is very costly .I think tech is fantastic but is it making better Drivers/OPERATORS or dumbing down our jobs I would be interested in your thoughts on one of your video,s MERRY XMAS HAPPY NEW YEAR TO YOU AND MRS DP AND THE KIDS KYM ADELAIDE
