Backing with a long-frame conventional body truck and a short drawbar, single-axle dolly is a challenge for sure. The dolly can get off line so quickly. A truck with tight steering capability helps. Given your experience with the trailer at the time of filming, I'd say you did well.

@@ДжекДэниелс-ф4ч I don't see the connection between your video and this video beyond your video being about trucking. Still, thank you. I thought that the trailer in your video might have been a steer-axle type but it wasn't. Steer axle trailers require a different driving style. Instead of swing wide, drive straight, turn late like regular trailers the driver of a steer axle trailer stays close to the inside of the turn, drives straight, and turns late. Cheers!

First job I had I got a 4-axle short drawbar trailer and a 6x2 MAN TGX26 480 hook truck. Not a lot of reversing but then I had to drive single truck (21-pallet 4x2 Volvo FM330) in Gothenburg to deliver hospital supplies). I never reversed a trailer for 3 months and then the company asked if I was interested in driving a night route with dolly-trailer. Driving a 25.25 meter long truck+dolly-trailer, at night and only 18 years old while being rusty. It was hard but some nice Polish dudes helped me somewhat so I knew how far it was to the next trailer over on the other side. Now I'm 19 years old and drive a semi+semi trailer every day but friday, cuz then I drive a Scania G440 6x2 and a 4-axle trailer with short drawbar. It's almost easier to reverse with drawbar than with a semi. You don't get that awful front wall on your other side when reversing and turning.
@leighmackay74863 жыл бұрын
@@tntfreddan3138 Thanks for sharing your experiences. Cool! My favourite rig is an 8x4 curtain-side Volvo/Scania box truck with steerable liftable tag axle and a two-axle dolly three axle curtain-side trailer with a liftable steerable tag axle. It's highly maneuverable in tight turn-around locations and the curtain sides make loading/unloading easy. The dual axle dolly is more resistant to getting off track as quickly as single axle dollies. Just my experience. Continued success to you. :)

I was pretty good with an artic, disappointing if I had to shunt. These drawbar trailers are much harder to master and I never got to practice. I used to watch the drawbar drivers reversing onto the lined bays at an old dairy I worked at as a new driver in the 90's, they could put the trailer there quickly and accurately. Impressive stuff.

I'm going to assume that is a dog trailer, the Truck is 1 unit with an attached box and then the dolly attached to another trailer so it would almost be like reversing a D-double.
@cotton.EJ.4 жыл бұрын
Almost correct yes, there's no dolly here but it's called an wagon. It's all one unit but the same principle as dolly + trailer.
@victorhodgson87674 жыл бұрын
A camera mounted at the rear of the truck, looking at the front wheels of the trailer would help I think , ( used to reverse four wheel trailers, got to be aware of what the front wheels of the trailer are doing, with using only wing mirrors , you become "blind " for a short time, by that time the front bogey probably moved from the track you wanted) .
@johnnyhun1 Жыл бұрын
nah, it doesn’t help at all. You see only false image in the camera that the dolly is always straight, I know, my truck has camera but that only helps when coupling, while reversing you only look at the mirrors, but at night you just have to feel it cuz you see nothing in the mirrors :D
@Killer99215 Жыл бұрын
No camera. Use mirrors to see the position of the side wall of the drawbar trailer, the front wall, and the light marker on the far end of the trailer. When you can't see the light marker, but you want the trailer to go that way, be it right or left side in your mirror. Turn your steering wheel towards that problem. If you want the trailer to go left, turn left. To make it go right, turn right. To keep the trailer steady and not wander off, do minor adjustments, and drive forwards if you get a too big of a turn going - Because that will escalate. And watch for the front wall and side wall. When they cover the same % of the mirror from your perspective, thats when you know you have turned enough to left/right. When the code is broken, on how to do it. It's Just as easy, if not easier than reversing a semi. (which is just like reversing a car-trailer for... cars)

what near-miss he wasent event close!, he still had 0,5 meters to the trailer, maybe i should record some of the thight spots i get into with my drawbar trailer, then we can talk about near-miss' some of the narrow spots, im close to 0,05 meters, also known as 5 cm, from last axel to fence, building or other obstacle i have to get around. and when things get thight, there is only one thing to do, SLOW DOWN and go out and check if you will clear the obstacle, and its better to go out and check 5 times to many, than 1 time to little.
@vilenius187 Жыл бұрын
There was no risk of tail-strike, drawbar trailers don't act that way. When turning, the tractor tail swing will pull the drawbar in a way so the trailer will keep on going straight round the corner. This trailer has no tail swing since the axles are in all the way to the back - with a conventional nordic drawbar trailer would risk a blind side tail swing strike if you do wide turns with them.

That used to be the way for like 50 or 60 years ago, yes. But it takes to much time and it does not really help you.Actually you have more things to look after and most of the time you need a second man to guide you and keep an eye on the A frame. The way he did it here, he only have to care about what is behind him, If you take it on the front, you have to keep an eye on the trailer, which is to close to you to see the moves and you have to keep an eye on the back of your own truck which is swapping in different directions. People from circus and fairy park people still tend do do it this way, but they have guides most of the time and don't have to run against the clock.

"Easier" is subjevtive. Lowering the 2nd axle will make the trailer turn less, because the two stiff axles are dragging. Because of this, the trailer will not run away (as in turning too much to recover / "jackknife") as easily. On the other hand, you need more movement from the truck to turn the trailer. I personally prefer reversing with the lift axle lifted if the weight on the trailer allows me to.
