The new Bosch Fuel Pump assembly is in, so let's install it on the Volvo S60 and see if our diagnosis was correct!
Procedure is a bit tricky, but with a bit of creativity we get it done right.
Verification of the ECM 2900 / P0089 code repair included, of course :)

As others have mentioned... When I saw you start to pull the old sending unit out, I thought, "Uh, he needs to have tied on some kind of string and pulled it through so he can *_then_* use the string to pull back the harness/hose of the replacement." Yep... Such is the way it goes. You'll know for the next time, for sure.

I had to do this same job on a Nissan Rogue a few weeks ago. Very similar setup. The service info for that thing said to tie a string to the wire and tube at the secondary sensor before yanking out the main fuel pump hanger so you could use the string to pull the tube and wire for the new one down and over to the second sensor. Glad I read the service info before I just started yanking stuff. No one in my area even stocks ni-copp brake line. It's special order ;-)

Almost every European car you work on, Ivan, you describe as being too 'fancy'. And yet, you almost always seem to find something to admire about them too, as in the dual pump layout on the Volvo being able to pump fuel from one tank to another as being 'awesome'. @@douglasjreynolds not really, you just need to spend 90 USD and order Volvo Vida and DICE from China. The interface is from the same factory and looks the same as the one Volvo sell to their dealers for mere 750 USD. Software is a pirated copy and works only offline, the original is something like 3000 USD / yr. All manuals, all information, one of the best two directional scan tools and absolutely detailed instructions for each fault code, when it sets, what is wrong, where the faulty component is and how you change it. No other universal tool comes nowhere near VIDA. Witi it you are the Official Volvo repair shop, minus the SW upgrades. See yourself: kzbin.info/www/bejne/e4msomWJqLVootE So it is not hard, the US general purpose tools are just not enough. With the right tools, it is easy to diagnose and repair. About the bonus part: Yes there are two fuel level sensors, computer calculates how much there is fuel left from two sensors and turns the fuel gauge needle to the right position. I once ran out of fuel with my V70, when the fuel gauge was showing half tank. One of the sensors was stuck to full and I ran both tanks totally empty, because the gauge was showing 1/2 tank, but in reality both tank sides were empty. The needle was not stuck, it just moved a half speed down from full and I did not realize that. So even with a new car - reset you tripmeter when topping up the tank. Fuel level sender froze in freezing weather due a few drops of water in the gas i filled from an underground tank.

Lots of sedans have those "Saddle" fuel tanks. The fuel level sending unit is typical on one side and the fuel pump module is on the other. Easy to get to, no removing the tank. Just have to be careful and always have some of those "pigmatts" on hand to catch any spillage. I am amazed that these fuel pumps, which wear out way too soon, are still used by vehicle manufacturers. You'd think they would improve them to go a good 150,000 miles or more but they don't. I'm almost sure that just the fuel pump itself is sold separately which can save on cost quite a bunch depending on the labor charge to swap out the old one. Stay away from Airtex fuel pumps. Delphi is good.

A big fat guess on the two pumps and all the complications. Low fuel tank and high speed cornering might cause fuel starvation. This system might be to mitigate that possibility.

@jannepo
@jannepo 3 жыл бұрын
S60, V70 etc have a "Saddle tank", because AWD models have a rear driveshaft running through the lower part of the tank. Without the transfer pump, you would only get a half tank gas out from the tank (V70). Simpler solution would have been putting a hose at the bottom of the tank from one side to other, BUT if that hose would be damaged in a accident, it would leak out the whole tank of gas and cause a serious fire hazard at the accident site. Like you burning in your car. When you use electric pumps for transfer and and delivery, you can stop the pumps when accident happens and all the hoses outside the plastic fuel tank are not pressurised and do not spew out gas if ripper or damaged. The plastic tank has been designed to sustain a lot of damage before puncturing.

I used to work at a Volvo Dealership. I remenber the first time I did the same mistake, partly filling the tank and just pulling out the transfer-hose.... That day I learned to plan ahead, and tie a string to it so it wouldn't take the rest of the day (or stink out the car with gas). Actually we also had a pneumatic tank-draining pump. But that's the best way to learn, f*ck up once, and make the experienced call next time. Good video Ivan.

So I just did this job on an xc90. Very similar setup, the range was not as bad as yours of high duty cycle. On this one the duty cycle was only at 43 percent at idle and still set the code. After a new pump it went down to 35 percent. So it only takes a slightly worn pump to give that code.

Another replacement pump was ordered an upon replacement for the second time I noticed the feed tube for the fuel bucket had gotten knocked off on the first installation. Pretty sure that secondary pump is just a transfer pump. Since these are 4 wd, the tank has a channel through it to accommodate the rear drive axle. The pump will move the fuel from the opposite side of the tank to the pump side. So i don’t think it has anything to do with the pressure , unless you were about out of fuel.

May faulty fuel pump cause DTC codes "fuel pressure signal missing" and "fuel pressure signal too high"? That's what I get, I haven't checked with auxilary pressure gauge, but once the engine is running it reads correct pressure values(nominal pressure equals actual pressure). The car has to be started 7 or 8 times before the fuel pump starts at temperatures 25-45 C, if it's hotter or colder- no problem.

Ford flex has saddle tanks . Our 09 runs out of fuel with just under 1/4 gauge reading. 85 DTE on display. 4 tanks of no n ethanol .made it better for a couple of months. Assume level sensor corrosion.

I see petrol pumps wear out quickly but diesel pumps normally will last the life of the car. Petrol is not a kind substance for moving parts.

It's a lift pump
@ScottPuopolo
@ScottPuopolo 3 жыл бұрын
Is that because of the two 'lobes' of the fuel tank? Like a transfer pump?
@2secondslater
@2secondslater 3 жыл бұрын
@@ScottPuopolo yeh, a lot of cars have a fuel tank that goes over the transmission tunnel, the left and right sides of the tank are not really connected and a lift pump is used to transfer fuel from the lazy side to the work side.

@@andrewwmacfadyen6958 yep, there are even a few vehicles that have a saddle fuel tank that have no 4WD or AWD models. Just a thing that decreases manufacturing costs

@@2secondslater Volvos are like that, all models have a saddle tank, not just the AWD models. You need only one tank / pump setup / spare part.

Aftermarket wiring diagrams, like parts, vary widely in quality. That's why I prefer to use OE wiring diagrams over the aftermarket. OE diagrams aren't always perfect, but 99% of the time they're accurate. Would a current ramp test (with the scope) on the pump have revealed any valuable information on the failed pump in this case?
