The mesh isn’t to keep debris out, that’s the air filters job. It’s there to create a laminar flow over the air sensor so it gets an accurate reading and is unaffected by turbulence. There are no end of numpties online who cut this mesh out because they don’t know what it does; Bosch knows what it’s doing. Just spray some MAF cleaner over it while it’s disassembled.

Haha! Comedy central today...😜 You entertain AND educate. Agree with other posters on using MAF sensor cleaner and have used it too to good effect. Even without an error code, a clean sensor can help fuel economy.

It's removed every time someone changes the air filter. Just way easier to pull out the air filter rather than struggle. Also they are rarely faulty faulty. Just slightly faulty. MAF cleaner is the first try and don't start the car disconnected or you may introduce a engine code. Fair play for giving it a go.

For anyone watching this who has a slightly earlier D5 (mine is a 2007 d5), I had a slowly getting worse issue. Symptoms were.... Under load the car had 'limp home' symptoms without any engine fault codes or warnings. Total power loss SOMETIMES. Read the car with Vida and nothing unusual. I changed the electronic turbo wastegate actuator, still had the issue. Changed the throttle body, still the same issue. Changed the MAF, fixed. If you have to do the same, best then go into the ETM and recalibrate whatever parts have been changed. Weird but sometimes the mafs can fail and NOT throw a code. Cleaning it didn't fix it.

To calibrate MAF, do i need Vida or it can be done with any computer?

Good one DL I use CRC MAF sensor cleaner for all intake sensors, every time I disconnect any electrics made a habit of using dielectric grease. xc60 D5 awd love the vids keep it up.

You should have brought some MAF cleaner and Sprayed it off before replacing it also loosen the circlip as much as you can as the bead on the MAF needs room to expand the connecting hose.

I wouldn't have thought the compressed air was the best idea ,MAF sensor cleaner would be the best thing to use

It's OK, it wasn't held close, just enough to remove dust and debris from the sensor:)

CRC MAF cleaner is great, used it on BMW. Works a treat. As for price I purchased a 2nd hand one for £60 on eBay for BMW so not too bad in my case, new prolly £200.

I had a mass air flow sensor go on my 2002 Volvo V70 2.4 Non turbo and the car wouldn't go above 40 Mph and it would do 60 Mph downhill it was stuttering a lot and it failed on the M25 I only just made it home it was running very rough Take care

MAF sensors should not be cleaned with any form of cleaner, electrical contact, or special MAF cleaner it can damage the hot wire inside, compressed air is best, but if it is failing in the end if will and needs to be replace.

Remove the top from the air box as you do when changing the air filter. It's far quicker and you don't even need to remove the MAF sensor from the air box.

Uh...Isn't that air box held in place by screws located on the inside underneath the filter ? I will go check my s80's filter and see. [probably should've checked again but I'm sure I had to remove like 4 screws last time]. Recently, I can't get my main plastic intake to snap back into the slot in my grill. Been suckin hot air here in Florida, not optimal. I'm a go fix that, right now.
