VOLVO PENTA 3.0GLS-J Oil and Filter Change

Ok, I have the gs model and I used the same pump as Felipe did. problem is. That does not get all the oil out. At best, he removed a little over a gallon. Same as me. So I purchased another pump where the hose goes into the dip stick shaft and supposedly the hose goes all the way to the oil pan. When I put mine in it goes maybe 10 inches and wont go any further and by no means does it go to the oil pan. So, correct me if I'm wrong but the engine is suppose to have anywhere from 4 to 5 gallons. Sucking out only a little over a gallon does not constitute a oil change. So, How do I get to the oil pan and do it the right way.

@@roberteckstrom1113 4 qts=1gallon. So sucking out just a bit over 1 gallon would leave a pretty inconsequential amount of old oil to be diluted by the fresh oil. Adding a new oil filter at the same time would eliminate any concern I would have about such small residue.

Hey Felipe, I have 2001 3.0GS, it’s time to change the oil in my engine. I bought quicksilver 25w40, is it okay to use that oil or should I go with 10w40? I asked some questions at a dealer and everyone told me that the 25w40 is fine, but I want to be 100% sure of what I’m going to use.

It’s depends on the temperature. I am in Michigan so the water temperature gets really cold up here. That’s why I go with the 10 W40 25W 40 should be good for warmer temperatures.

cant get mine to idle, rebuilt the carb but still same issue, any toughts? idles after a while ca 30 min.

park plug maybe , it is hard to tell, also check you gas filter and the quality of the gasoline in your tank.

I have a 2005 stingray with the volvo 3.0 GL. Can I use the same oil and filter you used? The yellow sticker on my engine says SAE 30 W

I believe it would be safe to use the same oil, i have been using it for years.

@@felipezafani I was under the impression there is no SAE30 motor oil any more. Volvo Penta parts website says to use a 10w 40 full synthetic oil now in my 1997 3.0L Volvo Penta GS . Am I wrong here.

​​​@@roberteckstrom1113I can find and use SAE 30 for my commercial mowers. It is harder to find but it is still out there.

Thank you for your observation, yes I am running with no water and it is perfectly fine if you do it for short time, before it over heat.

@@felipezafani hi i have this identical setup. Just plug in your garden hose to the blue cap you see on top of the motor. No need to run it on ear muffs. You will need a new impeller after running it this long dry. The friction killed it completely. Your impeller part number will be 18-3276-1. I get 3 years out of the sierra ones and 5 or more out of volvo oem. Appart from a tiny power steering leak, we've had no problems with this engine.
