I appreciate the detail expressed in explaining the tools by part number and the process in using each tool. Every step is narrated to include torques and contact measurements. I would feel most comfortable having my repair work done at this shop, or even pay for a core exchange for a Rebuilt unit.

Ted what is the part # for the manual you are using? After ordering about $2k worth of tools i realize I still need more tools. But I'm too far in now. I would have been better to just get a reman from Jasper.

Hey Ted, I need to remove my lower drive to have a shop straighten out the skeg. It’s bent from the previous owner. I’ve never taken a drive apart before. It’s a Volvo Penta DPS on a 2002 Bryant with F9 props. Could you direct me on how to disconnect the lower section from the rest of the outdrive on the boat so I can take it to a shop?
@jaked42852 жыл бұрын
In other words.. how do I get what’s in this video off the rest of the outdrive?
@tedsmarinerepair89562 жыл бұрын
Drain the gear lube. Tilt the drive fully up and you will see 2 bolts that thread through the lower unit up into the upper housing.Remove those. Then there are 4 nuts to remove - two on each side. Remove those and the lower unit can be removed.

@@tedsmarinerepair8956 sounds much more straightforward than I was expecting it to be. Is there any C clips or anything weird that I need to try to disconnect to get the vertical shaft unhooked from the upper section?
@tedsmarinerepair89562 жыл бұрын
@jaked4285 no, there is a short intermediate shaft that connects the lower to the upper shaft. I would replace that with the o'rings

I want to inquire about consultation re a DPS-B ox drive that is making more clicking noise than the other port drive when in forward at all rpm's and also a different click at about 1/2 second intervals. powers up and performs to spec as to speed of boat max with both drives going; 2013 model; 182 hours; volvo D3 engines; only work done is gear lube changes, new shift cables, and shift seals at outdrive rear; bellows replacement and lube of spline shaft to motor. Last gear lube change a couple weeks ago showed small amount of metal on drain plug magnet and other quiet drive had no metal on plug magnet. Let me know how to engage a consultation if that is available. Considering just replacing drive vs repair and if exchanges are available. Thanks, Garth Scott

Any info on the raw water path through these? I've tried everthing else to get water flow and cannot . I suspect something in the lower unit.

does 3855921 tool slide over the bearing on the shaft, or does the bearing have to come off?
@tedsmarinerepair89562 жыл бұрын
It fits over the bearing to pull the shaft out of the gear and fh e n you press the bearing off in a press with that tool as shown in the manual
@qualitymarine27362 жыл бұрын
@@tedsmarinerepair8956 thank you for that reply, I must have a different year tool, the nut is smaller on the dps, more like 7/8 vs 1 1/8 like the sx drives

Hi Ted, I am independent marine shop in Thailand and following every video you have on KZbin (best ever). I like to know where can I buy all these tool for Volvo Penta?
For DPS-B ox, to just replace the shaft oil seals, can one buy just the shaft separation puller, remove the two shafts, replace the seals, and put back together with original shims & leave all bearings in place. Motor has only 200 hours, but is 11 years old.
@tedsmarinerepair89569 ай бұрын
You can do it that way. However, I always replace the shaft bearings as well as they may be damaged from water intrusion. And that is the proper method we teach in Cert courses.
