The hidden key is usually for the glovebox. But, some manufacturers made the doors mechanically unlockable because they already made a key that does that, and thought "why not". But, you can lock it that way if you forgot how to press a button.
@GGoffroad23 жыл бұрын
Per Volvos manual: Locking It is also possible to lock the car with the remote control key's detachable key blade e.g. in the event of a loss of power or if the key's battery has become discharged. The left-hand front door can be locked with its lock cylinder and the detachable key blade. Other doors have no lock cylinders and instead have a lock switch on the end of each door which must be depressed using the key blade - they are then mechanically locked/blocked to prevent them being opened from outside. The doors can still be opened from the inside.

Trying to figure out whenever a time in my life has come or may come where i need to completely lock myself out of my car. I'm coming up with nothing. (Edit: before you copy/paste volvos user manual, please read) This comment is solely a reference to this guy's video and his assertion on how to use this lock/key, (that you insert the key, close the door and it will not reopen from the outside) which is apparently wrong, so it has nothing to do with Volvo themselves. To address the actual use, according to volvo, that this is a replacement for the manual door locks, I don't care, that's not what was stated in the video and thus not what this comment addresses. If I cared what the actual purpose of this was, I would've looked it up myself. So if you feel like telling me that, just go ahead and stop now, I didn't care when the first 20+ people tried to deride me about it, and I won't care about your copy/paste comment either. Now for those who took personal offense to my OPINION that this replacement to manual door locks is a step backwards in engineering, please take special note it's called an opinion. You don't have to agree with it, but feel free to form your own opinion about it. Telling me this mechanism is "cool" won't change my opinion. Not when I own 7 vehicles and can manually lock every door from the comfort of my driver's seat, with the exception of my full size conversion van for obvious size reasons. If you think it's more convenient to walk around the entire car and manually lock every door with a key you've gotta break out of your fob all just so you don't have to look at a lock pin/toggle protruding out of your door card for beauty reasons, then God speed, you do you. I prefer functionality over looks however, thus why my opinion is that this is not a practical replacement for what has worked for the better part of a century from a convenience stand point. So unless you're from Volvo and wish to explain how this mechanism is a better replacement than the door locks that already exist in my vehicles, move along.

I think it’s more like a display feature. If a car is being displayed in like a mall and they need to keep people out they would probably use that
@iamthecheese27373 жыл бұрын
@@tyleranderson3178 and when you're done displaying it, how exactly are you going to reopen it if you're completely locked out? From a financial standpoint of a company looking at it's bottom line, wouldn't it be far more cost effective to outfit only a handful of cars with an extra mechanism for complete lockout rather than every car on the line? And surely you could achieve keeping people out of your display car with a much simpler means, like the cars actual locks? They're just as secure as this feature. Either way, busting the window and reaching in for the handle will open the car up.
@iamthecheese27373 жыл бұрын
@R L that would actually make some sense, but you could just lock your doors while you're in it. If they're going to break your windows and reach in to unlock it then they'll just open the handle from the inside while they're reaching in too. Does the car not have a physical lock/unlock mechanism on the inside of the door or door handle? If not I think legally they need a way to lock the car while you’re in it and the battery is dead. To deter theft cars no longer have the knobs sticking out of the door that you can push or pull up to lock/unlock the doors, and if they also don’t have a lock mechanism on the door handle the only thing they could do is let you slide the key into the door to lock all the doors. Also the key only works on the driver door so the rest would remain locked as well.

@@Szpagin remote locking? Like a TV remote?
@TYPICALTRYHARD_3 жыл бұрын
So guys I've found the answer for those wondering the mechanical locking is ment for power failure and can be done to every door my Volkswagen has this along with Audi models and it's really meant if your locks break which is very common acurence with those locks but it is meant for if the specific lock is broken but it doesn't permanently lock you out it just if you lock your doors normally

The car detects the key and won't lock untill specified. Most (well all examples I know of) keyless systems have this included key to open if the key's battery is dead. Also the key has an NFC chip that allows the car to read it at proximity (often on the start engine button) to be able to switch on the car for conditions like if the battery is dead also.

In Finland we use that keyhole which was shown last for forcing lock on at winters. That’s because 9/10 times atleast some door don’t wanna be closed and opens constantiously when driving. In that use case it’s only needed to wiggle that little key in that hole and you can feel when the lock is pushed to different position.
