►Replacing the Serpentine Belt and & Tensioner on a P2 chassis Volvo is an easy job to complete requiring about an hour of your time and a little bit of patience. Jason shows you how to replace your worn out serpentine belt, which can be identified by either cracking belt ribs or the bearing on the serpentine belt tensioner is worn out and noisy. Both can harm other parts on your Volvo if failure were to occur.

About to do this job on my buddy's 2002 V70 Cross Country. It has 105,000 miles and is running with the original drive belt and tensioner. That's what the Volvo dealer that has done all of its servicing since new told me. I'm surprised that neither the belt nor the tensioner have failed yet.

Thanks tons for these, and all the FCP videos. On this job, however, my Torx 60 is too long to get into place. It's made for a 3/8", but that, plus the wrench is too long. I think I need to find one perhaps as yours, that fits into a socket.

Good video. Clear, plain and detailed. My tensioner wobbles as the belt goes round. But it does it rhythmically, not randomly. If you get what I mean. Hold your hand "karate chop style" in line with the front of the car, then kinda move your fingers left like you're tapping something. At idle my tensioner does this about every second. Umm, it's not meant to is it?!

You'll want to check the belt for signs of cracking at 75k mile intervals. Any noise from the tensioner is usually an indication that the bearing is worn.

Ok, so, I replaced the tensioner and tried to install a new belt per the instructions in the video. I used a T-60 wrench to pivot the tensioner clockwise as far as it would go. I spent the next hour trying to slip the belt onto the P/S pump, no luck. The problem was getting the belt to slide across the grooves in the pully (impossible), simply not enough clearance. It occurred to me that maybe that's why there are no, -0-, grooves on the tensioner pully. I wrapped the belt around everything except the tensioner pully, pivoted the tensioner as far as possible, and 5 minutes later, with a bit of effort, the belt was ON!!!!!

Start around the bottom pulley on right, up and around the alternator, then down to the crankshaft bottom left, up and around the tensioner, and lastly around the power steering pump as you flex the tensioner with the T60.

Cool video. I am about to replace my serpentine belt and tensioner assembly. I am getting a faint sound that area but someone told me it was the alternator bearings. It charges fine and the diodes are good. The xc90 t5 has 94k so I think it is more likely the tensioner. Would that be the more likely cause of the whining sound?
@fcpeuro
@fcpeuro 4 жыл бұрын
Hi, yes that sound is likely the tensioner, specifically the idler pulley bearing on the tensioner starting to fail. Another thing to note, a whining sound in gear could also mean your transmission fluid is low. -Jacob
@bluebox212
@bluebox212 4 жыл бұрын
Transmission fluid good to go. I bought one of those mechanical stethoscopes and listened around the the tensioner and alternator. They both were loud of course and not knowing what is the standard loud for each I wasn't sure which it was. So that is when a friend told me he though it was the alternator. In either case I will know later today when I replace the serpentine belt and tensioner assembly. While I am at it and give the alternator wheel a few turns is there anything I should pay particular attention to which could indicate trouble. Just thinking out of the box here but it could be both the tensioner and the altetnator bearings. I buy some replacement bearings for the altetnator last week. The alternator is (Bosch)Volvo 30667787 and the replacement bearings I was told to get are:SKF6303-2RS1 and SKF6203-2RSH. I may not need the bearings upon inspection but are they the ones I will need later at some point? Thanks and let me say that I hope my replacement later today goes as smoothly as I have envisioned after studying your video.

I just replaced the tensioner on my 2002 S60. It was quiet for a minute or two, then the squeal came back. The old tensioner was definitely the source of the noise before, so it appears that the new FCP tensioner I installed is making the same noise. Thoughts on what may be causing this? The old tensioner had a grooved pulley to match the grooves in the belt, the one you sell is flat...could that be causing the noise?
@fcpeuro
@fcpeuro 5 жыл бұрын
Old pulley most likely had wear marks from the belt, not grooves. Before condemning the tensioner pulley, we recommend getting a stethoscope to diagnose further. If it is the tensioner, its covered under our lifetime warranty.

Hi, Greg. It's possible some water got in that area. Maybe you can wait for the water to fully dry out and see if the noise goes away. If it goes away, it shouldn't be a problem! If you still hear the noise even after a few days, you might have to replace your belt tensioner.

Marco Deluca I ended up just unbolting oem tensioner and new tensioner just took regular socket to adjust tension.

If you can share your ratchet and socket size would be greatly appreciated or where can I buy 3/8 drive t60 ratchet because I could only find 1/2 and that makes it so longer

I have a 2004 XC 90 T6 2.9 L and just to let y’all know you can’t just slip the belt on you have to take the crankshaft/harmonic balancer plate off in order to put the belt on and the T 55 Works Way better than a T 60

90% sure the belt is inside out...as in the smooth side is in contat with the pulleys instead of the serrated side....could be wrong though...

The T60 is really absurd and stupid. My Volvo had the standard 14mm but now the new one came with the star. Most annoying thing.

"Go ahead and finish installing the belt". The hardest part of the entire process. Just make sure you use OEM parts - not NAPA, AutoZone, etc.
