Small warning: if you do this job and the ANTI-SKID light is flashing when taking a turn, the sensor was not set properly, see below. Also, the sensor is different for STC and DSTC cars. At 2:02 note how at about 7am on the yellow sensor strip, there is a small window: you can see there is a yellow band inside that window. If placing back the sensor, you HAVE to have that yellow color inside that window just like in the video, or the sensor will not work. Don't skip on this important step. Even the new sensors with the locking screw may not have the yellow window aligned. This is exactly the same thing as when you buy a new sensor which has a small locking screw (the one Jason says don't forget to remove it): the sensor has a rotating part inside and that part must be aligned with the yellow color inside the window when installing the sensor. Just turn the sensor both ways 2-3 turns until you see yellow inside the window (align it properly to see it fully). The center steering wheel bolt is a stretch type and must be replaced with a new one and has some red loctite on it. Torque for a new one is 30 Nm plus and additional 30 degrees. Here's a picture with the tabs to remove tha airbag, but note that some years had these tabs replaced with screws volvoforums.com/forum/attachments/volvo-s60-v60-10/24353d1501377816-steering-wheel-removal-%2Ahelp%2A-mine135.jpg See my channel for a few Volvo repair videos while there.

You have saved me some cash and worry. I had removed the steering wheel and after placing it back, steering controls didn't work. Seeing your insight here, I observed that the little window around the clock spring showed blue instead of yellow. Gave it a few turns till yellow showed and voila! All steering wheel functions are back. Thanks a million

Thank you! I followed all your instructions and replaced the SAS, the anti-skid demons in my 08 XC90 are finally gone! I also replaced the yaw rate sensor in the floorboard, as it was damaged by a leaking sunroof drain. I didnt even need to take it to the dealer for software updates/calibration, all modules are communicating and I finally have my AWD/stability control back. I live in the northeast so Im very relieved to get this done before january. 10/10 instructional video!

Incredibly useful video. The airbag removal step is rather difficult since it isn't totally clear what you're poking for. My 2007 XC90 V8 has a similar steering wheel to this vid but had 3 airbag connectors which caught me off guard. The extra grey one was a bit more finicky to remove given the angle but it all worked out. Appreciate this video!

Before getting at the SAS or YAW sensors, make sure your steering wheel is perfectly centered when you drive down the highway. Really move back in your seat and look at the steering branches to stay really horizontal on both side. If it's slightly turned to either side while going in a straight line, the software of the DSTC system will have information from wheels you are driving straight while the steering is telling it you are turning: this results in software throwing an error and the Anti-Skid message. When a garage is doing all wheels geometry (alignment) they must take care to have the steering perfectly centered (if they know what they are doing). All 4 wheels must be properly aligned. Dragging brakes or deflated tire (including rear ones) can also cause the steering to stay a little turned. Once you correct the alignment and get the steering correctly centered, try first re-calibrating the DSTC, see if the error goes away.

Damn, mine isn't perfectly straight. Very close but not perfect. It's been like this for at least 100000kms though, and the error message started appearing once in a while and more and more frequently about a year / 20000kms ago. Do you think I'll need more than just changing the SAS ?

Oh that's interesting. I just came back from a volvo service and in the list of things to do I have the Track rod end and wheel alignment but also the SAS to be replaced (which is super pricy). I'm trying to get to the bottom of the issue (had bad experiences in the past in car services). So if I'm understanding it right - could the error message go away after doing the track rods and wheel alignment? Thx!

Great thanks for sharing! Got an offer from an authorized Volvo workshop worth ~$1500 of parts & job. Bought a new original angle sensor with the same part number for $500 and replaced it myself. Took me about an hour of very careful job in easy pace. Saved me $1000 👍👍👍 You'll need to drive a short "driving cycle" distance or two for the computer to "forget" the old fault in the system. No calibration was required in my case, although I will hook up a DiCE and take a look at Vida later to make sure all is fine and to delete the old fault codes when I have time for this.

Don’t get slid on the newer models removing the airbag! They have the holes … AND the tabs … but you can fiddle with them for years & the airbag will NEVER come out! I’m working on a ’07 V70 wagon - there are 2 T27 Torx SCREWS at the 3 & 9 o’clock position with the wheels straight ahead. Turn steering wheel 90 degrees in either direction and it will be on top, angled towards the cluster. They’re deep in there, so a regular Torx socket might not reach. Use a Torx key and a 8mm box end wrench for leverage - they’ll come loose with a CRACK! Fairly tight. You’ll see the airbag assembly coming towards you as you unscrew each one. The screws are captured so they won’t fall out when you turn the wheel 180 degrees opposite to remove the 2nd screw. 👍

Contrary to these instructions, my 2007 XC70 has the four spoke steering wheel and the airbag is held in with two Torx screws accessed through tiny holes on either side of the wheel. The column covers do not need to be removed to access them. Also, be careful about using electric drivers when loosening and tightening battery terminal clamps. One could easily break the clamping bolt as I did. Good thing I was able to take the one off of my 2002 XC70!

My 2008 XC90 has a slight vibration or shudder in the steering wheel when turning at lower speeds (20mph) or rolling down the street and hitting a bump. Is this an indication of needing this Angle Sensor? If not, any other ideas? The motor mounts are good, the tires are new and balanced, the spark plugs are replaced (in case you were thinking motor missing). So frustrating to have this vibration or shudder in the steering wheel. Thanks.

I wonder if this might be what I need. I have what appears to be a known issue for Volvo, but I have yet to get a definitive answer on. I will have a message that my anti-skid needs serviced. I drive it, turn the car off, and next time I turn it on, it will say anti-skid temporarily disabled (exact message may be a little different, I'm going from memory). MOST of the time, if I drive it out of my driveway and turn down the road in front of my house it will go off. In cold temps, it's much more rare to see this, and in very cold temps I may never see it at all. As spring turns into summer, I see it every single time I start the car on a hot day, especially if it's been sitting in a hot parking lot. I've heard some say it's the SAS like in this video, and some say it's a yaw control, but never gotten a straight answer. Has anyone at FCP Euro seen this temperature influenced message and know for certain what this is? If so, perhaps that's another video idea too. By the way, love the parts. If I need something for my Volvo, FCP Euro is the first place I go.

I had to replace heater core on my 02 v70 i pulled the brake switch and steering knuckle loose and out so id have more room to slide core out. May have turned steering wheel to far one way or the other while i was cussing halfway upside down and twisted fighting with the core. After i curssed every thing under the sun fighting with core hose clips and got it all back together my cruse control and horn dosent work could i have over turned the clock spring and broke. Other than that i have no problems with driving or check engine light

I’ve watched multiple videos for this problem but I can’t even get the air bag to release. I ran a flat tip screwdriver in the holes but the air bag doesn’t budge. It’s a 2006 XC90 with 2.5 turbo if that makes a difference.

Some models had actually those release clamps replaced with regular screws (phillips or torx, can't remember well). Look with a small mirror and a flash light

SAS-000E - should be similar for the XC90 however the XC90 will have DSTC and will require a calibration afterwards.

Yes, calibration will be required. It usually cost an hour of labor at a Volvo dealer.

This a guaranteed to fail sensor as the internal contacts wear out from turning the steering wheel. Wish there was a repair kit available with upgraded contacts to install rather than spending hundreds on a new replacement only to see it fail again eventually

That's a good point, Michael. But, to be fair, some of these cars are over 15 years old now having this issue, so your chances of having the issue again after replacing it once are low, or won't happen for quite some time.

Would you happen to know how much it would cost to have a Volvo dealership calibrate the SAS?
@fcpeuro
@fcpeuro 6 жыл бұрын
It will vary between dealerships. I would estimate no more than 1 hours time and should cost around $120.

FCP Euro thank you for the fast response. I have one more question. Is this something that I can do by myself if I purchase the iCarsoft VOLII from your website?? I noticed it says that steering angle sensor calibration can be done with that device. Or is this something that only a Volvo dealership can do?
@fcpeuro
@fcpeuro 6 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately only a Volvo dealer will be able to calibrate the SAS.

I believe if you have Volvo VIDA you can re-calibrate the sensor. It's like $69 on amazon.

Yes,you can buy the Vida software on amazon but you will also need a suitable computer to load the software onto.In addition,you will also need the Dice interface tool to connect the computer to the ALDL diagnostic connector.
