Volvo Trucks - Episode 5: The fuel efficiency finish line

As the Fuel efficiency Face-off winds down, Fleet Equipment’s Jason Morgan and I-Torque super spec’er Joel Morrow make their way up through the hills of Fancy Gap, Virginia - behind the wheels of two very different Volvo trucks. While Jason enjoys relative ease behind the wheel of Joel’s Purple Haze, Joel finds himself making mental calculations on the fly to track his fuel efficiency numbers. The crowning of our Fuel Efficiency Face-off champion has arrived. Who will win?

Well, as everyone here knows I am an avid follower and comment regularly. Both mpg figures are excellent but could probably of been better. Neither truck were driven or ran in their sweet spot as much as they could of been. Again the importance of the initial handover to Jason should have improved those numbers. Use of the manual shift as needed either up or down the box, and the 3 stage engine brake tied to the cruise control on the downhill gradients. As mentioned in a previous post, both drivers should have ran the route in both trucks. It was the VNL that was on show and all its modern features regarding efficiency, safety, comfort, and earning potential. Is it 600 miles or 6000 on the VN? As a demo/test driver/trainer, I would have wanted to see the last maintenance sheet or annual DOT inspection on the VN as she had been standing for a while. She should have been put on a rolling road to get axle brake lock readings and had the speedometer calibrated on the same rolling road. In all fairness the VN was unfairly penalized here and in fairness to Joel he was none the wiser. If the VN was originally specced with 11R22.5s its parameters had changed with the more modern tire. The information was good and new drivers can learn from the challenge. Yes the trucks have come on in leaps and bounds, but remember the VN was top of her game when she went into service. Compared to White/GMC products the VN was a Cadillac of trucks. Long may this continue. The FM caught my eye. Is it a FM-E 6x2 rear lift dual wheel tag axle? Even an FMX-E?. Well done to everyone though the challenge was enjoyable. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿🇺🇸
