Automation like this is the direction vehicles need to take, IMO. Adding features that automatically do things when the human mind fails is way better than letting the machine do all the work in every situation (which is impossible). This automation doesn't encourage drivers to be less attentive, and it only activates when the human has failed.

I see a lot of concern for the drivers behind the truck, and I kind of get the worry; a non-attentive driver may very well end up rear-ending the semi, which would suck for the car driver. However, even with this awesome system, a semi (whether fully loaded or not) won't be stopping faster than a car with standard brakes would be able to. I guarantee that no matter how fast a truck stops in front of me, if I have a reasonable following distance (which is a no-brainer when I follow a semi, since I like to have time to dodge potholes and whatnot that the truck would obstruct), I'll be able to stop far faster than it, regardless of how great the truck's system is. It's just physics, my 1.5 ton car will stop faster than a 14 or 40 ton semi. If the driver isn't paying attention or is being a tailgaiting asshole, well then... the result would probably be the same regardless of if the truck had this system or not.

Hi question for you Volvo, first the system looks amazing, but will it work at higher speeds - that is to say it appears in the video it applies the brakes. But what if the truck is travelling faster (in reality I've seen some trucks doing 75-80 MPH). So in a case like that, will the truck (automatically) stop further in advance, or will the truck first automatically slow and THEN stop if needed?

Superb! What the 38 tonner at the traffic lights in Worcester didn't have (sorry didn't see you mate!) My car was rear-ended and catapulted straight across the crossroad in spite of a red traffic light but luckily the junction was clear. Fortunately the car's seat back collapsed owing to the phenomenal acceleration so I was not hurt. Unfortunately they don't make cars like that anymore. These days anyone in a bump like that would be claiming for whiplash but in the good old days people were more honest than they are now.

Seems like a great system and even if a percentage of these types of collisions are prevented it would be worth every penny to refit as many trucks and cars as possible. I do wonder how it would perform at higher highway speeds, with an unstable or unsecured loading shifting in response to the delta-V or in inclement weather (can't cheat physics) but any improvement will be welcome. Thanks Volvo!

Amazing! But what about higher speeds? How much does it take (in time and length) to go from 100km/h to 0km/h?
@volvotrucks
@volvotrucks 10 жыл бұрын
Depends on the road conditions and the speed of the vehicle in front of the truck. With regard to the safety margin it is set to a minimum in order to avoid false brake interventions. The system constantly monitors the situation ahead and it makes no difference if the car in front travels at constant speed or is braking. Of course not all accidents can be avoided, but in the situations where the accident cannot be avoided (for example if the car in front brakes very hard at a short distance or if the road surface has very low friction) the accident will be much less severe since CW-EB will mitigate the accident by reducing the impact speed. The reason for the truck coming to a complete stop at this specific demonstration was that it came below the activation speed. At higher speeds it will adjust the braking in order to match the speed of the vehicle ahead. It is also always possible for the driver to override the braking.
@Paradinha14
@Paradinha14 10 жыл бұрын
The technology used on Volvo's Trucks is amazing. This will really avoid many accidents or make them less fatal, I was just very curious because I had the impression that this braking system seemed stronger than the high speed sportive cars, but with a truck weight of over 40 tons...

My question is, if the driver hit the brakes at the same time the automatic system would kick in, would that be enough to stop the truck? Like.. I guess what I'm wondering is there anything special about the automatic system breaking vs a regular person breaking. Not in terms of like, reaction or whatever. But more in a sense of, do the breaks from the automate system work harder than if the driver was breaking? If that makes any sense. It blows my mind how quickly it can stop and I'd like to see a comparison of human stopping vs it.

@aeroscout113
@aeroscout113 10 жыл бұрын
Matt Strand What do you mean by engine retarder? The type of retarder Carnatics was talking about is the retarder fitted between engine and gearbox or on the transmision, and uses pressurised oil to limit the vehicles' speed. If I remember well, the EU law says that it must hold a fully loaded truck at 30km/h on a 7% downhill gradient for 6km. It is not the same thing as the exhaust brake, or exhaust retarder, where a valve creates exhaust back-pressure in order to rev down the engine.
