I drove 250,000 km per year for quite a while as a taxi driver in Sweden in these things. It did feel like a proper oil tanker sometimes but the cavernous boot and the seats made up for it. And being in Sweden, most people preferred getting into the back seat of these instead of a Merc or a Skoda or something. Volvos these days are something completely different, for better and worse.

V actually stands for "Vagn" which is Swedish for (station) wagon. The car is really a Ford Mondeo underneath, with many components having FoMoCo stamped on them. I have found the handling of the standard chassis pretty sharp compared to the standard P2 (and WAY sharper than the 850), thanks to Mondeo underpinnings. The UK only got diesels for this model, the rest of the world also got petrols, up to 6 cilinder engines which ironically were built in Bridgend. The lineup is extremely confusing, because it depends on model year which engine and gearbox combo you may have in the car. I have been driving a Swedish import V70 with 2 litre Mazda engine for over 6 years now. 145 hp without turbo makes the V70 feel very underpowered and noisy. It is however the most comfortable, roomy, ergonomical, reliable and safe car you can buy for the money. We've been to the UK with it, had to flip a lever inside the Xenon headlight assembly to switch from right to left hand traffic. And it runs on E85 which is very cheap in France. Never had such a good all purpose car. Sadly Volvo is no longer focusing on European markets, so we will have to make do with what Chinese customers want: bloated SUVs. 😢

I’am a proud owner of a v70 t6 awd ! And the 6 stands for 6 proper cylinders! Every time when i sit behind the I can’t surpress a smile! Especially when I press the gas pedal and hear the strait six roar! You realy miss that in the v90 ! Before the v70 I drove a s60 2.4t whit the lovely 5cilinder roar! Nice video Matt! 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻🆙

I’ve just sold my 2010 S80 D3 2 litre which is the same 5 cylinder diesel that’s just been de-stroked with a different crank. It was on 144000 miles of which I done 25000 and it never put a foot wrong, it never missed a beat. I only changed because of the introduction of the LEZ crap in Glasgow.

While you mention that there were indeed cars that perhaps scored better than some Volvos at the time and even today, a test is only indicative of the situation. Volvo themselves do far more testing than is required and have a long safety record, oftentimes beating other cars that may have scored better in that regard. For example, not a single person has died in a Volvo XC90 from any of the generations, whether the old one or the new one. Not a single person. At the same time, there are people touting Tesla Model X:s safety rating which in some cases was rated better, yet there have been fatal accidents in Model X:s around the world.

I owned two V70 D5’s and both purchased new to transport product samples all over southern France. A Manual and last one was the geartronic with 185 bhp engine. 300.000 in the manual and I did 385.000 kms in the geartronic. I Still got a good price for it! quite a few mechanical things to watch out for. The cambelt change at 160.000 is a big job and water pump is changed at same time. The cable you discovered in central storage box is in fact the optional apple iPod cable. I paid a couple of hundred euros for this option too. I work mostly from home now and use public transport to visit clients when possible. Volvo dealers won’t sell you an equivalent car these days. Even ten years ago they suddenly started selling lease cars and refused to part-exchange anything with more than 150.000. I was still a client when Volvo was sold to Geely. If you can find a reliable independent mechanic then This car is great and Volvos have a nice discrete image. Be warned about the cambelt costs as it can exceed a thousand…..

We have a 12 plate one of these on our fleet it's good but doesn't have the solid feel like the older 850s, lots of electrical issues aswell but the parts did say Ford on them.

Biggest motoring mistake I ever made was letting my 2014 S80 D5 go. It was a late bi turbo (215bhp)with all the toys. Traded it for a Polestar 2 which is also epic but I miss the noises and it’s squidgy comfy suspension and seats.

Estate cars make sense because they have the load space without the huge aerodynamic cost of an SUV. Furthermore the lower centre of gravity means superior handling without having to have a super firm ride.

I've had a D3 163 for the past 3.5 years. Great car, massive space, comfortable, nice 5 cylinder warble when you extend it, and over 60 mpg you take it easy on a long journey with a 70l tank. I wouldn't say it rolls any more than a 5 series either, but it's no sports car. I had to get one.

I've liked Volvo cars for a while. Gone are the days when you'd be stuck in a traffic snake headed by a 340DL being driven by a 'careful owner'. Those cars seemed to have a top speed of 40 everywhere so often had a photograph taken of them driving through little villages and towns when it wasn't rush hour. Although the lighter interior gives plenty of air to the cabin it can age badly if not looked after. Another top review Matt and thanks for sharing.

By the way, the font inside the car on the buttons and dials is Handel Gothic, the same font as what has been used in many Star Trek credits (at least in Voyager) Volvo Broad (officially called Volvo Novum) is used on their marketing and communications. It looks a lot like Handel Gothic but is different.

The car I regret selling the most was a 1998 V70XC, officially a 2.5T, though it was only 2435cc (back in the days companies could lie about engine size!) with allegedly 190hp - it was quick, an effortless motorway cruiser and handled predictably when pushed Only averaging 18mpg was rather painful though! The D5 must make more sense, though only came out with the P2 model (earlier diesels were somewhat low on power imo) Great review Matt, thanks for bringing back good memories!

Biggest engine in capacity in v70 III was 3.2 inline 6 petrol. But most powerful was 3.0 T6 inline 6 turbo petrol. With the 6 pot petrol the ride is so lovely.

Nice review! These 3rd generation V70 estates are extremely rare in Canada. I’ve been searching for a good example for the last couple of years. The XC 70 is common in comparison. All V70 models in North America came standard with the 3.2L inline 6.

A lot of these were used as taxis in Scandinavian countries, with mileages of 500.000+ or so. Very solid cars. V70 was really good alternative just because it was softer, higher and more comfortable. I never understood why people want sport car features on a family car. If you want an expensive, fast and very uncomfortable sportscar buy a Ferrari or Porsche. AMG's and M5's aside, I never understood how things like lowered suspension and huge wheels improve the family wagon. Are you going to track your family wagon or what? V90 is probably a good car, but somehow it lost the original Volvo "spirit". It's lower and just as "sporty" as its German rivals now. Even looks almost the same as Mercedes W213 wagon and new Audi A6 wagon... lost its personality.

I love my 06 xc70. I was in the market for a v70 but at the time there was none for sale in my area but there was the xc70 owned by an elderly person for a good price and I have not been disappointed yet. the only thing there was no cargo cover and wow those are hard to find for a good deal lol

I owned a 2007 v70 p2 “2.5T”. My favorite aesthetic by a long shot but unfortunately I crashed it(a hellcat heavily sideswiped me). It was fixable but my family situation didn’t allow it at the time so it was pick and pulled. But I was able to get a 2008 v70 p3 “3.2”. It’s very interesting owning both because I can see they are the essentially the same car, but also very different cars at the same time. also apparently the 3.2 p3 V70 wasn’t sold much in the US so it’s rare for me to see others while I see p2 and p1s around quite a bit. I’ve seen more 850s than p3s.(lore wise the p3 is the 880, if you know you know) From the front compared to the p2 the p3 definitely has a more “JDM” feeling too it and it doesn’t feel like there is as much trunk space but it feels a lot more reliable in sense than the P2 considering it’s a simple engine and transmission, fwd and when kept up seems like it’ll last forever, seems like a jack of all trades kinda wagon. The only issues I’ve ran into have been minor electrical issues and the sunroof leaking, but that happened on both my p2 and p3 so it’s late 2000s issues it seems. I really do miss my p2 and I wish I could have fixed it but I wouldn’t have a p3 so it’s neither here nor there but until my p3 is literally legally undrivable it’s gonna be daily driven.

My mate had one of these , we did lots of road trips to Scotland and the alps in it. The only car other than a Range Rover which was comfortable for 5 adults to travel in. We once did a trip to Scotland with 5 adults and 6 mountain bikes on/ in the Volvo.

We have a 2012 XC70 which we bought for towing, and with its 215hp D5 engine and the massive boot it’s an incredible long distance van lugging family tourer. Thankfully we missed the pop up Sat nav and have the newer dual screen humped dash from the XC60. Curiously it also got the V70 R-Design body kit and rear wing fitted which I’ve never seen on another example, likely was a bit racy for the usual XC70 customer! Great video and great car 👍

I’m running a P3 based XC60 with the 2.4 5pot diesel engine. LOVE, LOVE, LOVE it. Had a mk1 V70 years ago which was flawless. My current has just shy of 180,000 miles on it in just 10 years. You are welcome to review it if you would like? I’m not far from you and could make the car available when convenient. I just love a car that can have this much use and still have every feature still work.

Having owned a V70-1, 2 and 3 and now a V60: V70-1 has the best load space (square). V60 has the best rear seat leg room. Over all the 3 is the best all rounder. Good review!

Estates are better than SUVs and crossovers as they have the necessary height and width for load-lugging with the rear seats folded flat. I would've kept the estates in the Volvo line-up but looked at alternative fuels in addition to electric vehicles ie bio-diesel bio-LPG hydrogen E85 in addition to give a choice.

I own a 64 plate V70 D3 with the 2.0 5 cylinder diesel. Great car for mile munching & family holidays, getting around 46 mpg on a long run. The downsides are apparently a weak clutch on the manual versions & you have to be very careful when doing oil changes as they dont like being brimmed with oil, three quarters or just over is enough. Plus my car is only £30 a year VED but isn't ulez compliant, you need a 2015 model year for no fee entry.

a buddy of me and my brother bought a dirt cheap 850 2.0 10v for 4500 kr 500 ish gbp dog slow but in near perfect condition underneath and driving it felt like it was the safest place in the world to be at that time. So when my mother needed a new car we almost at the same time wrote v70, and we found a nice first gen 1999 2.4 petrol for 10000 kr 1200 ish gbp and it has been solid as a rock since, the steering rack has had to be changed due to a leak but other than that it has been running without any issues for 3 years, and lets just say mo mom treats her cars like she stole them :P

I owned a 2005 P2 S60 D5 163bhp geartronic (5 speed auto)for 3 years, 70k trouble free miles, I've replaced it with my Lexus IS 300h Hybrid which is a superb car but God l miss that 5 pot warble 😢

I've driven many miles in V70 hearses and S80 limousines. We are slowly retiring them all now and replacing them with Mustang Mach-Es. Shame, the Volvos were brilliant. Smooth, comfortable and spacious. And if you were running late they could get a proper shift on.

I’m sure you know of my love of Volvo estates Matt! They are definitely the last of the Old School Volvo estates, the V90 is lovely but it’s not really quite the same and the way all manufacturers are abandoning anything other than estates is absolutely ludicrous. The P3 is a handsome car and definitely lovely to drive in either S80 or this V70 - it’s always going to be an estate though. For me my P2 V70 is the pinnacle althought the P3 is a superb car and my guilty pleasure has always been a white XC70 with black/diamond cut 6 spoke wheels. Fantastic video as always!

10:50 I owned a 2004 V70 and now a 2008 S60, and the doorpanels stayed perfect, no splititng at all. The A-pillars on the other hand... on the S60 they are fabric covered and it has come loose at the edges. Not easy to fix.

As an old Volvo fan,I could quite easily live with that. The brushed aluminium is way more practical than piano black. Lots of XC70 suffer from auto. transmission failure and unfortunately really good cars become parts only. There is even one in my street that has not moved for a very long time, bet I know what’s wrong. Probably the 2WD ones not a problem.

Love volvos, had a P2 v70xc 6 cyl turbo, love it, now a xc60 for the wife...because I couldn't find a v60 wagon in my piece range ...it's sad to hear they are not selling wagons, should adapt better, like Subaru that keep selling and selling outbacks and crostrecks....I think it was a big mistake from Volvo to cut the 70 range that was a direct competition.

Are you absolutly sure about those powerfigures? D5 engines never gave 163 hp. A lot of other engines did, D3/D4 and 2,4 D:s all had that poweroutput sometimes during their existance. D5.s were stronger. Unless the UK market got a special variant I don´t know about. @@furiousdriving

I have an XC70 with the higher output D5 a few years later than this but nearly identical interior. Very comfortable and surprisingly economical for a car of the size. Love it, the pale interior is a calm place to be relative to the usual black and chrome. The lifted estate car seems to have better aerodynamics than the modern SUVs which cannot usually match the top speed of the XC70. I used a Qashqai 1.5DCI automatic for a while, the XC70 is more economical and faster. Also they are rated to tow more than you might expect. more than a Discovery Sport. I still like hooligan cars, but the Volvo was just too logical to ignore in this rural area. The RTI SATNAV is dated but mine still works and has a 2021 map disc. Saves using navigation on the phone for most of the journey. The USB socket in the centre console will accept thumbdrives loaded with music... truly a sad thing if Volvo will no longer offer estate cars in the UK. I have driven 145s, 245s 850s and 960s over the last 50ish years but never owned one until now.

I had one a 57plate with the ultra rare 3.2 inline 6 rare spec aswell being an SE sport very high spec unfortunately I also had a sizable crash in it and all the airbags failed which was surprising for a volvo considering the impact 50mph+ could be down to age as it was 15 years old at the time. Not that I needed the airbags as I was absolutely fine, not so much for the Kia driver who pulled out on me though. I Would say anyone considering buying a P3 look underneath at the chassis as they do suffer from rust especially behind the plastic side skirts along the sills. Steering racks are also a weak point. Funny enough though I now own a Mk4 Mondeo estate Titanium X so same platform as the v70 yet Ford did a far better Job it's more spacious and handles much better then the V70 did. I do miss the big volvo 3.2 inline 6 engine though yet it wasn't actually a volvo engine it was designed by volvo but made by Ford in their Welsh engine plant 😂

Have had a number of volvos over the years mostly d5s, last was an xc70 d5, 215bhp, loved it, and sadly miss it now. They have a habit of getting under your skin

I think the saloons have been stopped also..Only volvo SUV vehicles to be sold in the uk if my sources are to be believed.

I haven't had too much experience with Volvos but do love the V70 Estate. I was a passanger during a test drive. Love the sound of the D5 and thought it had real 'waft.' We went for the Passat Estate unfortunately. Great car too but soulless compared to the V70. Guess liking the noise and the floaty feel more of an enthusiast thing rather than the logical and capable but tedious Passat. 😆

If you can find one with the 4C active chassis it can handle quite well for such a big car. Very handy when you find yourself on a twisty bit of road! Unfortunately when it goes wrong it costs a fortune to fix. Each shock absorber costs around £800 to replace.

@@furiousdriving Yes unfortunately. The only place you can buy the shocks is Volvo so you have to pay main dealer prices. Thankfully you can get away with replacing only one because they can be calibrated to the car. Volvo recommend replacing both sides but it's not really necessary.

I have an XC70 ,in fact I think it was one of the last such cars imported into the UK in 2016 .I bought it at 18 months old and the previous owner had been Volvo itself .It has I think a 212 BHP engine ,its diesel ,ULEZ compliant ,I live 2 miles from the London boundary,and is much better than the XC90 I had before .The odd thing is that the car is clearly despecced as you dont get things like electric seats (though you get heated ones) .I agree its not the best at country roads ,but frankly its as good as most ,but where it is brilliant is on Motorways etc .I drove down to Spain last year and it was very good at that )When I went to Stockholm a few years a go they were basically the standard car for the Swedish police.A friend bought the V90 country or whatever its called but I have to say I found it a bit low and claustrophobic . Anyway I am keeping it for as long as possible .Downside is Volvo servicing costs .

Certainly very sad Volvo decided to withdraw estates from their UK lineup. I’ve just gone from a P3 XC70 to a P2 XC70 (both D5’s) . My P3 was a money pit, whereas my dad had owned the P2 from new and has been faultless

Had the D5, thd 185bhp engine left hot hatch drivers embarassed at light but absolutely drank petrol 10+ litres per 100km and I drive like a pensioner.

They copied those floating needle dials from Mercedes. But as you say, peak Volvo, lovely. I had that engine in a C70 & it has to be one of the most charismatic engines out there.

No more diesels they have announced, no more estate.... I think the chinese doesn't understand what a Volvo is any more, and it isn't just the UK market. But then again, most carmakers seems to be grasping for what to hang on to. I have an 2005 P2 V70 140hp petrol, and an 2014 XC90 2.4 D5 200hp 420nm. Both are similar in performance as the XC90 is so much heavier. You missed the thin hold in the center armrest that opens when you pinch the buttons on the sides! ;) The powersteering, if it is the same as my XC90 is speed dependant and I agree with you that it is unneccesary stiff at speed.

People really are trying to get you into automatics.😁 My uncle had a 2.4 5 pot petrol none turbo that was lovely and manual. I have only had 1 Volvo it was a v40 1.8GDi

What did you think to that auto box..? a friend had a S60 auto , drove lovely, strange thing to me was drive disconnected at the lights with brake on… Some of those had a Japanese auto box which should be good…

Typical slush box, smooth but slow to react and the manual override is slower than a ships telegraph to the engine room

Correct. Aisin box, basically Toyota. Slow but relatively bomb proof. Later models got a ford powershift which were very fragile in comparison.

@@AWMJoeyjoejoe I’m a fan of Japanese stuff , those p-shift things are robots, thing was Ford dealers apparently sold them as an automatic but customers , not realising they weren’t, burnt out the clutches , not brilliant..

Hi and that’s a shame has Volvo build excellent estates but unfortunately blame the SUV cross over drivers which are not good or as practical as an estate so I can understand Volvo pulling out of the Uk market o just wish of market would go back to saloons and estates which are great to drive unlike SUVs for me

Love your obvious enthusiasm for your review and for the V70 itself. Owned one of each generation and highly recommend them. Even though I currently have a V70R, the best one was a 2011 V70 twin-turbo D5 AWD (NOT the XC70) but don't tell anyone... 😉

That's the one I've got, though mine is a 2012 with the upgraded satnav system. Lovely car and very quick. I've surprised more than a few people pulling away from the lights!

I’ve just sold my Lexus ct200h and got a Volvo XC70 mk 3 SE Sport D5 AWD 2008 with 18000 miles from new. Not run in yet 😂😂😂
