Hey there! That is some really entertaining stuff you making mate! I was wasted after long working day,but couldn't resist to watch your video till the very end! Respect! Now,as for that Volvo. I live in Finland and always had that weak spot on these XC's. They look solid,very well put together and practical at the same time. Add that power,and the package becomes very tempting. About 6 years ago I had the chance to test drive one of these T6s for a weekend. I am a spirited driver and although on my 49s I prefer relaxing driving most of the time,I do like to play with the steering sometimes too. That car does not inspire drivers like me. Although on a moderately twisty roads it feels alright,sharp maneuvers are something the car hates to do. Any time I sharply move the steering,I could feel the heavy 6 cylinder sitting above the front axle. Massive torque steer on wet,numb steering, unbalanced suspension and gearbox. My previous car was E39 528 and I wanted to go for something different and better,but even the E39 was about 6 years older,it felt universe ahead of that Volvo in terms of handling,road feel and overall put together. Sadly. Good,bit just not good enough.

I would have thought that station wagons in the 60's and 70's would have proven that, tbh. But, people just love being taller than anyone else. They think that the height will make them safer by giving a better view, except that all the other SUVs block it even worse than cars block other cars' view. Even for slightly raised cars, there was the AMC Eagle in the 80s.

We have a 65-plate D4 2.4 XC70; she has just passed 188,000, and still going strong. There are no major issues other than the dreaded door locks, and a DPF refresh. It starts every time and is one of the most comfortable cars I have ever driven for long journeys. We won't be changing her until she dies.

Bought my D5 XC70 in 2010 and have done over 140k miles in it, apart from my Caterham that I've had for 28 years I've never owned another car as long. Other cars have come and gone since 2010 but the XC70 stays, even buying the modern equivalent V90CC didn't make me sell it. It may be a relatively rare car nationally, but up here in the Highlands of Scotland they're everywhere....one morning run into Inverness I spotted 10 on my 20 mile trip. There really is something about the car that feels like it's made to last, it's a quality bit of kit built and I love mine.

I've had two XC70s it's such a great car very practical - huge boot (bigger than Audi A6 Merc E-Class and even the new V90 XC). I'm loathed to part with it. Sure it 'leans' a bit but you can hustle it a bit over lumpy ground due to that long suspension travel. Good breaks and those seats are really comfortable on long journey's.

The XC70 is actually a nice height. I think it's probably just tall enough to get in and out easily. I have a skoda enyak. It's know where near as tall as a lot of SUV's. Probably barely any higher than the V70XC

Amazing car in any aspect. Old genuine swedish volvos with 5 cylinder engines are the top quality cars ever made (with old lexus). My company has 5 new volvos (XC90, XC90, v90, s90) and they have constant issues under warranty. Old ones are stronger, seats are more comfortable, materials are two classes better quality.

Love my V70 D5, even more so because its a manual with polestar tune, 230bhp and 50mpg, kids love the integrated dvd screens and the car also has integrated booster seats, Volvo knew what they were doing with family cars!

I've have a 21013 XC70 T6 with the PS Optimisation. Only had it about 2 months. Great big bus, just hit 73k miles. I'm running standard 17s. It has the dark brown leather seats and looks fantastic. Imports tend to be well specd as well, all the safety stuff, keyless entry / start etc. Other benefit of an import is ULEZ (Work in Glasgow city centre) and the tax is around £335 a year and not the £700+.

I bought this car when my youngest was still inside his mom’s womb and it will be his first car to drive. My xc70 is going in for its scheduled 150,000 mile servicing today in fact. Going for the moon marker of 250,000 miles. Regular servicing, regular unleaded and occasional fuel injector additive has been the key. 3 completely new sets of All Weather tires over its life so far. Granted some rubber, bushings and fittings have loosened or need to be completely redone. And the engine got pulled out and fuel pump and compressor were both changed at 85 k miles. But this car can be used anywhere anytime and will be used as my kid’s first car to drive now. The fuel tank is only 16 gallons and w average mpg of 21 mpg (us) it is not a great road trip automobile. But is has survived virtually unblemished despite 2 deceased deers attempting to dent it over its 16 years.

Just got a 2008 3.2 and just love it! It doesn’t blow you away, but does everything extremely well. It’s very comfortable and utilitarian, handles better than average, and is just powerful enough to be satisfying to drive. If it’s anything like my S80, it will be rock solid and reliable for years to come. Repairs can be expensive on these. But it’s very rarely ever needed.

Hi James, thank you so much for this review, this really hit very close to the heart! We had a black XC70 T6 Polestar with my parents, bought new in 2013, very shortly before I left home. This was the last car that me and my dad specced together and a very special spec it was! Every time I visited, I wanted to drive to places, just to enjoy it. Totally agree with all your points. To this day it's probably still my favourite car. I was very sad when my dad got wowed by a V90 of the next generation and sold the 70, the new one being a major letdown. I still have a lot of pictures of the XC70 and they bring up a lot of memories! Last real Volvo. Thanks again.

Morning James. I have a 2011 XC70 3.2 with 138,000 km. As in the UK these cars are keepers. I grew up on a couple of Ford 351 V8s but nowadays really enjoy the 3.2. My wife has an XC60 3.0 turbo which absolutely flys - and for that reason I enjoy my 3.2 as the power is solid without the need to enjoy myself too much. Really enjoy your work!!! 😀😀

Bought a 2008 Volvo D5 new in 2008. Drove it for 12 years all over Iceland. Fantastic car even if the radio controls were almost unintelligible. On snow tires this thing was unstoppable in winter.

Bought a 2016 xc70 t5 (2.0T, fwd, 8speed) new as wife's family car. Had to sell it after 7 years due to international move but brother in law snapped it up. Was great car, did many road trips in it, including 1300 miles in two days. Very practical and comfortable, nice to drive at normal road driving. Wasn't great when really pushing on in it, as pointed out steering feel disappeared. Auto box was average at best. Overall really good car, nearly great car. Wife still really wants another one!

This comment makes no sense! FYI Its not the amount of cylinders that dictate the price of a car in 2024 Its production cost and R&D. Getting smaller engines to preform better with lower emissions is what costs today! That and all kinds of lasers, radar, lidar, cameras, lcd´s and LED´s. As long as it performs as any other Volvo with a five-cyl or V8 who gives a fugg!?? There are a lot of great 4-cyl engines to keep you and your car on the road for as long as you want, if you just service it. Why are you complaining about nothing!? Im curious? If they put one or two more cylinders in an XC90, would that make all the difference and make the price ok suddenly?

@heiner71 Yes, I think the same. If I'm asking someone in Germany: "why is your ar so good" the answer is most often: "its fast". It's almost always about performance. For me, it's a good car if I can trust in it and if it makes me no problems. Also if it's made out of good materials. That's why skodas or cupras are popular in Germany. Cheap materials, just black plastic and they do all look the same but fast. That's all the people want here. Therye rather buying a Mercedes c class amg then a normal e class, that has better build quality, better material etc.

@@Emmitt328 It is also age-dependent. If you ask a 20 year old guy, what he considers a good car. He would mostly answer sporty performance as the main factor. Ask a 60 year old, and it is in the complete opposite scale. Comfort, safety, ease of use, price, build quality, etc etc is more important. All the factors that normally would be considered, would win the case for "a car point of view", and not just fot the "performance perspective". I think in 2024 80% dont really care how many cyl their new car has got, but rather if it can do the intended job without failure or excessive cost.

Love these! Got a v40 D3 that I use for commuting which is excellent, my wife has a xc60 r design awd that she says she’ll never sell! She used to own a xc40, and me the pre facelift xc60 and xc90. But never had the xc70, which after watching I’m even more tempted to try!

I was lucky 18 months ago to stumble across a 2016 model with a D5 in black 6 miles away from my house with 56K on the clock, at the time I was searching around and looking for XC 60s And felt deflated about the condition and space when looking at the hundred on the used market because they were primarily family wagons and ex-motorbility vehicles with it being the latest one made the LCD display and satnav is usable. The 220 hp is amazing for towing a caravan and if I play nice it will do 40 - 45 MPG on longer runs? It’s almost a unicorn, my love for it comes from seeing them as roads policing cars and paramedics vehicles and realising how capable and durable they were during their time in service, luckily mine was privately owned and hadn’t had a particularly hard life Well done, James for featuring a great car , possibly upping the values on the used market as they become scarce 😂😂

We have one of those in the family, last version with tan interior. You feel somehow quite special in it whilst still enjoying the understatement. The engine is really amazing allows sporty driving but is especially great on long trips, there the MPG also drops. Drawback is only the weight, not that you would feel it as much but it just chews through brakes quite fast. But considering that nothing ever broke so far running costs are very good

i bought one of these out of the blue when i needed a family hauler years ago. a 08 d5, this thing has turned out to be the best family hauler we have ever had.. i am a merc/bmw dude, so the comparison is fun for a nerd like me. the volvo is not a bmw, its not a drivers car.. its a users car, when you start shoveling kids, dogs, luggage and what not, you constantly realise how well they thought of something that makes the car more usable, i have never had a car, that filters out what ever its driving on, on 18" tires it barely feels the difference when you drive from tarmac on to a gravel road. where i live everything is covered with ice at least half the year, with chainmarks in it. while other cars feel like they are being shaken apart, the old tank does not care its REALLY capable in snow.. surprisingly so, mine sees alot of it, and the cladded lowerpart ables you to drag the sills and lower part of the doors through it w/o having to think about paint. its is based on a for platform, that is true, all car nerds have heard the stories of how both saab and volvo tended to modifie everything ford and gm forced them to use so much that they ended up saving no money.. that you can see on those p3's, just look at the weight difference between a xc70 and a mondeo wagon. mine weights 1940kg with less than 1/4 tank. i did not plan to own this car for long, i just needed it to fill in between cars, i want to have new ish cars for this job, but i still have the old tank, and will probably do so for at least 1-2 years

I was recently in the market for a new daily and as a previous XC90 owner I looked at both the XC60 and the XC70. After sitting in the XC70 for 5 minutes I decided against getting one as I found it very, very difficult to know where the front of the car was. Its a long bonnet that drops away quickly then has a large bumper. I just felt I'd be tapping cars in front of me at the traffic lights and roundabouts for the first few weeks! My wife, who'd also be driving it, felt the same. Its a pity as they're great cars and a D5 XC70 would've been perfect. The XC60 was a bit bland and the 3 I test drove all had dodgy feeling steering. Ended up getting a Discovery Sport with the 2.2D, which I love! You do some really very interesting cars on this channel, with proper reviews, thanks!

Fantastic review - it's always great to see Volvos featured on your channel. My first and current Volvo, a lowly 2014 V40 T4 hatchback, has given me an appreciation of Volvos of that era. Yes is may be a typical 1.6 litre 4 cylinder like well, most other cars in its class, but it certainly moves considering there are two engine specifications above it. It also has those luxurious leather seats, which I agree, are almost certainly best-in-class. Mine also has the same digital dash as the XC70 in your video here and it gives you everything you need, and nothing you don't. I'm considering upgrading to a V60 T5 or T6 (if I can get my hands on one) at some point in the near future.

That wood is so sexy! Since I knew what cars were, I always thought real wood trim was cool. Even though my mom always made fun of my dad for religiously speccing his cars with it. My friend has a facelift C6 A6 avant with this incredible yacht-like wood trim, I belive audi called it Beaufort oak. It’s honestly the single coolest trim option I’ve ever seen!

I've had a XC70 2006 D5, XC70 2009 3.2 and a 2016 D5 which was remapped, sadly a deer met its forever home on the bumper and wrote it off. Now I have a V90 cc D5

I have a P3 V70 D5. Hands down the best car I've ever owned. Had it for nearly 10 years now, and it was 2 when I bought it. 93K, overall average 46.8 mpg, with 73 on a run, 1000 miles on a full tank. 6 speed manual, 215 bhp and two stage turbo. I didn't consider the XC - more to go wrong. The T6 has a chain driven gearbox. I had a pet ex main dealer mechanic who looked after it until age and arthritis got the better of him. He didn't like the chain driven box. The service manager at one main dealer said leave the Tiptronic boxes alone, they can dump themselves at 100K and it was 4-5 grand for a rebuild. Looked at a V90. Again, different main dealer said no, stick with what you have - far less to go wrong. So I intend to drive it or myself into the ground. The V90 has 2/3 the cargo volume of the V70, and waaaay less than my old 740s, and the horrid touch screen for everything. Volvo owner for over 40 years, and a nice T5 ragtop for the sunshine.

We have an Oyster Grey 2010 V70 T6 and love it. Just make sure to change the oil in the gearbox, rear dif, Haldex and bevel gear if you're going to keep the car for more than 5 years... 0-30w Synthetic engine oil every 10,000kms or 6,000 miles. Just a great car

We have a 2015 d5 version your friend had in previous video. I've never regretted buying it because in terms of practical reliability it has been great. I wanted a l322 range rover 3.6 but think this was the sensible choice.

I have a 2013 V60 with the vibrant copper colour and R-design package (D5 engine). It's a very rare combination and it looks great. I've only ever seen one other V60 with that colour and R-design combined, and I've had it all these years.

Lovely car and so comfortable to drive. I borrowed a friends one for two weeks years ago. The T6 is a silky smooth motor and gives mote than enough power. Fuel economy was terrible however, getting me at best 14-16 L/100 in light short trip driving around town! And it only drank premium fuel. That said, I would seriously consider buying one today. Unlike modern cars, The T6 is NOT a direct injection design, meaning carbon buildup is a non issue and long term lifespan is much more assured. And Volvos from this era were still well built, using good materials and outstanding rust protection. With and average amount of care one of these should last for 100’s of thousands of KM.

Back in 2019, I picked up a 2018 Volvo V60 Cross Country. I got it because I couldn't find a good example of an XC70 within my price range. The V60 is a very good car, but it is still a poor substitute for the XC70, mainly due to the size. I really regret not paying the premium and getting the bigger car.

I am running a manual 63 plate D5 with the Polestar tuning can manage high 30's and even low 40's mpg on a long run. I found the adaptive damper settings are a bit vague in comfort but very good around the doors and popping downtown to the shops, dropping the kids off and the sport mode sharpens things up down a B road or on the motorway. The advance is meant for towing which I don't need at the mo. I am still running 18"s but plan the lift kit, spoiler and AT tyres. Great car.

I remember reading Volvo Xc60s haven’t got a fatal accident to their drivers yet . When I think of a proper Volvo I think pre-China owned and even pre-Ford Volvo cars ie a Volvo XC70 early 2000s proper tank of a car

They have that reputation but I believe it is illl deserved. I had 3 P2 S60s and they were all needy things. Constant niggling problems. My current V70 P3 is far less troublesome.

Indeed a great comfortable car, excellent seats, good steering, nice to drive and lovely engines. The long boot length, with seat up or down, is a real bonus as is the square tailgate and sides, it's a much more useable space than the V90CC successor. I wish Volvo had continued this format, and the ruggedness. The standard XC elevated ride height is great for day to day use and also in rural areas, and with winter tyres it will cope much better than most cars and SUV's in snow.

I had a black XC70 and loved it. The only reason; it had to be switched was we bought a large caravan that killed the suspension. Should have ditched the caravan. I hurt my back quite badly when I had the car. I recall I couldn’t sit, stand or lie down, it was horrible. The only time I could get reasonably comfy was in the XC70, the best seats I could find. Great car.

A few people have used the S80/XC90 V8 in these, a Yamaha design apparently. If I was younger I might be tempted to do a similar conversion. A factor to consider with these cars of course is ULEZ compliance, many of the T6 imports are fine. My D5 is registered for the ULEZ zone "just in case" but I have not been billed for it. (Though I have driven around the perimeter). Certainly not a traditional driver's car, the feedback is not on the same level as a light car with stiff suspension. I have had mine a while now, just a D5 automatic , parked amongst later SUVs it is positively elegant looking. They are a complex car, and getting old, I try to stay ahead of maintenance, IE to make the car better this year than it was last year. Passengers always praise the car for comfort. To put the performance into perspective, an old school 3 litre Capri (manual) could not beat this lazy arse diesel automatic to 60mph and would be spanked for top speed too.

I have had quite a few volvos, including the facelifted xc70 d5. I miss that car, towing, getting across a field when needed, and demolishing motorway miles. But it alway felt a bit vague and never ever returned more than 37 mpg, and I only got that once. One thing I noted across the various models, the P3 platform was more modern, and there are more features, but the P2 just seemed more solid. And I'm sure someone will be along to correct me and state that the 240s and 850s were better than any if those!

I crossed Sweden twice lately, those P3 XC70s are everywhere in Luleå and northern Sweden, you see dozens of them everyday. I own a P3 S80 from 2012 since 2018. Original suspension was too vague. Fixed it with Koni Special Active + iPd rear anti roll bar, although it is VERY crashy. Depends on where you live and the pavement quality. But at least it now corners like a go kart ! Also did the TFT cluster retrofit, a must have. The facelift interior (2011+) can have CarPlay fitted on the main screen so a very upgradable vehicle if you DIY. Only downside would be the throw away TF-80SC/SD gearbox. Towing & city driving can destroy the box (too much torque for what was essentially a Toyota designed box for lower output applications). Box cooling abilities are too weak for hotter climates. Flushing and additional filter will help but not cure a defective unit. Highway driving is, as aways, the best use for these. Other than that, tough vehicle able to swallow 6 or 7k miles non stop without a single issue.

You can add Carplay to the non-facelift XC70/second facelift S80 too in case it has an RTI, however it does require a good amount of knowledge (or money). Some modders slapped an entire raspberry pi running Android into them.

What's the milage on yours? I find my FWD 2005 quite garbage tbh, 22000 Swedish miles (137000 Queens miles) on mine. Driveshafts to name one (sorted 2007 and on), ALL chassis bushes perish around the milage (275 HP 450Nm upgrade of course helps killing the engine/gearbox bushes) . CEM-box is genuinly positioned by a pre-schooler. Drivetrain is nice though.

@@aquinamedia4508 About 140,000. Not cheap to maintain though but looked after and pampered early in its life. Had the suspension bush issues and arms etc and not cheap to keep up to spec. Just like the sleeper element. I know it's not fast by today's standards but still ok. I bet yours is nice with the upgrade.

The real bugbear of the Ford era P3 cars is the dismal Group parts bin electronics hidden about the body - just done the NSR door lock on my 2014 V60, and the OSF front is logging faults so that'll need doing. Ref the P2 V70R AWD - I had one for 8 years, and it was utterly bombproof. The steering was actually pretty good but you had to be driving the door handles off it to get any real feedback. 4C suspension I found mostly pointless - comfort was fine 99% of the time, sport was too crashy, advanced was just 'suspension off' mode. Rarely touched it, and then a shock went and I was presented with a gigantic bill.

I never really got the point of the xc70 over the v70. If you're really concerned with going offroad (which i bet 95% of owners won't ever really do), you can get the v70 with AWD, and the tiny bit of extra clearance won't make that much of a difference. All you get is a weirder, less efficient v70 with plastic instead of bumpers that skipped the 2014 facelift at the front. Still infinitely better than any SUV-crossover nonsense though.

AWD V70s are impossible to find (even more difficult than a 2011 manual D5 XC70 like mine) and even though they look much nicer for not having the plastic bumpers the slight clearance height increase of the XC70 actually puts it at an ideal height for trailer hitches. At least mine rides a lot more level on my XC70 than the old V70, which creates better weight dispersion over both trailer axels. And the tow cap of 2100kg over 1800kg makes all the difference for my use case. As a matter of fact the old V70 would also drag arse on the gravel track with the trailer on so the minor clearance increase of the XC is meaningful to country folk. Modern cars are pretty low slung, they're really just made for town and highway driving so I would say the XC70 really just has a more old school ride height.

I bought a 2010 V70 R-Design with 185k miles on it primarily because it was a one owner car with only Volvo maintenance since new. I didn't need the AWD and the 3.2 is a quite capable 235hp. That and the lowered suspension make it a great handler but maybe a bit firm of a ride. It's my 7th Volvo and 5th wagon (estate). It's been dead reliable, has great air conditioning, and looks much newer than it is. I often get offers to buy it. Would like to have the T6 turbo engine, but in the long run, I think it would just get me in trouble.

The og allroad was a car ahead of it's time, now we wish we could get a car that only has 3 major issues (two of which can be avoided can be avoided if you go for the right version). Also as much as I like the xc70 the capabilities and hardware of the original allroad (including low range on the manuals) are rather impressive, supposedly it's the only non suv that has completed a land rover off road course.

I know i will be hated BUT Ive got my V60 t6 recharge (hybrid) And I have to admit that its the best daily car ive ever had. Ive always drove BMW/Merc/Lex but this new gen Volvo convinced me to give it a try. Price is very good, its economical, fast and super comfortable.

Uh, so I have a P3 Generation Volvo S80 (this XC70 is P3 as well). I researched lots of mods for it, and one particular thing that came up was that digital cluster. Not gonna lie, it looks really cool, but it was just not designed with the Radio/Computer in mind this XC70 has, but for the more modern digital TFT screen that replaced the RTI pop-up navi unit and old radio altogether. Here's a complete list of issues this change brought with it: -Eco/Power indicators does not work or does not show correct values (ECM does not provide them) -DSTC (ESC) cannot be turned off (ICM will shot the volume yet it cannot be changed) -Shifting indicators may not be working with the manual gearbox -Clock can only be set in VDASH (during changing time or after unplugging the battery) or VDD -The service interval can only be reset in VDASH or VDD

After more than 10 years since it's introduction a well speced bitdi a6 allroad c6 is still for me the best all round car. The amount of bases these off road estates have covered is astonishing. Also, according to audi, the a6 allroad had more affluent drivers than the a8 and even the r8, something to be said about the allroad 's inconspicuous nature

P3 platform has very much common things with a Ford, but it is still very good in my opinion. There is not much goes wrong in suspension on these. Standard bushings, ball joints, rear linkarm bushings. 4C suspension shock absorbers will be expensive to replace. For a budget person those can be swapped by normal ones and ECU reporgrammed to not have a faults on the dash. From the engines either diesel or petrol is a good choice depending on what tickles your fancy. I love the T6. It is the next best motor after Yamaha V8. :) Shamely did not went into XC70, however there has been swaps from S80 V8 into this body. Did you know that that engine was also mean to be as diesel version, but Ford cut that option. However 300ish from stock. With turbo and sw upgrades can go over 400 hp. And that is real wolf in sheap's clothing. :D Thanks for the video.

XC70, the only car you'll ever need. I have a Japanese import T6 too - a 2011 one, a superb car, currently just over 60k miles, everything standard so far. The Japanese look after their vehicles, like new underneath. Just applied Lanoguard last weekend to protect the car from our salt. If you are ever in the Dundee area again, give me a wave... I drove an Audi A4 quattro for 12+ years before buying the Volvo - no plans to go back to Audi, the Volvo is better in every way with the exception of fuel economy (around 30 mpg taking it easy, the Audi diesel could return 40+mpg).

Only reason I parted with mine was the gearbox went at 158 miles. To sort the gearbox out was more than its value, not that the value was very high. Nothing quite like them, wish something as similar was still made.
