My driving style doesn't need all the suspension tweaks as I'm an old fart that knows when to not drive like I'm 21. 4th Volvo wagon: '80 245, '84 740 turbo and a '92 940 turbo. My toes up car.

I owned a 97 850R brand new, mine was black and had 75 miles when I got it. I learned to hate those 17" tires with the almost side wall. I wish they had made the Volans in 16" so the car didn't ride like a rock over smooth roads. I loved my car but it did have its deficiencies: Plastic dash mounts (engineers- Really? You couldn't make them metal?) so when you hit a bump when it's below 32 F they break and the dash squeaks. The auto transmission (should have made them all 5 spd manual) had main seal issues around 145k miles. And the cup holders! over the window switches?? My car somehow developed an electrical short at the fan one day when I was driving home, a slightly breezy day. That short developed into a fire and all I could do was watch the engine compartment go up in flames. That was sad to watch. I took very good care of that car too. I loved the look of the car and it was fast and a fun ride. I wish they would have made a 5 spd manual version with AWD and 16" Volans for the US market with metal dash mounts too.
@SoontobeClassics5 жыл бұрын
The dash of the V70 was a big update compared to the dash of the 850. The 17" are vulnerable, but they look stunning! Furthermore the flatter 17" add to the directness of steering, but you do have to give up a bit of comfort for that. I think it's still pretty comfortable, when you compare it to other sporty (European) cars.
@rickj19835 жыл бұрын
@@SoontobeClassics I loved the 17's but if they offered them in 16" I would have gone that route. The flat surface of the tire made it difficult to steer on roads that were rutted.
@SoontobeClassics5 жыл бұрын

Someone else has probably already said it, but the 850 T5R was NOT Volvo's first performance estate.... Look up the Volvo 240 Turbo wagon from the early 80's. The fastest estate available I believe. The the 740T Estate, also a quick car for its era. Let's not forget these iconic cars.
@SoontobeClassics5 жыл бұрын
I agree with the fact that we must not forget those iconic cars and the fact that they were quicker than average, especially for estate cars. However calling the 240 Turbo wagon a "performance estate" is a bit too much for a car with 155ps that weighs over 1.300 kg, does 0-100 in 9 seconds and a has topspeed of 190 km/h. BMW sold the 528i (sedan) in the same period which had 30ps more. Above the 528i came the M535i and M5; those were actual performance cars. In my opninion the first true performance estate car was the BMW M5 Touring, followed by the Audi RS2. In my eyes the Volvo 850 T-5R was the first estate car from Volvo that earned the "performance estate" tag. Nevertheless, there are probably enough heavily tuned Volvo's 240 Turbo that will outperform a standard 850 T-5R.

@SoontobeClassics6 жыл бұрын
Hi, you're right. The 850 is more old school. But the V70 definitely has the nicer interior and I really like the wide front fenders of the V70 as well. I really like them both, as long as they are yellow or orange :-)
@klaspeppar56196 жыл бұрын
That orange color is really special and only really works with that body stile, it is almost as special as the “T-Gul” color of the 850 T5 and T5R but not as “exclusive” as the “T-Gul”. But I personally prefer the V70n R over the X70 R and 850 T5R.
