Volvo has the D13, it's a very good engine. For some reason the US Volvos have a bad reputation, perhaps it's the fact it's made in the US that lets it down. Cabover Volvos used by much of the rest of the world have a good reputation as a premium truck. Just like you don't like Volvo's and they don't suit you, long wheelbase conventional Peterbilt's and Kenworth's, don't/won't work in other countries applications. Worth remembering KZbin is viewed all over the world not just North America.

As a company driver, I've had really good luck with a mid roof Volvo for flatbed. The company takes good care of them, the engine does just fine with regular legal weight loads, and I don't think the automatic trans is any worse than any others I've driven. If mine had a manual it would be a pretty great truck.

I’ve got a 2024 VNR 640 with the D13. I specced every detail of the truck. It hauls fuel daily, and gets in and out of old small stations throughout the Memphis metro area with ease. Plenty of power, 8+mpg are great. Leather seats and wheel, plus the floor mats design make it easy to keep clean when you’re in and out 8-12 times per day. I was using an 04 379, and 2 w900 Kenworths. My Volvo is much lighter. I’ve since switched my all my trucks to Volvo, and with 16k+ in fuel savings every quarter, and the reduction in downtime because of new equipment, ALSO…. Having to service the truck 1/3 as much as my old cats, I couldn’t go back. The Volvo trucks have been worth the initial investment everyday. One last thing, when rush hour hits, and it’s stop and go for 20 miles, that auto transmission makes it much less annoying. Would my 3406E beat my Volvo to the top of a long climb? Absolutely, but at what cost?
@SoCal7802 ай бұрын
Well, as you know, I’m not a big fan of the new Volvos either. They look nice, but I hate the automatic transmissions, the Volvo engines (you know how much I love my 565 horse Cummins ISX!), and the DEF Emissions Systems which is why I have kept mine for so long. Plus, mine only weighs about 19,500 lbs., which is considerably lighter than the newer models. The interior cab and bunk are literally the same, minus the needless electronics that you described. My truck now has 2,904,000 miles on it, a mere 96k shy of 3 MILLION MILES, and still going strong!💪

I absolutely love and live full time in my ‘21 VNL 860. I keep the bunk table set up and I sleep in the top bunk. The built in ladder for that model year is garbage, so I use my own 4-step ladder and tuck it behind the passenger seat when not in use. At this moment, I’m in a ‘24 760, delivering it for another driver. I was offered this truck, but this bunk reclines like a hospital bed with a mini table that folds down from the wall. I’m not impressed with it, so I’ll keep my older 860.

Just to clarify. The airbags in these trucks don't explode in your face if you hit a car, even at great speed. They will, however, deploy if you hit an immovable object that even your unstoppable force can't move or run over. Such as a building or another truck. These trucks also have ACC, Adaptive Cruise Control. It's like cruise control, but it's connected via satellite to know where steep hills are and such. It will also use the axle scales to know how much the truck weighs in order to select the appropriate gear for going both up and down hills. It will also use the front collision radar to keep a set distance between you and the vehicle in front of you so it'll automatically adjust the speed to match the vehicle in front, even if you have it set to a higher speed. You can adjust the distance yourself. It also has LCS (Lane Change Sensors) which will warn you if you run onto the lines without indicating. Connected to this is an assist which I have forgotten the name of. It helps keep the truck between the lines and will automatically steer back to the middle of the lane if you run onto the lines. These features can all be switched off The transmission is an automated manual with a manual mode so you can manually select the gear you want with the buttons on the side of the little lever on the side of the seat.

I've also had my truck slam on the brakes after passing a large shadow; nothing in front of me. It did this on a turn while I was hauling doubles. smh Overall they are decent rides, and can get some good mileage.

So next truck to check is if Scania goes all the way and sell over at US again. The Bruce Wilson channel has a V8 770 hp ( at the wheels ). Scania is shipping over to the US to test the market. But the display truck hasn't the longline cab. I imagen that eill be an option when the days come. The trucks from last time they tried is still in use in defferent areas of the states and the owners seems to maintenance them over and over instead of buying new ones. It seems that they are that good.

I like Volvos for the ride quality and maneuverability, but every one I've driven seems to have bad air leaks, even the newer ones, and very slow compressors. You park the thing for your 30 and then both your air tanks are half drained.
@tntfreddan3138Ай бұрын
4:35 "At least it's built in the states". That's why they're not as good quality as the ones built over here. The Volvos over here are built for much higher weights than the ones in the US. The front axles are classed at 8 tonnes (just below 18k lbs) and each drive axle is made for 11.5 tonnes (25k lbs). Sure, our distances are not as great as the ones in the US, but we move much more cargo per truck in Sweden than in the US. The truck and trailer I drive has a combined load capacity of 38 tonnes (85k lbs). And our D13 engines are borderline bullet proof and so are the D16s. The only way they break down is due to poor maintenance. I've seen both engines having well over 100k miles on them and they're still running. Edit: The Volvos, even the US ones, are heavier usually due to more robust axles and thicker frames. Wouldn't surprise me if they use similar axles to the ones we have here. Thogh I find it a bit weird cuz I drive both rigid chassis Volvo FHs and Scania R-models and both weigh around 28.5-29k lbs even with an insulated box, reefer unit and stiffer/reinforced frame. Also, the axles can take much more than what they're classed for. The front axles are classed for 8 tonnes but they can easily take 11 or even 12 tonnes. They're limited by the weight limitations on the roads and there the max allowed load on a front axle is 8 tonnes. The standard drive axles are classed at 11.5 tonnes, even though they can handle so much weight that the tires will go flat before the axle goes bust. That usually happens around 20 tonnes of axle pressure. Though it's not recommended to drive like that. The steerable, non-driving tag axle is classed at 8.5 tonnes, but can easily handle around 11-12 tonnes.
@wainber1Ай бұрын
That some of the newest Volvo cab-forward HGVs appear to be so heavy that the types of loads they are allowed to, under US federal trucking regulations, are more restricted than other HGVs is weird. Yes HGV safety is important but so many such vehicles that are tractor units and don't have toilets or showers in them should make them light enough to handle some of the most common types of loads that are not the widest, tallest or longest. Some loads that are a bit wider or longer than usual don't require pilot vehicles even if drivers who agree to haul such loads need special permits to do so. 80,000 pounds by the way equates to just under 36.3 metric tons. Some articulated HGV combos, if pulling only one trailer, can if laden and driven on roads in some European Union member states, weigh as much as 44,000 kg, equating to just over 97,000 lbs.

I think why most American truck drivers don't like Volvos or wouldn't want to drive one is because Volvo doesn't really build an enthusiasts truck anymore. They make fleet trucks, nothing else really. But that's not out of the ordinary these days, Freightliner too is becoming mostly fleet trucks. Traditional long hood conventionals are slowly getting phased out because of the government and big carriers pushing for more aerodynamic designs. If you go back far enough, every truck maker in the US market made long hood conventionals at some point, Volvo made real nice ones in the 80s and early 90s when they were partners with White and GMC.
