Volvo XC70/V70 - Fixing park distance control

Great video. My V70 got a strange issue. Some days it works and some days it doesn't. Right now it's not working. A couple of days ago when it was activated, all the sensors worked except for the one on the far right. Didn't respond to anything in front of it, and all of the sudden the system turned off and the service message appeared in the dashboard.. Maybe it's the one to the far right that's the issue.

Could also be a bad connection or a broken wire. Could be anything really. Intermittent problems are the worst. Mine seems to be acting up when it’s been raining and there’s a lot of water on the sensors.

Hello, great how to but I cannot manage to find my problem still. I've done a diag using VIDA and it told me that parking sensor 1 and 4 are in default. On my dash I have a message telling me that parking assist need service, and no bip at all when reversing. I cannot manage to ear anything coming from the sensors using your method, but I guess none of them are even trying to work. Also, manual transmission on my side, if that change anything. Fuse OK. Any ideas ?

You could try swapping the control box out for a different one? A used one on eBay sells for about $25. The part number is 9187071 for my car (XC70 2003), the part number is printed on the unit itself or you can look it up on volvopartswebstore.com Some assumptions here without actually checking whether this is correct or not: According to the wiring diagram there are two wires going from the Rear Electronics Module to the Parking Assistance Module: blue and white-green. The white-green one seems to contain a digital signal, I assume that's the audio signal or something, and the blue one could be indicating whether the gearbox is in reverse or not. My car has a switch on that wire I think, to manually disable the Parking Assistance when towing a trailer. You could check whether there is a voltage on the blue wire when the car is in reverse (assuming that's what the wire is actually used for)

My S60 doesn't even have one lol. But seriously idk if the previous owner removed it or if S60 even come with a battery Cover

@@Jan-tq5fu in germany you have to have at least a lil cover over the positive terminal, but bcs volvo made their positive terminal this big with the extra 2nd cable they prolly chose a whole cover, that isnt stupid but kinda better than just a small cover

What is that red switch you flipped? I don't see one in the cargo area of my 2007 XC70.

It’s a switch to enable/disable the park distance control. It’s useful when you’re towing a trailer and don’t want all the beeping when you’re reversing. Or when one of your sensors is broken and it’s continuously beeping ;)

@@AylmerQc01 No, it was in the car when I bought it. No clue if it’s original or if it’s something one of the previous owners installed. I know that the guy I bought the car from often used it to tow a boat trailer and had to reverse it into the water every time, so maybe he had it installed.

Thank you for video, but what did you use for testing the sensor? That white small box with wire?

It's the microphone/volume control of an iPhone headset/earbuds. I just used these to make it possible to film and pick up the sound of the sensors at the same time. You can just put your ear next to the sensor and actually hear the ticking.

You can just put your ear next to a sensor while the sensor is active. You can hear it ticking when the sensor works. If one sensor does not tick then it is probably broken. In the video I used the microphone of my iPhone's earbuds to record the sound. google translate to Swedish: Du kan bara lägga örat bredvid en sensor medan sensorn är aktiv. Du kan höra det ticka när sensorn fungerar. Om en sensor inte tickar så är den förmodligen trasig. I videon använde jag mikrofonen på min iPhones hörsnäckor för att spela in ljudet.

Yes, that orange switch disables the park distance control. Not sure if it’s aftermarket or OEM. But it comes in handy when towing a trailer or when one of the sensors is broken :)

@@dvdouden I just tool a look at mine I don't have the switch must be for the xc70 only or it could be aftermarket but it seems none of my sensors are working none are visibly damaged. But I can't hear the ticking like in the video

it is 100% aftermarket, alot of ppl do it when they are towing frequently.

Hi. I installed the camera myself and replaced the display with a higher resolution one. It can no longer display the navigation system, which is okay since it would no longer read the disc anyway.

yes, car came with it straight from the factory. The camera and display is something I hacked together myself

@@xantor_ no, the RTI doesn’t work anymore. It didn’t want to read the navigation dvd anymore and it was 15 years old anyway, I use my phone for navigation. There are two videos on how I replaced the display and how I installed a camera. Go to my channel and sort the videos by view count, they’re in the top ten. KZbin won’t let me link to them directly…
