My favourite bit of trivia about the Emden is that it made such an impression it's name became a part of 3 different languages. From wikipedia: "After the bombardment of Madras, Emden's name, as "Amdan", entered the Sinhala and Tamil languages meaning "someone who is tough, manipulative and crafty." In the Malayalam language the word "Emadan" means "a big and powerful thing" or "as big as Emden"

@bkjeong4302
@bkjeong4302 5 жыл бұрын
Joan of Arc Alter Graf Spee at least had a fairly successful cruise and Bismarck (even with a severely flawed armour design) ended up as one of only three WWII-era battleships to take down another capital ship. Given the weakness of the Kriegsmarine surface forces compared to the other major navies, that’s...well it’s far from great but it’s not that bad of a track record, especially when you consider that WWII would prove battleships and surface commerce raiders were obsolete.

The end of the Dresden has a funny twist to it. So the cruiser was anchored in a Chilean island where the governor was trying to get them out of there when two British cruisers showed up and deciding that international law was boring they started shooting at the Dresden until it sank. After that, the governor (that had been in a boat around the Dresden when the British opened fire, thus enduring part of teh bombardment ) went up to the attacking cruisers and basically told them. "WTF?" Since they had violated Chilean neutrality the British were forced to pay reparations for the damage caused to the island, including the full price of a cow that had been so scared by the gunfire that the owner claimed that it would never produce milk again. After that, the governor gave them a "good job" certificate and then let them go away.

7:20 There is an amazing story about the Emden's landing party. They were trapped in the Island, while they had to watch their ship getting destroyed. After that they took a small sailboat to make their way through the south Indian ocean to the neutral dutch colony of Sumatra (Indonesia). There, they arranged a meeting with a german merchant ship. Tsingtau, their harbor in China was captured by the japanese at that time, so they changed their goal to returning to Germany. They got aboard the merchant ship and disguised themselves as italian, to avoid allied naval vessels. They made their way to Hodeidah in Yemen. From there, they went to the north to take a ottoman train back to Germany, had to cross the desert and fight against arab tribes. They've made their way back to Germany, only so that most of them would get killed in the trenches shortly afterwards. Their Commander was *Hellmuth von Mücke* . He survived both world wars and was a big opponent of the rearmament of West Germany.

Fun fact: almost 30 years after Von Spee was defeated at falkland islands, the German ship Graf Spee was sank at the Rio de La Plata (at Buenos Aires) by its sailors, as the ship was damaged. Funny to think that Spee's fate was tied to Argentina. Many of the sailors eventually established at the province of Cordoba in a town called Villa General Belgrano and if you go there you can still see much interest (suspiciously much interest) in the German navy of those days

I read that Von Spee used a tactic as old as naval warfare- after he was done raiding an island in the Pacific, he made sure the locals saw him sailing at a direction other than the one he intended to go until he was well over the horizon. This worked, as the Brits ended up diverting at least one battlecruiser to protect Australia and New Zealand.

The funny thing is the German scuttled it from being captured. Even if it scuttled in early war, they effectively harrassed the allied merchant shipping. Like the man behind the name.

You’re confusing the Graf Spee with the Bismarck. The former was the pocket battleship, the latter was a full-on battleship brought down by biplane torpedo bombers (....and two British battleships to blast the crippled vessel to bits, but the planes probably could have finished the job themselves)

Dragon's Armory Gunther Lutjens is another Kriegsmarine flag officer that was nicer than the average Wehrmacht officer, perhaps because he was ancestrally Jewish. That said, let’s not forget that these two were notable because so much of Germany as a whole was evil; the bulk of the Kriegsmarine was in the u-boat service which was far more Nazified than the surface fleet.

The crew that the Emden send out to capture the radio station actually escaped the Sidney on a capture sailing boat, the hitchhiking on a disguised German merchant ship to the Ottoman hold Arabian peninsula, travelling through the desert, being shot at by the arabic tribes however they made it to beginning of the Ottoman railway system and then going home. This whole Odysse was turned into a Film called "die Männer der Emden", and although it was not synchronysed it has english subtitles, I hardly recommend it.

Meme ships video when? (You could do a collaboration with Drachenfel)
@bkjeong4302
@bkjeong4302 5 жыл бұрын
Breadley There are tons of meme ships around to discuss, even. Pointless ships: - all battleships during/after the late 1930s, on both sides of WWII (carriers took over as these things were being built, which meant they weren’t worth the expense. You really didn’t need these ships for AA or shore bombardment) - large cruisers (the WWII version of the original battlecruiser concept, albeit these were bigger cruisers rather than battleships with less armour. Ended up pointless because aircraft carriers could do their job a lot better) - Jackie Fisher’s “large light cruisers”. Ships armed with battleship-grade guns (in one case, 18” guns) that were insanely fast but had basically no armour. They were supposed to be used as gigantic, pointlessly expensive monitors....why not just build actual monitors instead? - the I-400 submarine aircraft carriers. They’re best seen as the precursors of missile subs as their goal was to strike a specific land target. Pointless as they were built when defeat was imminent. - the torpedo ram. Enough said. Terribly/funnily designed ships: - French predreadnought battleships. Arguably the worst capital ships ever built (obsolete upon launch, structurally unsound with a superstructure highly vulnerable to damage, extremely unstable, terrible armour and armament design, lack of standardization, and just plain ugly) - Japanese heavy cruisers. Trying to stuff as much firepower in a ship of given size is a great idea. Taking it to the point the ship capsizes and damages herself by firing her guns is NOT a good idea. They had to extensively refit 12 (!) cruisers from three separate classes due to them being top-heavy and structurally unsound, the result of having too many turrets and torpedo launchers for their size. These refits increased their displacement far beyond naval treaty limits. Downplayed in that the ships finally worked properly after the refits. - HMS Captain, aka why not to let private firms design warships for your navy - Novgorod-class monitor (not as big a failure as often made out to be, but who decided that a circular warship would be a good idea?!) - K-class submarines. Steam-powered subs intended to chase down an enemy battleline. Basically impossible to use properly in practice, and prone to flooding - those weird hydrogen peroxide-fueled subs the Third Reich cooked up at one point. The underwater Komet anyone?
