Bron Z/W film: Stadsarchief Rotterdam (public domain).
Muziek: Trevor Kowalski & Hampus Naeselius.
Fascinating images of the Dutch harbor city of Rotterdam well before the Second World War around the 1920s in color. The quality of this film is slightly less than you are used to from this channel as the source material in the Rotterdam City Archives is not too good. Nevertheless, it was considered useful to show these rare images.
The film starts with images from the Rotterdam Zoo. Subsequently, a large number of well-known locations are shown that were permanently destroyed during the bombing by the Germans on May 14, 1940. This includes footage of the old port, the old city center, the Delftse Poort and the rural surroundings of Rotterdam.
The original film has been motion-stabilized, slightly speed corrected, enhanced and colorized by means of A.I. video software.
Source B / W film: City Archives Rotterdam (public domain).
Music: Trevor Kowalski & Hampus Naeselius.

*Please do not comment that "Everybody in this film is now dead" or with similar wording. Also please do not comment "not an obese person in sight" nor comments like "When Rotterdam was still Dutch". It has all been said thousands of times before. So cliché* !

Pareltje. Wederom.

So, much of this landscape was lost with the German attacks on Rotterdam in 1940?
@HighFlyingOwlOfMinerva
@HighFlyingOwlOfMinerva 3 жыл бұрын
You could say about 90% of it, with the municipality of Rotterdam helping out to destroy an extra 5% after the 14th of May 1940. _I would know, I've been living in this city for years now._

I agree with @minerva's owl that practically all of it was destroyed. Whether the reconstruction of the city through the decades was an archtectural success remains a matter of contention. The city now has a modern feel but has completely lost its old charm, save a patch here and there. Architect Witteveen, however, wanted to rebuild the city with a vision of respect to what was lost, so keeping the medieval grid with small streets and alleys, much like they did in London after 1666, when Wren's plan for a new city with piazzas and wide lanes was scuppered. Witteveen wanted the citizens of Rotterdam to be able to recognise their lost city by rebuilding in the same style as the houses that were bombed. You be the judge and visit us!
@HighFlyingOwlOfMinerva

@@misterhoney2 Funny how you mention Witteveen because I recently made a Wikipedia page entirely focused on his plan. It's in Dutch but if you can read it (and I assume you do) it's worth it. nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plan-Witteveen Anyhow, you are correct. I myself absolutely *loathe* what the city has become, especially after seeing the possibility of the alternative which was Plan Witteveen. Sure, Rotterdam may not have had the same charm it had before 1940, or the same feel like Dordrecht, Delft, Den Haag, Utrecht or Amsterdam have today, but it sure would have looked better and felt a _lot_ more authentic than whatever it is we have now. I like to think of modern Rotterdam as a failed social experiment, imposed on us by "forward thinking individualists", and tell people from outside to visit Rotterdam just to see how to *NOT* build a city. P.S, some work of Witteveen has indeed been realised. Most notably the building of some bridges and the changes of some rivers. Some of his works I also listed in the article, but for good measure I made some individual pages to highlight them as well. nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rotterdamsche_Bank_(Rotterdam) nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pannekoekstraat_46-48 nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/PTT-kantoor_(Rotterdam) nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Twentsche_Bank_(Rotterdam)

@@HighFlyingOwlOfMinerva I'll definitely look into this! Thanks. I sympathise with your remark about how not to build a city, yet isn't it superior to The Hague or Utrecht in looks, lay-out, and traffic management, say? No offence. Naturally.
@HighFlyingOwlOfMinerva
@HighFlyingOwlOfMinerva 3 жыл бұрын
@@misterhoney2 No problem! One would think that when looking at the city today, but as someone who has lived here for 23 years I would say no. The reason for this is a meriad of reasons: - The first reason is that Rotterdam lacks an authentic feel of a naturally built city. Everything feels artificial and thus not very pleasant to walk through. - While a lot of places are now walk-only routes, there are no real squares with a lot of bars or the like. Everything is weirdly mixed and thus kind of a mess. When I went to Den Haag, I was amazed at the Plein, which essentially is a giant square with a statue and a lot of bars with buildings and space around it. The Nieuwemarkt at the Botersloot and Pannekoekstraat _could_ have looked like this in smaller form, but ended up looking pretty poorly in comparision. - While the city now has a lot of streets for cars to drive in, the pollution levels are the worst in my city. As an astma patient, this is *not* fun and made me want to wear a mask before this pandemic even became a reality. - Rotterdam's city centre has no real collection of... anything. Again, all the functions are separated yet somehow still ended up looking messy compared to a lot of old cities. Many would think the Coolsingel is the place to be for parties and bars, but this is not at all true. - There are no parks in the new centre, and thus a vital lack of green. Amsterdam, Den Haag and Utrecht all have multiple parks in the centre to go to, but here there are none. Only outside of the 'Brandgrens' you can find them. - The city has next to no houses in the centre. Basically, it is one big industrial terrain, with the problem now being that there is a housing shortage and more and more buildings where stores were located are now empty... I can go on forever, but this is essentially what I feel are the biggest gripes with the current city.
