Overhangs on patterns like this print really well because the printer takes a lot of time to print each layer with all of those retractions and the material has time to cool very well..

As an internal light source a Pico laser projector module with a prism or spinning mirror would let you cast cool animations all over the shell. If the shell were photosensitive perhaps it could also retain ghost images of scenes that are projected upon it over a certain period of time. But hopefully not cause burn in.

Then I was worried about figuring out how I'd be able to make a pattern like that for my specific application (an airy enclosure for a large 3 PCB stack) and here's a how-to. it depends on the plastic. I mostly use a PLA which has nearly no scent, and even then it's kind of sweet since it is corn based
