i went in to Bass pro fully sold on the vortex razor HD. After careful consideration and comparison between 3 different vortex spotting scopes and the cabelas intensity. i preferred this over the more expensive Razor HD. clarity was better for me, i prefer the build quality and size for target shooting and range use. Angled is the way i went as i don't view out of a vehicle or window. i will be purchasing a tripod in time and possibly do a review. however is you want a lighter unit for field use i would probably lean towards the razor HD much lighter but not as much magnification.

really like this spotter, one down fall the magnifier seems defective I have a call out to vortex waiting to hear back, the rest of the system is great

I had the same issue - you need to tighten the thinner ring before the magnifier ring to tighten it up.

@Kr1stof1987 I looked at both yesterday at sportsman warehouse in mboro Tennessee. If you are looking for weight vortex spotter sure not the one. Very Lil difference in weight from the 65 to 85. Both heavy

Has anyone compared this spotter with viper HD?

I compared the Diamondback 20-60x85 with Viper HD 15-45 x 65. (...and later also the Viper 20-6-x85 - see the update down below.) Both are sharp at full magnification and both also have enough/ very good light at full magnifications. There is no difference between the Viper and the Diamondback in light (both) at full magnification. Both at 45x magnification will give the Diamondback more light than the smaller Viper. Probably because of the bigger glass (85 vs 65 mm). Normally (85 vs 85 or 65 vs 65) the Viper has slightly lighter/brighter glass. The Diamondback needs a very precise adjustment. The Viper is much easier to focus. The focus ring on the Viper runs easier/lighter than the Diamondback. The stiff focus ring on the Diamondback can make it difficult to get the image sharp, because the scope shakes a bit when you are turning the ring. At the other hand: after longer use, this can be an advantage. Things can get too loose also. The focus ring of the Diamondback is quite stiff, but it stil runs smoothly: very gradually and without bumps or jerks Both scopes can give very sharp images, but you have to mini-focus the Diamondback. I think the Viper can give slightly sharper images, but it is very hard to see the difference. But the Diamondback has the advantage of 15 x more magnification. Both at their lowest magnification (15x and 20x): the Diamondback also gives you more minutes at dusk: in the latest minutes the difference between the two scopes it becomes clear. The Diamondback has a more 3D feel / things are popping more out / more real to life / more immersive view than the Viper, which is giving quite flat images compared with the Diamondback. I enjoy the vision of the Diamondback more, but the Viper is easier to use which I enjoy also. You can use the Diamondback for hunting or wildlife observation - no problem at all. But when using it for birding in combination with light backgrounds (bluish birds) and at sea or in the snow, when the sun shines, you can better opt for the Viper. Because in these circumstances the chromatic abboration is quite disturbing and loosens the sharp edges. Also shiney rocks (rocks getting bluish, because of the rain, in combination with the sun), you can't get a real sharp image of it, while the Viper had no problem to get it sharp. So, the Viper will do a much better job here. (80-90% less CA than the diamondback). The blue lines are far less noticeable or non-existent with other situations and backgrounds. The (little) Viper will cost a bit more than the (big) Diamondback. If you want all the advantages of both, than you have to buy the (big) Vortex Viper (20-60x85), but it will cost a quite bit more and is bigger and heavier than the (big) Diamondback. Personally, I found the difference in price bigger, than the difference in quality. (....between big Diamondback and the big Viper.) I can live with some blue lines for that price-difference. There is not a big difference between the glass of the smaller Viper and Diamondback, except for the CA control. At the end, I choose the Diamondback above the smaller Viper, because of the longer light during dusk and the extra magnification. Of course, a personal choice. I can amagine others take the Viper above the Diamondback. I was in a doubt myself also, even after testing them. It was a bit easier for me to look through the Viper: you have to put your eyes more precise behind the Diamondback-scope. The Viper has also another color tone, but I cannot say which one the better color has. Both are good. By the way: I also pointed my Diamondback to the nightsky and saw the ring around Saturn and the rings around Jupiter, without CA. The Viper showed also a very nice picture from these planets, only smaller, but maybe a very little bit more sharper. But it is hard to see the difference. You can see only the very little difference in sharpness at full magnification and at large (a few miles) distances. The Viper will show sharper edges and thereby more detail. You can see (at these distances) as much with the little viper as with the bigger diamondback. (sharper vs more magnification) And in some cases even a littlebit more with the sharper Viper. But you really have to look very good at it to see the difference. At smaller distances (under 1 mile) I find that I cannot see a difference in sharpness anymore. You can better zoom in on the objects with the bigger Diamondback and getting a better and more detailed picture of it, compared with the Viper. The (big) Diamondback has more depth than the (smaller) Viper. Using the Viper, I was in doubt if a branch was is in front of the tree or behind the tree. The Diamondback showed clearly the branche was in front of the tree. The Viper has a deeper field of view: a deeper field of things being sharp at the same focus. The disadvantage is here, that you cannot use the focus to see a better difference between objects. (for example: wildlife hiding in bushes) At the other hand: the Viper has slightly more contrast. Both have true to life colours, but the Diamondback seems to have slightly lighter colours at the same magnification. (probably because of the bigger lens) When looking at large distances, often you see some mist, especially at rainy days. The Diamondback can make a slightly bluish tint from that. You can see this more clearly when looking first through te Viper, which have ED glass in it. (Diamondback HD - HD does not mean (in this case) there is ED glass in it.). The Viper shows more clear edges. It is difficult to compare the field of view between these two, because of the difference in magnification, (15-45/20-60). If the field of view of the Diamondback is bigger, then this is a draw. (sharper edges vs bigger field of view.) My personal conclusion: both have their stronger en weaker points. The only significant point you want to opt voor the (small) Viper is the control of chromatic abboration. If you buy the Diamondback, you will be happy with it. If you buy the Viper first and then going back to the Diamondback, it is possible that you don't accept the significant difference in CA-control. The bigger(!) Viper (20-60x85) has more advantages than the smaller Viper: more magnification, better in dusk and dawn, bigger lens = more light and therefore even more sharpness. So, here we are talking about a bigger and very significant difference between the Diamondback an the Viper. But the price-difference is also very significant. It is very personal if you find this significant difference worthy to pay (proportionally) much more. The (big) Diamondback has also some advantages above the big Viper: lighter in weight, shorter and has a better field of view (at max and lowest magnification). Update: I also did get the big Viper (20-60x85) at home to give it a good look. The Viper shows more contrast and more colourull images. About 10-15% better than the Diamondback. About sharpness: at big distances (2 miles and more) small branches are getting vague with the Diamondback, where the Viper shows much sharper branches. Using the resolving power test target (with the horizontal and vertical lines) at 80 meter on A4 paper, I could see with the Viper one or at the most two smaller blocks with lines. A clear difference, but not a big difference. I could see as much with the small Viper as with the big Diamondback. (at the resolving power test.) The downsides of the big Viper. The Viper is very bulky. The size difference between the small Viper and the large Diamondback is just as much as the size difference between the large Diamondback and the large Viper. It is also top-heavy. Because of this, the handling of the Viper is less easier than handling the Diamonback. Both, the focusring and the zoomring are quite stiff. The Vipers (big and small) are not good at looking through bushes, while focusing at the background. The foreground then remains (too) sharp. The Diamondback is the winner here. The feeling of depth/ 3D is different between the two (the Diamondback gives a more natural depth), but both will give you a good 3D effect. A draw here. Sometimes (big Viper), object can really pop out to the point of exaggeration. But beautiful it is. The big Viper gives more depth/3D than the small Viper. Strange enough, I did not see a difference in light. Not at maximum zoom, not at clowdy days and even not at dusk. I aspected the Viper to give a lighter image. The biggest downside of the big Viper (this does not count for the small Viper): you have the feeling of looking through a tube. You notice the black ring around the view much more and there is really a small field of view. Because of this, you do not have the feeling of being in the view by yourself, but only looking at distance. The Diamondback gives more pleasure looking through it, but the Viper shows the better picture which is enjoyable also. But I really don't like the tube-feeling. The Razor does not have this, while giving the same image-quality as the Viper. But here is a big price-difference. Another small downsite of the Viper: the Viper has a much longer close zoom than the Diamondback. Personally, I take the lesser view-quality of the Diamonback above the tube-feeling of the (bulky) Viper. The only big(!) advantage above the Diamondback is a much better CA control, which gives also more sharpness. If the tube-feeling wasn't there, then I personally would go for the big Viper. If you only want to see perfect sharp and small details at long distances and not a littlebit less, then go for the big Viper. Information from Vortex itself: All the spotting scopes have a hybrid magnesium and polymer chassis and roof-prisms (not porro) with phase corrected dielectric coatings. They are waterproof, which means they have no problems with extreme weather, but it is not recommened to submerge. No ipx or Mbar is given.
