Vortex Propulsion

Vortex experiment 2013-01-02
A typical Thursday afternoon. Really!
Around the fan is a swirl chamber. The air is circulating; as much air goes in as out.
Whenever a flat surface comes near the swirl chamber, a pretty powerful vortex (tornado) settles in between. Both the swirl chamber and the surface are being pushed to each other, by the atmospheric pressure.

my question is what would happen if the fan was a lily impeller? if the area surrounding the airspace was shrouded with another larger lily impeller? Im trying to name the space where the vortex occurs , and think that having a third part in this experiment --even just a proprietary cage with ribbons-- could help visualise the direction of movement of the surrounding air. very interesting work :)

This work is fantastic! Are you writing any papers? I'd love to know how much force is being created, how efficient the system is, and if you can predict the force created by different vortices.

Thanks! I'm not writing a paper yet, but I do have a site which covers some of this (and most pages need more re-writing..) I'll place a link in the about text here above. When done well, I think the force from a vortex can be very efficiënt and controlled. But the trouble is that on the other side you'll have the same but opposite force, together zero. I am trying to break that balance.

Checkout patent 6497553 . It explains the vortex this creates. But the vortex thruster developed by Univ. of Houston had no moving parts, only compressed air and swirlers. www.ultralightamerica.com/images/EDAV/Vortex-Thruster.gif
