So interesting watching this as a politics student when so many of the administrative issues you mention are as a direct result of poor governance, underfunding of the NHS and privatisation. Crazy to imagine how different your experience as a Dr, your health and well-being and that of your patients could change if the govt simply prioritised health workers and the NHS, nvm the fact they are holding this country together right now - hoping this changes throughout the next few years!

I got all 4 medicine offers this cycle, thank God 🙏🏾. But watching this video really made me see the role of a doctor in a different light. In other words, the maths ain’t mathing. Gonna try and explore different career paths now but feels so scared and apprehensive because medicine is all I’ve ever known and is really suited to my strengths. Any jobs you can think of that require similar skills to a doctor but treat their workers better?

@@LTRLVRIFY under appreciated by general public and MPs, low pay for long hours, low numbers of staff, can’t become consultant unless the one in your hospital retires or dies, long career pathways (and you waste two years of your life being a generalist foundation doctor - this is how the government makes up the excuse for paying FY doctors £13.50ph like Dr Hani), healthcare system collapsing with long queues that doesn’t act to treat unless you’re literally dying right in front of them. No thank you, I’m going to the North Americas. Most people misunderstand the private healthcare system, Dr Hani’s example of the person who took a taxi because a hospital ambulance costs too much is a very extreme and unlikely event - these are only in cases where someone has no insurance (AND EVERY AMERICAN CITIZEN MUST HAVE a health insurance, if not there are government and state funded ones available)

WHAT?? Is that a joke, £13.51/hr as a medical doctor? How much is the minimum wage then? I left nursing in the US making $45/hr and I thought that was nothing compared to the time away from family and all the mental, physical and emotional toll. What so nurses make in the UK, do you know? The working conditions; understaffed, overstating your shift are the same as in the US by the way. You're right, so many other random opportunities and jobs out there that we never knew about growing up in working class families or certain societies (Nigeria for me). I enjoy life more now though and find way more fulfillment researching and teaching African dance cultures (who knew? 😀)

Such a dose of reality- thank you for sharing. I am a medical student in my penulitmate year, and recently was reminded of patient prejudices towards younger/ female/ BAME doctors. I find this so heartbreaking and infuriating, as my medical school tells us that we should simply put up with it. While I agree that patients should have access to adequate, timely and prefered treatment, I think that prejudices should be addressed (dismissed/ admonished). Does this bother you, or do you find ways of coping?

I'm in a bit of a funny situation when it comes to my next steps and whether medicine fits into that. I think I commented on one of your videos before saying I was going to study medicine but now since I have been out of university since last June I am trying to desperately find my purpose. Holding a degree in Biomedical Science doesn't seem to be helping me get a job but my grades are good enough so I could go for GEM. Not sure if I am going for medicine because I WANT TO or because im running away from the responsibility of getting a job. I need to seriously consider this because I'll be 28 when im a junior which then will take all my time so in regards to relationships / settling down that probably wont be as possible...hard times. I think I'd enjoy it since I switched to biomed from biology so the human aspect drew me in but this is a lifelong commitment.

This video exactly explains why I'm working towards leaving the country as soon as I graduate from Medicine. Although I am first generation, I can't see myself excelling by staying in a public health system where patients management depends on long waiting times and where my work is not appreciated (sure as a society we appreciate the NHS, but at the community level I feel our hard work does not receive the gratitude it deserves), we've seen this time and time again with real world pay cuts raising below inflation. I genuinely believe that within my working career there will be a massive fallout in the NHS, and that is why, as a person who is first generation, Im going to make the jump to go abroad to make sure my future and my childrens is better than what my parents had.

Hani thank you for this video. I have been a doctor for 17 years and I feel exactly how you feel. It’s a tough profession and you might never get a thank you. You are used by politicians in socialist countries like England and Canada and made to feel bad if you ask for better. It is not a profession for the faint of heart or if you have any mental health issues because it can really take its toll. You really have to have a “why” to get through the tough times and there will be many.

I think people don’t think of you because you’re more personable, humble and friendly. In my experience, doctors are not the friendliest and come off egotistic. It’s as if being a doctor makes them feel “special.” The ones who act kind just come off fake and it’s annoying. You on the other hand, are a breath of fresh air, beautiful, black and all that is not what people are used to seeing as a doctor.

I'm a domestic and have been called nurse so many times, when everyone was wearing scrubs for covid, I got taken for a doctor (even by nurses) ...
