Day 3 Of Helping New Mum in crazy overgrown garden.
The votes are in for the selection of the next task in this garden. What tough task will get done? The organic cave or the entrance to the paddocks?
I'm back here again helping a new mum with a four month old baby get her garden ready for moving in, its getting very close to moving in day.
When she sent me pictures of this garden and asked for help, there was no way I could refuse. Total overgrown nightmare full of roses and brambles and been neglected for years.

You can tell this was once a well loved garden. Chances are it was an elderly person's home that could no longer keep up the maintenance. Such a brilliant transformation for the new tenant ❤

I do actually do that sometimes, I pretend its a lightsabre 😂 but I cut my leg quite badly one time, so I don't do that anymore 😂😅😁

​​@@martinthegardenguyfor brambles I sometimes use a very sharp machete... but I am always aware that it's REALLY sharp...😊 Is this that kind of Japanese vines with the small white flowers? It looks nice for a while but if not constantly cut it takes over EVERYTHING. We had one single plant witch took over 3 neighbours gardens. It was planted in a big plastic bucket and the roots managed to penetrate the bottom.

Oh yeah, I love machetes but always feel the worst when swinging one of those things around! 🤣 I do have a thing called a brush hook that's like a machete on the end of a pole. But it's still not the safest bit of kit 😅 The vine you can see in this video, is actually a clematis. But a very, very old one that's not been touched for years. The one you mentioned, we call Bindweed. And you are right, it's a real headache to get rid of.

Wow, clearing out the temple of gloom took as long as the rest of the garden. That mum and Bub are lucky you came along. Well done and greetings from Australia. If I had to do a garden like that in Australia I would have to go in with a flamethrower first to clear out the snakes, spiders and odd crocodile 🐊

That's a great thought, I did find various pots underneath, so it's definitely a possibility, and also I found some very old solar garden lamps. Wow, it must have looked amazing back in the day. Hopefully, I'll get a chance to fix it all back up to how it used to be🤞 Thanks Martin

Grass seed is looking good! I think the cave of wonders might have been built as a little garden seat or pergola? When the baby is a bit older, it will make an excellent playhouse/ pirates adventure castle/ space ship/ pony barn for the rocking horse/ who knows what! Really nice work!

Yeah, it looks like it was a nice seating area. Probably would have been lovely before the climbing plants took over completely. I love your imagination, I think you are right. I do like how you clip down the big pieces into smaller pieces that will compost more easily. Great work....and fun discoveries! That "cave" was so much more work than I could have imagined. Seeing it cleared, and the pot of thyme, still alive, makes me think it was once an herb garden. Great work.

Haha, yeah I don't even know I'm doing it sometimes. I try and compost virtually everything so it defiantly helps it break down quicker, and I can get more into the bags as well 👍its a hell of a work out for the hands though, I bet I end up with carpal tunnel 😂 Also, your right. The cave of nightmares was a lot harder than I thought it was going to be. So much dead wood, and seasoned vines it was far harden than cutting into green growth. I was chopping some small trees into smallpieces so they would fit in a garbage bag because there was no where to put them except in the bag. My hands ache today. I hope the secaturs you recommend work better than the ones I am using. @@martinthegardenguy

Oh, which ones? I only really use Felco and Okatsune seceteurs. I love them both 😁 but the Okatsune ones probably just slightly win for me. I don't have the biggest hands, so they fit nicely.

Sir, you have far more patience than I possess. I would have used an Oregon mulching blade to take it down a couple of inches from the ground then mulch it up for the waste bags. The bramble stalks left can be dug out after. This has been an incredible effort on your part and you are to be congratulated for a job extremely well done.

Greetings from Nottingham 😁Fortunately, I was unharmed 😅 other than loads of tiny cuts from the brambles and wild roses. The most dangerous part was (believe it or not) the patio slabs. It was very wobbly and so slippy it was like ice.

You needed a machete for this job. I think the cave of wonders was a gazebo with a few vines or climbing plants that took over the entire back garden. I admire your persistence to hack through all the brambles and trees.

Well, I've made a start on it. But it didn't go according to plan. It's seems to be a drainage ditch, that someone has filled with dead trees and old patio slabs and lots of other random objects. It'll have to wait to dry out a bit I'm afraid 😢 I have on the other hand, opened the view up to the paddocks. So it looks beautiful. Video to follow ❤️ Thanks 😊

I’d say any brambles left near that garden-fence, outside or inside, will cause major problems in the future as they sneak in AND if you have kids they will hurt themselves on thorns. There seems to be lots around anyway if you’re keen on blackberries. Well done 👍🏻

Cheers! They will be a pain to totally get rid of, but as you say.....for one month of the year, they are awesome 🤣 I love blackberries. I often got spiked as a kid when collecting them. That arbour was absolutely overwhelmed with ilex crenata (you probably know that, Martin!); I have some in my front garden and I have to keep a check on it because it spreads by its roots. One of the best transformations I've watched! Keep up the good work😉😉!

I was going to try to identify it properly, but I ended up doing my whirling dervish impression with the hedge cutter instead 😂 Some gardening jobs don't actually call for that much "gardening " to be fair. What a cute corner that will be for the kids. You did such a careful and meticulous job clearing as you went. Best way to do it so cleanup isn’t so overwhelming. Just let the mum know that the bush against the fence closest to the right side of the corner looks from here to be an oleander which are poisonous. Good to see you back in action. We’ve been promised a wet winter here in So. California but we’ll see if it happens. 😊

Oh, hello 👋 😁 thanks for the comment. I wish we could grow Oleander outdoors over here. They really don't like our winters (or at least in my part of the UK) I've got one in a pot that I have to hide in the greenhouse over winter. I think the plant you saw was a Bay Laurel. But I may be wrong 😂 To be honest, I tend to be in auto pilot when I'm holding tools 🤣 and cutting things hard back. Definitely need a beefier hedge cutter. That Makita battery one is great for fine work and pruning, but something like a Stihl HS82 petrol cutter would make very short work of this. Not cheap I know, but powerful and robust and would save you so much time.

Haha, I actually have the HS45, but I like using my cordless kit to put it through its paces. You're right though, it would have eaten this up easily. The cutting diameter of that beast is quite impressive. My goal though isn't always to go as quickly as possible. I love gardening, so I like taking my time. 😁

I think you're right 👍 it did look like the spiral plats that wisteria can sometimes form. There was also some clematis that'd been long ago snuffed out.

I was sorta' sad to see this go. Had you clipped into the doorway and removed all of the downward roots and shoots, this would have made a lovely sitting area out of the (not too extreme) elements. But most assuredly would have been wonderful on a hot sunny day, to dip inside of the "bush house" and sit a spell with a cuppa and a good book.

Yeah, I was quite sad to see it go as well. My original plan was to make a green igloo type structure. But she didn't want that. And in the end, it turned out it wouldn't have worked anyway. The plants weren't growing up and over. They were mainly vertical growth. But wow, wouldn't it have looked great if it had worked 👍😁 I'm planning on building a runner bean teepee for my kids in my own garden. At least it'll work.....I hope. Thanks for the comment. Greetings Texas ❤️ Quite right, brambles are. Although the fruit still has major redeeming qualities to stop people hating it 🤣 so we only hate it for 11 months of the year. To be honest, it's not really a massive problem in most gardens that aren't neglected. It's can be spotted quite easily and removed. It's only when a garden gets left of many years (like this one) that it really becomes a problem. It's can give nasty scratches, though 😅 Thanks for the comment. Truly, it's appreciated. Martin

Someone in the past really made use of this old garden and treated it well. The trouble with well-loved gardens is that they usually have nicely augmented soil--which the weeds adore once the caretakers are no longer vigilant. (He should have left the arbor with a Mohawk. It looked kinda cute.)

You're totally right, as soon as I started, I could see lots of signs of how nice the garden used to be. Bug hotels, bird boxes, lots of timber furniture and structures. Wouldn’t that be Ute when power washed and dried the painted white on white with a patio set and as a gazebo. With some flagstones. Patio could have multi colors paint drawing flagstones. With bird feeders and bird baths. as in a nursery garden. Paint or stain everything else.

Rather than do the paddock entrance which may or may not belong to the house I’d have been tempted to power wash the stones and mix a bit of concrete to put some of the top stones back that had come off

I'd did consider it, but half those slabs really need relaying properly. They were very wonky. So washing them, at least now, would have been pointless. Until they are all safe and none wobbly. But as much as I like helping people out, this would be a massive (and very expensive) job. So I had to concentrate on the greenery, as that's my specialty 😁

Excellent result but I kept wondering why you didn’t take the trimmer to ground level or close to ground level and slice those stems all at once and pull more out at a time instead of snipping 6 or 8” snippets a million times. Just seemed like a ton more work. Either way the end result is terrific. Edit: Will she let you take down any bush that’s even just touching the fences? It’s rot and damage waiting to happen.

Hi, the reason I didn't use the trimmer was it was that thick, it kept jamming up the blades. I'm sure there are easier ways than the way I did it, but I love using as many manual tools as possible. I'm old school 😂 I may be visiting this garden again next year (spring) to carry on and tackle the rest, as you can probable tell, there's still quite a lot to do 😁👍 All the best Martin.

Oh wow, that'll be a beautiful display. I love seeing them, but always with a hint of sadness. How has the weather been over there? It's been (as you could probably tell) very wet and miserable here. @@martinthegardenguy Definitely still wetter and colder than usual, there was more snow on the Southern Alps this week, so light frost in Christchurch, and everything is growing like crazy, meaning more fuel for wildfires when it does switch to hot and dry. Most years that would have already happened, dry warm winds from the northwest, like the French Mistral.
