One of my biggest fears for the series is that there’s going to be a weird canon split where Japan will get the fully confirmed Soriku romance while the English will be watered down/wishy-washy so it could go either way in the player’s mind without having to be explicit

the first half of this video had me nodding, agreeing, and I thought I was going to be fine just sitting and watching because I was a fool who had not read Chikai's lyrics. and then the very first lyric hits and I'm slamming my hands on my keyboard, pulling at my eyes, and just going UGH... RIKU...... I also feel like it's some good foreshadowing for the future of their relationship. in Don't Think Twice, Sora wants to rush forward with this naivety that everything kind of works out okay, and a forced positivity, while in Chikai, Riku is being buried by fear and hesitation. KH4 is a product of this: Sora rushes forward to save Kairi, thus landing him in Quadratum, and Riku didn't chase after his own happy ending and let Sora go. but now, Riku is being pushed forward by the Fairy Godmother to go after his dreams (literally) and to save Sora; Riku can not hold himself back and needs to chase after Sora, and Sora cannot just rush forward in this new world (although it seems that he still hasn't gotten that memo, given the Yozora fight and KH4 trailer)... I feel like Riku is going to have to face his fears (haha) but Sora is going to have to learn to overcome the toxically positive ways he views the world: it's okay to hear and talk about doubts, it's okay to talk about this pain, and that's the only way to get your happy ending - being honest, even if it's not cheerful. on a different note, thank you for giving me a lot of queer hope. I had always believed that Sora and Riku would be endgame in some way, seeing a lot of my own experiences in them but... these videos just give me hope that they aren't 'in some way', but that this narrative is about them and their love. you're renewing my passion and hope for them and this series, so thank you!!!

It's worth noting, that oath (or vow, as you used in the video) and promise are fully distinct words in Japanese. Chikai (Oath) even has a line making that distinction, stating that promises are for making other people happy, they're shallow, and oaths are true and eternal. Kairi is always associated with 'promise' concepts. All of her key items and notes use the Japanese word for 'promise.' The only times 'oath' appears are from Riku, and very importantly -- Yozora.

I always just went "ye boi it's some good kh shit I love my opening and ending songs yeeeeee" and my monkey brain stopped there, but like. I don't know how someone can look at these lyrics, read an interview where the composer was given a synopsis of the plot of khs, realize they are both two pieces of one song, then take in the entirety of Sora and Riku LITERALLY JOINING THEIR SONGS OF THEIR HEARTS TOGETHER IN A PREVIOUS GAME, and not instantly lose it over the implications of what that means.

This lyric once again parallel Isa and Lea. Isa becomes Saix who is the "don't need you guy" who Mirrors Riku's Darkness. But Riku's Darkness was feed by the Love of Sora he thinks he cannot have. But as Ansem, Seeker of Darkness says, Riku strength (Love) is vaster than Darkness. Basically, Riku Love is a higher plane of the Isa/Lea dynamic.

I'm a gay man and I grew up with this series. I never even deigned to dream that Sora would be gay but having had all of these story points put together, their separation from all the different console titles, makes me believe maybe.. Nomura really is writing the gay video game romance, the representation of a truly in-love gay couple that we deserve. Just the possibility has been making me emotional and breaking something in me because I have the same difficulty as Riku. It's so hard to tell guys how I feel without worrying I'm going to lose their friendship which means just as much or more than the potential to love them romantically.

I just realized Riku left the Way to Dawn at the spot where Riku and Sora sat in KH2. The Eye is facing toward where the Door to Light would be. It is like sealing that moment there. It is like Riku found his Dawn, and that is a physical person now instead of an object. And now, the Eye is watching it, and keeping it manifest.

It's very important to understand how much Utada has been writing about both romantic feelings by now through their song writing if you really want to run even deeper into this analysis, as there are a lot of their own queerness inserted on a lot of songs and also a big impact on all of Utada's own experiences on them as well. Recent ones like Somewhere Near Marseilles and Bad Mode go hard on how Utada experienced life and one has their kid on it, showing how much the artist's life changes and their feelings keep being important to new experiences and ways of love/enjoying life. Tomodachi is older, but it tells us all the queer struggle of falling in love with a straight person that will never reciprocate our feelings. So when it came down to Soriku it would only feel natural to write something like Chikai, that is also such a clear nod to the series drifting away from Sokai. Always found it very interesting that we see the word "promise" depicted as half baked excuses and not something someone who is already mature and sure of how they feel keeps making. Taking from personal exp as well promises really aren't it, right? A huge amount of them can't be kept through love stories and I feel that while Kairi is still stuck with them Riku has moved away from these "lies" and just shows his feelings through sheer strenght of his own actions. Great video and I hope you're feeling better since the last one!

Oh thank you I have the same impression of the paopu scene in kh3, Sora don't seem so into it and it feels forced, the fact that the camera stay twice on his face and his expessions are not what you would expected. It felt strange the first time I saw the cutscene. It was like the intention was not to be very romantic at the moment and it could be so much better if they actually wanted to make it romantic. I mean you could make an argument (a bad argument but still one nonetheless) that it was a mistake in animation or the creators weren't really putting thought into it if it was just one or two instances. But Sora literally looks upset for the entire scene (at least 5 shots straight of him) and the animators make a point of pausing to show us his uncertainty for an uncomfortably long time. To go over it myself: First shot of Sora. The scene starts when Sora is left alone with Kairi on the tree. The literal first thing he asks is why Riku is all alone and not with them. Not to say he doesn't like being alone with Kairi but he almost certainly doesn't like her romantically if the first thought that crosses his mind when he's with her is why Riku isn't with him. Second shot of Sora after Kairi says to just leave Riku alone. Again, the animators make it a point to show us how Sora won't take his eyes off Riku. They show his fixation on Riku TWICE during a seemingly romantic scene with Kairi. It's no mistake. It's only when Kairi shoves the fruit on his face that he finally takes his eyes off Riku-- was Kairi jealous and doing it on purpose to get his attention? It's very possible. In the novel, it's stated that the reason why she cut her hair was because she noticed Riku did it which probably meant Sora liked shorter hair. Third shot of Sora. This is before Kairi explained her intentions with the fruit. If you look at Sora's line of sight, his eyes stray to the side (where Riku is) then to the fruit then to Kairi with an uncertain look. Riku is the first person Sora looks to when presented with the fruit, not Kairi. Fourth shot of Sora. This is after Kairi explained that the only reason she wants to share a fruit is to ensure they stay a part of each other's lives. Even with CONFIRMATION from Kairi that this doesn't have to be romantic (and Sora's VA confirms it wasn't romantic), Sora still looks uncertain. In fact, his eyebrows move downwards into an upset expression. At this point he's stared at Kairi and the fruit with a frown for way too long to chalk it up to "him being shocked/nervous." On the contrary, his expressions and body language seem to show that he's the exact opposite of nervous. He's strangely-- emotionless about the entire thing. Even when he takes the fruit, he looks hesitant. I want to remind you that by now, this is the FOURTH time the animators made Sora look upset at the thought of being separated from Riku and having to share a fruit with Kairi. Fifth shot of Sora, man finally smiles but it's small and not thrilled at all. He says "I'll protect you, Kairi." Once again, it's not romantic and doesn't sound like something he's thrilled about. It's a very fake smile compared to the one he shows Riku in literally every scene with him. Sixth shot of Sora, his smile fades and goes back to neutral. Gee, he sure doesn't look happy for someone who just shared a paopu fruit with his supposed love interest. There is no way that this wasn't intentional. The fact that Nomura had two versions of this scene and one version involved them not sharing the fruit pretty much confirms this. Conclusion is that the entire scene felt off. I went into KH3 already being spoiled that Sokai share the fruit and was fully prepared to be disappointed. When the scene actually happened, I was left... confused?

Not gonna lie, i mostly thought that soriku is just a pipe dream since we never had clear confirmation (in my opinion) of it, even if its obvious. But that line of the rings having the colors of sunrise kinda got me, that actually feels too deliberate not to be purposeful. I wouldnt be surprised if nomura couldnt make it more obvious even later, but thats already enough for me to really believe it. Also i had not known the lyrics for chikai and i was, as you said, completely destroyed by how romantic and riku-ish it is my god

If you look at the scene in Re Mind after Sora brings Kairi back, He makes the same obligatory smile he makes after they share two fruits. It isn't Desire on his face. It is almost like he saved her because "that is that thing he should do." because hero.

@@Fragmentsinfractals488 I totally know what you mean. It's a typical neutral Sora smile, but not one that shows true happiness. Usually when scenes are written and produced by an animation team then voice acted, the thoughts and feelings of the characters are communicated to everyone on staff so they can properly convey the emotions. Interesting how the two times we have heard from people who were involved with making the paopu scene (Sora's voice actor and one of the scenario writers for the games as well as the main writer for the novel), both of them seemed to insist that the paopu scene wasn't romantic. Whoever animated their expressions seemed to be in agreement too. It's strange how KH3 ended the way it did considering that in the rest of the game, Sora didn't even mention Kairi and kept texting Riku everytime he saw something cool, and Kairi talked about letters to Sora that she never sent him.

You don't want to hurt their feelings, so you "pretend date" them like children do. It is basically we are still connected, but I am older and I don't like you like that. So, Sora, because he is basically dying, gives Kairi her send off as the star cross symbolism completes, and the Destined to never be sets in.

If I may add another layer of symbolism regarding promises and oath, it's very interesting how (aside riku's evolution matches the promise he did with the crown necklace and now has gone even past that) the other time oath appears in kh3 is in remind, as an hashtag again, where someone is vowing to save someone else. The one speaking is hidden, and the only other example is when multiple people say the same thing so there is no clear singular person proclaiming this. The obvious candidate is the Riku lookalike yozora, who says it COINCIDENTALLY to frozen sora, but since Riku is also literally trying to save sora too, it stands to reason the multiple people saying this includes our Riku as well for sora.

I gotta admit I was feeling a bit defensive on this because I assumed the songs were about Sora and Kairi. Whenever presented with the song I remember it playing in tandum with a scene between the two of them, so naturally I associated the song, and the feelings that come with it, between them. But also just the symbolism we get that’s often associated with them too, one example that comes to mind is the Final World, where the ocean and sky are one (sora being sky, kairi being water). But I gotta say, it’s hard not seeing what you’re saying after watching all your videos on the topic. I feel like there’s so much symbolism and hints to the soraxriku relationship, but then there’s the fair share of symbolism between soraxkairi. Basically my brain is melting with the volume of information haha. I resign myself to whatever it is that Nomura and his team decide. I think "Don't think twice" is Sora's response to Riku's Chikai too. I always thought DTT is Sora's song even before I read translated Chikai lyrics, because the most iconic Sora crying scene is their KH2 reunion, he really doesn't expected it to take that long to find Riku again. Even before Donald, Goofy and Jimmy confirmed it with their teasing, Sora rarely say no to Riku and he has been encouraging Riku to reach out/cross the line too. Really whose pov could it be but Sora's? And of course it's about Riku! Chikai's lyrics is just wow. The fragile insecurity really remind me of Hikari, and the imagery is just like in the games and Sanctuary...so really this symbolism is as blatant as it get. Dawn and light through the open doors... I am still baffled how it's not accepted as fact that yeah this song is about Riku's feelings. Even if they don't ship soriku, how did they explain away dawn and light through the open doors???

So I went to listen to both versions (because I've never listened to the Japanese one in the first place) AND I noticed some things! - The little verse before the bridge (basically the part where Sora first says "Don't think twice" x4), which is also repeated at the very end of the song, is different melodically in both versions. So if you play them simultaneously, while in the other parts they sound like the exact same notes (making echo), in these two parts they sound like they're complementing each other. - At around halfway through the outro (the "Kiss me once, twice, three times" part) you start hearing the bridge again ("If you want to make it happen, nothing's impossible") as background vocals in the English version. BUT in the Japanese version, it's ALSO the English version of the bridge as back vocals, so it sounds like Sora is singing at Riku in the background.

@@Fannintendociccio1 Not really. There is a remix someone made but it's basically having the Japanese singing in some parts and the English one in others. It wouldn't quite work anyway because like I said, even tho they complement each other in those 2 moments (and almost fully sing-along in the "Kiss me one, twice, three times" part), the rest of the song is almost the exact same notes at the exact same time, so it sounds like just echo (except one of the two is in Japanese). To really make it work you'd have to literally get into really hard editing on both songs and, for example, change the placing of the vocals so one of the two sounds like two beats after the other in certain parts (like they're following each other), while having them take turns in other parts. It'd be A LOT of work

But I do have to remind that Slefie also emphasizes in a piece of optional dialouge what a "romantic" legend it is. At risk of saying something that might've been mentioned before, I just absolutely had to mention that it just hit me that, though perhaps unintentionally, the title of the song 'Face My Fears' can also be connected to what Sora was reluctant/afraid to face in the game (CoM? I forgot already jeepers; the bit with Oogie Boogie, you know the one) his own (possibly) painful 'true memories'. Maybe now that Sora's going on his own path of self-discovery, having forgotten whatever realization he had about Riku in KH3, it'll be doubly impactful when he finally faces them, and thus doubly scary. Before watching these videos, I always thought that Soriku was cute, but I didn't want to get my hopes up b/c there was no way it would be canon. Now though, I fully believe it is going to happen. I tried to be skeptical and not get too excited, but there's just so much evidence pointing towards these two's feelings for each other. It makes me so happy to finally live in a world where queer love stories can be told in media as widespread as KH. Looking back, you can see that this had to have been the plan from the start, but there's no way the mouse would have signed off on it in 2002. I find "Don't Think Twice" is "in the Light" to Us, the English speaking, and "Chikai" is "Hidden in the Dark" to Us. It is inversed for the Japanese. Riku is " in the Light" and Sora is "in the Dark". I am curious why? One Theory is Riku doesn't perfectly understand what Sora wants, and Sora doesn't perfectly understand Riku's Thoughts. And they are trying to Mind (Heart) read each other. This is a bad idea. It leads to the problems the Master of Masters/Darkness and Eraqus/Xehanort have. So, that is the next sub arc.

I thought about this as well! Some people have mentioned that whatever Nomura was talking about must have happened last year...Strange World, which features an openly gay male teen lead in a Disney movie, released in November of last year. Maybe it really was Disney being like, "Okay, you can make him openly gay now." Gosh, I would love that! But I also don't want to get my hopes up too high, lol. A lot of other people think that it may have had to do with something like deals with Marvel or Star Wars, etc. more on the business side/end, but would still change the direction of the series. Another possibility could be a TV series getting greenlit. But, I think if it was Nomura getting the okay from Disney to make Riku openly gay and/or allow Soriku to happen, then that would be something that would change the direction of the series far more heavily than any of the other options.

I'm so certain that a SoRiku greenlight isn't what Nomura was going to talk with us about. The only reason he didn't tell us what happened was because of time constraints. Nomura likely won't talk about SoRiku greenlights until after we see it to fruition in the game, not at a Concert before we even get a 2nd KH4 trailer. Also, Yoko Shimomura doesn't know what happened. SoRiku greenlight would certainly be something she would have caught wind of by now as that is a huge deal. Plus she kind of has to be in the know for music writing. I think it's fun to think that's what Nomura was going to say, but I don't think that's what it was at all.

Someone has already mentioned it, and although I haven't read all the comments on the matter (as I am sure other people have said this as well), but the line "Let's have our rings be the colour of sunrise," in Chikai does also tie into what Riku said at the end of CoM. After all, he did not choose the path of light, nor the path to darkness, but the one in-between, the path to 'dawn'. So, in the context of this lyric line, it also means that Riku's path to dawn is Sora. That really slapped me right in the face when things suddenly clicked.

Like, Don't Think Twice with Chikai's "Kiss me" part is like an aknowledgement of the doubts that were repressed. I remember seeing somewhere that most of the KH English translation ended up being changed to be more straight in a way because the western side of Disney didn't want to make it too queer , for example in KH 3 , remind dlc and melody of memory was not meant to build a romace better kairi and sora but instead give her character more depth and importance since she's always seen as the damsel in distresse or the girl of the trio ( that's according to an interview made whit nomura about the sudden uprise in kairi's character and her connection with sora) but the en ver made it seem like the games were trying to start a romace and this is unfortunately a thing that happens a lot whit Disney jp adding this type of queer representation in their media and Disney en changing it to fit the Disney brand but it might change since a lot of Disney's recent media has been queer friendly
