Welcome back to another episode of Andertons TV! Today The Captain & Danish Pete explore the world of NuTube technology in the form of Vox's new Valvenergy Overdrive Pedals.
Testing the array of tones these pedals have to offer. How well do they hold up in replicating the real-life valve amps they're inspired from?
With extra features such as built-in cab sims & linking function that allows you to use these pedals as if they were two separate amplifier channels. The Vox Valvenergy series pushes the boundaries on what we commonly expect from our regular overdrive pedals!

I would love to see Andertons do a comparison of a bunch of valve preamps (such as these Vox preamps, Victory, Two Notes Le Clean, etc) running into a couple of different solid state 'pedal form' power amps (like the Electro Harmonix caliber 44) and then into a 1x12 or 2x12 speaker cabinet. The concept of a valve pre + D class power stage (in pedal form) exists with the Milkman Amp, BluGuitar and Orange Terror Stamp - but can you get a good sound mixing different preamps with a power amp that can all be mounted to the pedalboard?

The Mystic Edge is a great pedal. I love the high end chime of an AC30, even if the amp doesn't have a few features I need. It's a great clean boost with the gain set to 0, and with the bright switch on as well, it adds the high end chime to my MT15 without sounding overly distorted.

Nutubes are vacuum flourescent displays. You probably have watched them a bunch they were quite common on VCRs back in the day. They have gates and grids like transistors but hold them in a vacuum like a tube. Its a gimmick, its not analog and so microphonic, it must be seriously isolated from any jarring or touching, its got no a space for isolation between the components, But it is really quite a novel way to take peoples money, using an old screen from a VCR, i give them props.
@mpirron1

And a power tube? No, never.
@stoneysdead689
@stoneysdead689 2 жыл бұрын
@@mpirron1 How can it be a gimmick if it works for hundreds if not thousands of ppl? They've obviously figured out how to use them successfully in pedal form to simulate a valve amp sound- and it's very close. No one cares if it's analogue, digital, or some combination of the two- we care about what it sounds like, how it performs- and you can't deny they sound good.
@mpirron1
@mpirron1 2 жыл бұрын
@@stoneysdead689 No, they don't, they sound like shit. They distort unpleasantly, and are hella microphonic.. So microphonic that every manufacturer that tries to use one in a circuit as a gimmick for show has to practically build a hermetic isolation chamber for them. No munufacturer is using them alone to do anything, They are surrounded by solid state devices like LEDS and transistors doing.the real work. Nutubes are all show and no go. And I never said they weren't tubes, I said they were. They are valves, They have the components of a valve and they act in the same manner as a tube. They just are not very good ones for audio. You know why? Because they're supposed to do it for light! I don't think you know enough about electronics theory to offer a credible argunent here. Of course, that's just my opinion. Its also my opinion you should STFU.
@mpirron1

And furthermore, you know how you know that crap. Because nobody's using them. If they were good, everybody be jumping on the bandwagon like they always do, Three manufacturers that's all who's using them. Even the developers of it abandoned the tech.

Might be seen as an unpopular opinion, but I think these are great and exactly what musicians like me need. Sometimes venues don't have an amp, and something like this on a pedalboard is a very desirable solution. And when there is an amp, you have one more OD pedal to play with. Also contrary to many in the comments section, I like their design. Many don't notice, but the brushed top has the similar X cross design on the grille of the Vox amp archetype. That aluminium top is classy and it's beautiful. The oscilloscope might not be super functional, but it's pretty cool. Id love to see how the oscilloscope reacts to different dynamics and different drives that I put into it. It doesn't need an effects loop because there is no power amp and you could simply put the time based effects after it before going direct, nearly the same as having an effects loop. If Vox reads this, I really commend them for doing this and I sincerely hope more stuff like these are made.

Guitar Center just started offering these a couple days ago on pre-order, I got mine from over the pond. For less than $1K you can open up a whole new world. I use a Vox AC10 or 30 through a Bearfoot Emerald Green prototype and KAT Treble Booster (another BMG product) and it turns heads. It will take you back in time... Cheers

I would have thought the point of amp modelling pedals is that you don't need to lug a great big amp to the gig. You use the pedal and go through the house pa via a di box. Seems a bit silly using the pedal and then going through another amp. That's what I do anyway and it works for me.

I just stumbled upon these in July 2024, because I was looking for a pedal to kind of "warm up" a solid-state amplifier that I have. Though, I have to say, it's an amplifier that was already praised for its sound and to kind of sound "tube-like" or whatever, because it was actually designed by Moog and so it's basically nothing to scoff at just because it's transistor-driven. - In any case, I still find it to be a little "flat" or dull or whatever word you can give a sound, while not bad, just a little "lifeless" in a way. And perhaps the speakers (it's a 4x10" combo) are a bit worn out from age and heavy use with synths back in the '80s actually. - I don't know what it is that makes it a little lackluster just on its own. - So anyway, I figured perhaps I should find one of those tube-based pedals to give it a little sparkle, but then also one that's good clean, which is what I want to use this amplifier for. And some of the pedals that came up are these then, but the Silk Drive is the cleanest one, and upon hearing some samples I kinda impulse-bought it, tried it, and it does almost exactly what I thought it would do. And that is that it kind of focuses up the guitar-range, makes it stand out a little and also adds some nice richness (like harmonic overtones) to a very plain sound. That said, I wouldn't have purchased it for its full (150-ish Euro) price, especially not for the simple thing I wanted to achieve with it. But I got a deal on it for just under 100 Euros and... while still a lot for it to do one thing, it's a good choice for "tubing up" a sound. But that's not to say it can't do more, you can get a nice drive out of it, do some tone-shaping, and it's really good quality in general, so it's not like it's "not worth the price" in terms of what it is. But just saying, it was exactly right for me at a reduced price.

As for the oscilloscope thingy... I'm a bit mixed on that. I mean, on one side, it's kinda nifty and you can also get a sense of the clipping, because that's what it indicates best. You can use your ears, but seeing it graphically kinda helps understanding what is happening and at what point of the settings or input. - Does that justify it putting it in every pedal and probably drive up the costs? - Probably not, though, you could possibly also use that feature for everything you send through it, but I'm not sure. - Again, it would probably be better to just leave it out and lower production-costs and perhaps the price because of that. - Maybe they could've just made a little window on the housing and shown off the nu-tube, because it's actually of quite a substantial size. Put a light on it, perhaps even make it respond to clipping or something, and that would be enough.

I think they all sounded great! It would have been cool to hear them into a DSP modeling amp or a Humboldt simplifier and even the bigSky cab simulator just to see how they sounded using these. But as a boutique pedal user I’d use these as just for the drives.

If these pedals had headphone output & stereo aux in, they could genuinely be quite useful in the studio.

It's not very good. I was very disappointed as that was one of the intended uses for it (I bought a Silk Drive). It sounded just plain awful in pre-amp and cab-sim modes into my Behringer mixer or Peavy power amp. But as a normal guitar pedal, phenomenal.

@@danieldurfee4901 Not sure why you felt that way, I too bought the Silk Drive as a substitute for an amp for recording purposes, and I found it surprisingly pleasant and very useful in the cab sim mode. Different preference perhaps? I like it, that's my verdict

@@aaronchong9856 I may have an idea. I left everything on my pedal board when I tested it into my mixer. I have a reverb and EQ pedal after the Silk Drive, but both are true bypass so I wouldn't think that would make a difference as long as both are off. I will try again later going straight from the Silk Drive to the mixer and skip the extra connections and see if it sounds better.

29:30 - Well, to be honest, I think they made these pedals fairly tasteful in terms of modern products. - I mean, I do think they're a bit afraid to go "classic", in that perhaps it might push away a wider audience, so they make them a little more straightforward and "edgy" I suppose, and also with the little screen on it. But I don't think it's TOO "modernistic" and somehow the housing is done in such a way that they stand apart from most generic pedals and these look and feel really sturdy as well. - A nice touch I find is the debossed VOX-logo, as they've done with previous pedals, and if you look closely, the brushing of the metal is actually done in a diamond-like pattern. So they definitely put a lot of care into the cosmetic design. - Though, I should add that, with previous pedals, they all still had the more "classic" chickenhead-knobs, while now they've gone for the round knobs with angular grip. They even had tube-driven pedals previously, about a decade ago, which did a similar thing, and even those had small chickenhead-knobs on them. However, all the rest of their designs looked gaudy, more like what DigiTech did with guitar-pedals before that. - So these ones looks absolutely tasteful in comparison, though they already had better designs since, like those they made with Joe Satriani. - I also saw some people say that perhaps they should've just branded them "KORG", but while I get where they're coming from, I think that wouldn't make it very clear that they're guitar-pedals, as Vox is definitely more guitar-focused and Korg for a lot more things, especially synths and the like. Also, just in case anyone catches this comment, I noticed there are actually 4 more pedals, supposedly they're a "series 2" of these "Valvenergy"-pedals, being an overdrive, (treble) booster, compressor and equalizer. But... while I saw an article on them supposedly being announced from January 2024, and they do have pages on the Vox-website, I'm not sure if any stores have them or if they even came out by now (July/August 2024). - But they're interesting and I hope they don't just give up on them. Of course sales matter, but they should just get the right coverage.

Youre using these pedals into a clean amp. That clean amp is a bit hollow sounding by design. Therefore.. I know this will seem crazy.. the resulting tones will be hollow. Amazing right?

Anyone know how these compare tonally to the previous Vox tube pedals (Cooltron line, Tone Garage line)? I've had most of the OD pedals in those lines and really like them. Very dynamic and very quiet and definitely inspiring. The Tone Garage Straight 6 and Cooltron Over the Top Boost were my favs. One of the nice things about the Tone Garage series that appears to be part of this line, too, is that they don't chop off the end frequencies - very wide range, yet controllable. I wonder if the low-end freqs is what was causing things to sound like a bucket. BUCKET!!
