Gets annoying how many people in the US don't know this.
@chrispcarrot

Made more annoying by the fact that on every highway I've ever driven on in the States, there are signs in the median stating 'Slower traffic keep right' and people completely ignore them. Since I got a ticket for passing a semi on the right that refused to leave the left lane and Florida adopted the slow lane law, I record drivers in the left lane on the dashcam and forward them to the FHP. Don't know if they care but they've never said to stop sending them.

Unfortunately, "obvious" does not apply to those many who are not very observant or intelligent. I've seen a few signs scattered around that actually say "left lane for passing only" or "slow drivers move to right lane". I wish those signs were more common.

@matthewcollins9741
@matthewcollins9741 8 жыл бұрын
That's not what I said. In order to (I hope) earn a valid drivers license, you have to pass the drivers test. Both the written part AND the physical driving part. What I'm saying, is that if someone manages to somehow obtain a license, AND pass both tests WITHOUT knowing the driving laws, that's the fault of the DMV for passing someone who clearly has no idea what they're doing. Taking a test without knowledge of the subject matter isn't a crime. Tests are issued to find out what an individual knows about the subject in question, and if someone manages to pass a test on a subject they know nothing about, that's a problem with the test. On the analogy of murder; that's irrelevant. People don't take tests to determine if they are allowed a license to kill. The crime of Murder is infinitely different than the crime of driving slowly on the left lane.

You need a more sophisticated kind of driver's license in order to enforce this rule. That's the reason why it actually works here in Germany. Also, this golden rule includes a strict prohibition of overtaking on the right.
@ArneBergsch
@ArneBergsch 8 жыл бұрын
It's easy: If he had the possibility to move over, he should not have been there in the first place. Hence, he was not overtaking anyone. On the Autobahn, someone is always faster. There could have been a Veyron approaching at 230mph just behind that Tesla. So also the Tesla HAS to move over after overtaking.

Wow, "constantly pay attention to the cars behind you"? Shouldn't you be paying attention anyway? The law here (Netherlands) is the same; only use the left lane to pass and then as quickly and safely as possible go back to the right lane. As long as you do that, you don't have to pay extra attention to the cars behind you, but if you see someone in your rearview mirror wanting to pass you, just speed up a little and pass more quickly.
@SilencedTomato

The law is not to let faster cars through. The law is to drive on the right whenever possible. Being on any other lane than the right one is considered an overtaking maneuver. In California, it quite literally is. It's part of mandatory driver's training for people under the age of 18. You learn that when passing, you're supposed to use the lane to the left to the car that you're passing, and you're supposed to speed up to do so. Thus, logic would dictate that the furthest left lane should be the fastest and the furthest right lane should be the slowest.

Slow drivers, have a couple of friends that fit the bill, they get mad defensive because they start to realize they are wrong in many of the confrontations they get in on the road. There are some bad tailgaters but usually the real bad ones are the ones trying to cheat squeezing into one lane. That being said, slow drivers always have these stories of tailgaters, but rarely do you hear "And I moved out of the way so they can get to wherever the need to be!" Slow drivers could be driving slow for many reasons so its not their demographic as much as it is just bad, non-empathetic drivers, drivers that don't really know how to give "courtesy" to the cars around them. They tend to have slower reactions but in general won't let you merge, or seeing your blinker will speed up and impede your movement. The funny thing is they do it involuntarily! They don't even notice they are being dicks. Every driver I met that was bad driver always felt they didn't need to be courteous but were pissed when people took their spots over them anyway. I find that to be hilarious.I feel the best drivers always do the most to make sure all the cars around them move smoothly. Its not really explanable but the best description of this is that they are aware of other drivers and will give right of way to other drivers if it makes everyone safe.

I do a lot of long distance driving overnight. It’s blows my mind how often people will be cruising along in the left lane, with no one else even around. Now, one could ask, what’s it hurting if no one is around? Nothing. But then I’ll come up behind them, be forced to slow down, follow them for a little while, and they refuse to move over and let me pass. Now I got to pass on the right, and low and behold, suddenly they are speeding up. Next I’ll be doing 90 to try and pass someone that was doing 70, while rapidly approaching a semi. Alright, I’ll slow down and get behind them, I don’t want to sharply cut over inches away from hitting the semi. What a surprise, we are now going 70 again.

In Germany we call it Rechtsfahrgebot and we are taught this from early on when beginning driving school. It basically consists in driving as far right as possible on roads with multiple lanes. Calling it a fast lane would be incorrect as it doesn’t matter how fast you’re going. You’re only supposed to drive in the left lane when passing another vehicle. It’s not uncommon to be on Autobahn and being overtaken on the left by a car doing 300 km/h and then see it getting back into the right lane. This is because once you’re done overtaking, regardless of your speed, you need to get back into the right lane.

Many exits are on the left" I totally agree that all lanes have the same speed limit. I totally agree that speeding and tailgating are illegal. I totally agree that the issue is not simple, for there are delusional nitwits out there that think that driving in the passing lane without passing or turning left is justified because the only people that it would be affecting are speeders. That is where it becomes complicated and not simple. Speeding might be dangerous, but so is congestion on the highway. Driving in the passing lane pacing the vehicles in the other lanes causes this congestion. These delusional left lane nitwits have no idea what kind of danger they are creating on the highways, and yet they feel justified. That is exactly why more and more states are making it illegal to drive in the passing lane.

I see that commentators here are shocked that this isn't common knowledge among American drivers. Let me tell you how bad it is, especially in Virginia: Here, to get a drivers license, all you need to know is how to start the car, and where the gas and brake pedals are. The US needs to pass laws supporting much higher quality driver education, mandatory training. In Japan, the process is rigorous, and the expectations for motorists is that they are "Professional drivers". That is what we need, Professional drivers, because US citizens spend way too much time on the roads to justify the reckless, stupid driving that is the rule, not the exception.

***** Don't know what you talking about, man. Who said anything about running someone over. Who speeds up or changes lanes at a pedestrian crossing? Just as that other guy said. Changing lanes is the dangerous part. The best thing ever would be if everyone would drive exactly the same speed all the time, everything would flow perfect. But that isn't how the real world works. As such we got to have rules. So that we don't have to guess what other drivers might do. Only use left lane for passing and otherwise always keep it free is a great rule that produces better traffic flow and limits accidents. Autobahn works without a speedlimit at all just because this rule is sooo good. Drive as fast as you need and want and be nice and leave space for other drivers. We are all on the same streets. We got to have common rules so that anyone can't do anything at anytime. That is what creates accidents.

Seriously? The core of all driving drive on the ride and passing the left as opposed to Europe where they drive on the left and pass on the right it's consistent through every state in this country and is called the uniform rules of the road which has a certain uniformity across all states in the country so that you don't cross the state line and run head-on into another car. Your driver's manual and your driver's education stress the need for you to go out and research to learn more before you start driving but you think that the thousands of pages of traffic law specific to your state should be in the test itself. it was in Bugs Bunny it was in Fred Flintstone you're inundated with it and expect it to know it. I don't think it would work because we have too many people complaining right here the driving rules seem to be a little bit too complicated. look it's simple always drive faster than traffic to your right and always drive slower than traffic to your left hand signal for what you're going to do not what you wish to do.

@@noefillon1749 it has long been a regular practice in the United States for people to seek out easier testing locations in nearby towns to make getting their driver's license easier. In the US once you get your driver's license in a few years has passed and that license expires and it's time to renew it there is no recertification, you just go to the DMV & tell them what your current weight is let them take a current picture of what you look like now and pay them another processing fee and you get your new license. the only time you ever ever take a road test is that first driver's license when your 16 years old but there are still locations that don't give a physical road test and some locations have more difficult road test and or written test. Some locations do not have a road course track or test on the roadway at all. Some locations that are underfunded and just cannot implement the entire test for whatever reason. We allow variance in testing requirements as well as how certification for the testers themselves is implemented by their superiors and certifiers Etc. my point is our standards don't have standards. so as a result our drivers have varying habits and varying opinions on driving the same road ways at the same time.

You are kidding right? Sorry for the agressive reaction, but I drive the IC-19 regularly (from Sintra to Lisbon and back) and often I'm met with drivers whom I have to tailgate until I find an opening to pass them by the right, which is an annoying, dangerous and illegal manouver to have to do. I usually don't even tailgate at first, I keep a safe distance and blink my left light to signal passing intention and only do overtake via the right lane in the regular case that the driver in front of me ignores my request for passing. Usually I hit the buzzer while passing them, pass really close and come back immediately in front as a means to scare and wake up the driver to the fact he is doing something he shouldn't.

In Germany, and generally in Europe, you must go through a very extensive driving school before you can actually get a driver license. People over there actually know how to drive, share the road, understand speed differences for each lane, how to change lanes, how to give enough room entering or exiting the high way, etc. While in the US, driver licenses are being handed out to people who barely know how to steer a steering wheel and shift to D.

It amazes me that driving instructors do not mention anything wrong with cruising the left lane at the speed limit. It seems acceptable in Cali. Another thing a Cali instructor insisted i do is TAKE my right of way in intersection while in a right turn lane at a yellow blinking light, while traffic is making turns in front of me. He told me i cannot delay the drivers behind me in the right turning lane. I was taught a driver cannot TAKE the right of way. You can only YIELD the right of way.

@@JackSquat54 It is acceptable in California, that's why it's not taught here. We are a maximum speed limit state. You can't exceed the speed limit in any lane, so as long as you're doing the speed limit in the left lane it's considered legal. However, if you are going more than 10 miles under the speed limit you are fairly likely to get a ticket. An acquaintance was doing 50 mph in the right lane of the 10 freeway in Los Angeles, and she was pulled over and got a ticket. She explained that she was new to town and just a little bit nervous and the cop didn't care. He pointed out that as long as the surrounding traffic was going faster and had to constantly pass her, she shouldn't be on the freeway, even though she was in the right lane.

Wait, hang on a minute...you can pass on the right in some parts of the US??? German drivers aren't just more likely to use the left for overtaking only because of the lack of a speed limit, but also because passing on the right is AGAINST THE LAW EVERYWHERE IN EUROPE and is enforced. Even when there are no cops, you can expect to be honked at incessantly by justifiably angry drivers until you leave the left lane if you're slow.

In most of the US, passing on the right is legal, just not recommended.
@chrishenk4064
@chrishenk4064 8 жыл бұрын
A huge part of the issue here in the US though is that people either don't know of (somehow) or blatantly ignore the laws. Here in Texas for example the highways are clearly and consistently lined with signs pointing out that the left lane is for passing only (as a law, not a recommendation), but it's actually MORE common that the right lane is the passing lane because no one listens. I think it's a result of the fact that semi-trucks face massive penalties for speeding and drive the speed limit as a result plus (again because they're better drivers and will get massive fines / lose commercial license if they don't) the trucks are always in the right lane unless they're passing. Combine that with the fact that 90+% of cars are speeding means that they end up needing to pass the trucks and the lazy, incompetent people remain in the left lane the whole time because turning the wheel slightly would be an ordeal so unconscionable that no human should have to live through it. There's a massive problem in US with driving because it's basically impossible to lose your license unless you're so poor you can't afford fines. There aren't any real consequences for breaking the law (many states are terrifyingly lax on drunk driving for example) so everyone just keeps doing it.

It's possible that the passing driver is a complete moron. In fact, I'd say it's likely. But, it's also possible that the passing driver is experiencing an emergency of some sort, and, personally, I'd rather not be the individual responsible for impeding traffic and potentially causing harm just to prove a point. This is why it's best for drivers in the left lane to pass those on the right and immediately return to it afterwards. It isn't just the safest action to take, it's also the law.

yermomsboxx this is an interesting point, he may be experiencing a legitimate emergency of some kind. How often is this the case on the road, though, compared to a driver being late to work? Cards on the table, I have friends who like to weave, and maybe I'm stereotyping. My friends say they weave for two reasons: 1) they don't possess the patience to endure traffic (and really, that's fair enough, just don't slam into me when you do it) 2) they believe they are better drivers than everyone else and thus are entitled to drive a little unusually. The second point is what rubs me the wrong way, since it simply isn't true. If anything, my weaver friends are worse than the average driver

In twenty years of driving in northern Ohio I've never known this to be a major problem. Have you ever gone on the on-ramp only to find cars are completely stopped waiting to merge onto the highway? It's extremely unsafe.

The reason Germany can have the Autobahn is because its 10x harder to get a license over there. The driving tests here in the states are a joke compared to some European countries. Our whole process takes as little as six months whereas countries like Germany and Finland take anywhere from 1-2 years and it's a lot more expensive (>$1000). Their fail rates are actually a lot lower than US, but a lot less people taking the test per capita.

Actually it's perfectly possible to get a German license in just a few weeks. The minimum requirements are 12 hours of theory that is taught in classroom training and 12 hours of driving under the supervision of an instructor (5 hours on the Autobahn, 5 hours on regular roads and 3 hours in the dark). Most people will be taking a few more practical lessons though before they register for the formal theoretical and practical examinations. The reason why I believe the Autobahn is safer than US Highways/Freeways/Interstates is that not only it is compulsory to drive on the right lange when not overtaking but it's also strictly prohibited to overtake on the right. I consider overtaking on any lane you choose as very dangerous and it's a thing I need to get used to again and again every time I visit the US.
@Chris.Tustain

As already mentioned and the same in UK, we can get license fairly quickly depending on the students ability to show confident and safe driving techniques and also pass the classroom theory test. but you will still find the same issues as other countries where some people kind of throw the highway code out the window after passing and drive like idiots. we have advance driving classes available and should be able to receive a higher discount on insurance after passing the exam.

The thing is, driver education is all over the map in the US. Keep in mind, the US is massively larger than the UK. States have their own laws about driver education, the curriculums aren't consistent, and many times they don't cover things like "left lane is only for passing." As you saw in this very video, the laws are different in each state for this one, too. So no, not all drivers are taught this in the US, or if they are it's not always clear how important it is. The US is a huge country, it's not going to be consistent border to border.

Then what's the point of having a 3 lane road? It should be fine if the 2 on the right are used for normal / slower driving and the far left is for people that gotta go fast.
@gray4203
@gray4203 8 жыл бұрын
+Matthew Shaffer On many 3 lane roads the left lane is used by lorry's and very slow divers, and the other 2 lanes are both counted as overtaking lanes, the good thing about 3 lane roads is that lorry's can overtake each other while still being under the speed limit allowing other drivers to use the 3rd lane to still pass the lorry's.

Often you're cruising in the middle lane faster then the traffic in the slower lane and there's some guy in front who is not keeping pace. In which case you have to shift lanes another time instead of just going straight forward then merge back into the middle. It's an unnecessary hassle.
@rjfaber1991

Easy solution: Make it illegal to stay in the outside lane if you're not overtaking. That's the law in a lot of European countries, and faced with the prospect of €200-ish fines, most people will just go back to the inside lane as soon as possible. Oh, and while you're at it, also make undertaking illegal, because having that be allowed is just mental...

Here's a full comment I posted in response to the video earlier: "This video will make worse drivers! You need to take all the rules together, not emphasize one and ignore the others! Yes it's illegal to ride in the left lane, and it's also illegal to pass on the right in a two lane road. That being said, "slow" these days means only a little bit over the speed limit, and the problem is there's too many aggressive speeders. If you're going 65 in the left lane to pass a car going 63, there's nothing wrong with that, but there's sure to be idiot tailgaters on your bumper trying to go 80. Those are the people who cause the accidents. It's also perfectly fine to back off until you have enough room to get back in if the car you're trying to pass speeds up. And a VERY important point: 'passing' INCLUDES getting up far enough so that you can see both headlights through your rear window. Otherwise, you're cutting somebody off, which way too many people in Massachusetts do. Also, the way you say it "forces" other drivers to weave between a bunch of cars; are you a MORON? As if they can't control the speed of their car... THEY'RE CALLED THE GAS AND BRAKE PEDALS. If another car is riding slow in the left lane, they shouldn't be doing that, but YOU should slow down, keep a four or more second following distance behind him, and flash your lights just a couple times if you wish. Also, don't get mad at drivers going the speed limit for going "slow." I think it's pretty obvious that if you do, you're doing something you shouldn't."

Two wrongs don't make a right so why don't you just stay in your correct lane and I'll be in the wrong when I pass you safely going 90 in a 55. Every country is different.... Do you not understand that concept? In the US, highways typically have a crap ton of exits and entrances... and some highways can get pretty narrow with tight corners. There's absolutely no way it would be safe to do 120MPH on most US highways with the amount of traffic that exists. Traffic also plays a large part in speed limits. I'm going to take a wild guess in assuming that los angeles highways have far more cars on it than most areas of the world. People here tailgate constantly... meaning they are right behind other cars going 80+ mph... There is zero time to react if something goes wrong.

OP - Is it legal to pass someone on the right/weave lanes over there? We're "not allowed" to pass on the left (opposite lane system in the UK), a lot of people call it undertaking, but it isn't because that doesn't exist in the Highway Code. It's simply called passing on the left - which is frowned upon by the constabulary... Though not illegal if done with care and consideration, but you're almost certainly going to get pulled over if you do it. We motorcyclists are often the biggest offenders of this, purely due to the topic of the video!

Yes-it is the rule that you should stick to the right-the left lane is for faster driving vehicles and for passing. BUT here is the problem. There always is going to be someone else driving faster than you. You might be driving slightly faster than the rest of traffic, so you might think its OK to be in the left lane to pass other cars. So you get over to the left and instantly here comes someone rushing up on your bumper. No matter how fast you are going you are always going to have someone thinking its a car race and try to pass you. If the speed limit is 50 and you are doing 60 you will have a string of jerks who want to do 70. If you speed up to 70 you will have people wanting to do 80 and so on. It never ends. It is like a chain reaction. No matter how fast you speed up it makes everyone else want to go faster than you. If you get over to the left to pass another car it makes everyone else in back of you do the same. If someone is in the right lane going very slow when you pass them the cars in back of you are going to do the same, plus attempt to pass you as well even though you were not the problem. They will not simply pass the first car, they will stay over to the left and floor it attempting to pass every car in sight even though those cars are already speeding.

That's fine though. Let's say you want to go 60, and the guy in front of you is doing 50. You switch over to the left lane, and as you finish switching some guy trying to go 70 is on your ass. What you should do, then, is pass the guy in front of you from the left, then switch back over to the right so the 70 guy behind you can pass. The general rule at work here is this: if you're not passing somebody at the moment, then switch out of the left lane. Conversely, if you're going faster than the guy one lane to the right, you can stick with it.

You know a car has an option to slow down? It's a human driving, not a machine. As a human, driving in a specific high speed, you see someone signaling to over take you. You're both driving fast. Either you speed up a bit so he goes behind you or you slow down to let him go. It's not like people just switch lanes without even looking at what's going on in the road. Okay... so lets drop euphemism of "passing". The left lane is officially a lane where the speed limit doesn't apply. As someone who tries to follow the speed limit or go five over, I find it funny how often frustrated people are at me for not wanting to break the law :)

You wouldn't be breaking the law if you weren't on the left =) You just follow the law.... On the right. Problem solved!
@qbaker20

+Qwerty0791 the problem is when I want to go 5 over and I am stuck behind a law abiding vehicle, often a semi, travelling the speed limit. So I move over to pass and then move back over, only to do it over and over again because we somehow live in a society where "speed limit" has no meaning with the left lane traveling 5-15 mph over the limit.

Oh man, you just watched that video and already know that you're "that guy" that everyone else hates on the road. I find it amazing that you've accepted that fact and still refuse to cooperate with the way that all other drivers agree the road should work. You're not some trail blazer. You're just hard headed.

+Quinton Baker Well, in some states, semi trucks have to drive at a much lower speed limit than cars, so you might be doing 65, but the speed limit for them might be something like 55. Truckers still go over the speed limit though, granted it isn't as fast as you are, but it's still faster than the limit they have

I have to say, as a California driver, and i also know that every driving test has this on the exams, but here, or wherever else this is a problem, the issue isn't the knowledge, its that its not enforced so no one does it. I've tried this very tactic in several California cities and several times people don't let me pass or there simply isn't the space for it because people are just using the left lane as a regular lane (i feel like i didn't explain that part right but oh well). the problem isn't that people don't know, is that people arent willing to do it and with no one enforcing that law there is not incentive to change the driving behavior even if they are aware of its efficiency in change.

There is no law for anybody to enforce. As long as the driver in the left lane is going the speed limit, they are not breaking the law. Because California is a maximum speed limit state.

This really should be common knowledge. When I'm driving, I consider myself to be a relatively fast driver. But I'm not the fastest. If I see cars coming up behind me, faster than me, I get over when I can to let them by.
@TheAkran
@TheAkran 8 жыл бұрын
You should just get over regardless of someone being behind you or not. Obviously, if it means you'll have to change lanes again in a moment to pass another car it makes more sense to stay in the left. But if there's open road ahead of you, change lanes.

Akran Oh yes, I probably should've clarified that in my original comment. What I was trying to say was if someone was coming up behind me while I was passing slower cars I would seek the nearest gap to get over and let them go by. Where I'm from there isn't much open road.

+Trenton Pottruff DITTO! Thank you! How is this a difficult concept for people? that is how I was taught to drive. I think the bigger problem is not just that it is a lack of road rule knowledge but a lack of driver courtesy. My parents taught me to be a courteous driver, drivers ed taught me the rules.

Just because we don't have a speed limit doesn't mean every driver is a maniac. I realize this is a joke, but I really wanna clarify this. Most of us drive between 100 and 150 km/h on the Autobahn. Everything below is considered slow and everything above is definitely considered very fast. If we do have a speed limit on the Autobahn, it's usually 120 or 130 km/h, which is what most drivers are comfortable with. And it's been a topic of discussion recently wether or not we should introduce a common speed limit of 130 km/h on every Autobahn (I personally am neutral on this discussion, but a lot of people have really strong oppinions on this). One more thing. On every other country road, there's a speed limit of 100 km/h, and you really don't want to get caught speeding in germany, that can get really expensive.

NAME NAME NAME Thank you for the clarification, lots of people keep telling me there is no speed limit in Germany, and it’s normal for cars to go 200+ km/h
@namenamename390
@namenamename390 4 жыл бұрын
@@wanilimbe there are definitely some people who do, I actually know a few in person, but it's not the "default" way of driving here, and again, you can only do that on the Autobahn. Do it anywhere else and you'll drown in fines if you get caught.
