Their life arc is our life arc- from city to suburb, from tragedy to bliss. Special thanks to all Vox staffers and family that sent over their dog videos.
Read Alvin's article here: www.vox.com/2016/7/11/12109786...
When Alvin lost his dog Rainbow, he felt as though a human has died.
Humans have a special - and somewhat an odd - relationship with dogs. 60% of Americans own a pet, and the most popular of them are dogs. Our relationship with them actually goes back pretty far. Some scholars believe that wolves and humans hunted and lived among each other - and the reason humans came out on top was because we partnered with wolves. Then, as we evolved so did our furry friends. Now, we treat these animals like family. We give them names, keep them safe, and share our lives with them. So when it's time for them to go, it feels a lot like we're losing a part of the family.

For me it’s not “like” loosing a family member, it “is” loosing a family member. May it be a dog, cat or even a parrot - they are my family. I love them. They are my family

The pain does get a little bit easier to live with, but it never fully goes away. I still hurt for my two dogs that I lost that many years ago, and well Maggie's death is still very fresh, so I am still hurting over her as well, but I know that pain will never ever fully go away either. My dog was really sick a couple of days ago, she required 24 hour care and I had midterms, I told my professor what was going on and he wouldn’t let me postpone my exam, I even talked to the university’s committee and they said that if I wanted to graduate I had to attend. I was really mad because they let a classmate miss the exam because of his sister’s wedding. There should be more conscience about dogs being part of our family and our responsibility towards them, I’ve had mine since I was 10, we’ve grown together, losing her would be like losing a sister.
@Sajirah
@Sajirah 4 жыл бұрын
Wait, they postponed it for them because of his sister's wedding? A wedding??? The only time I've ever been allowed to postpone/skip anything at work or school was because I was either hospitalized or a family member had died.

When he died of brain cancer it almost felt like it marked the end of my childhood and my innocence. He reminds me of a happier time. I think the reason why we get so much more emotional when pets die over humans sometimes is because we know that the pet had an unconditional love for us. In their eyes, we were everything to them. They're the only beings who don't judge, or have any expectations over you. They are only here to make your life happier. They're also good listeners when you need to vent, and seem completely understanding. And most importantly, they'll never leave you or break your trust an any way which can't be said about other humans. We feel everything that we desire from the love, and loyalty of our pets.

I remember having the dog I grew up with put down. Our vet, a long time friend of my father, came to the house. I remember asking how it was done. I’ll never forget, he said that it’s basically an over dose of anesthetic. So they are very literally put to sleep. When they are given that much. Instead of just keeping you asleep and alive. It takes you so far down that it stops the bodies autonomic function as well. Like breathing, heart beat and so on. This has always brought me a lot of comfort.

Honor your pets life, dont not let it ruin you mentally. Your dog didn't give all these years of love only for you to spiral. It's sad, you will forget love and miss your dog. You should open your heart to another pet, you can honour your dog that way. Our dogs grow old. I lost mind last Friday. I'm so sad, I cry, but I refuse to allow my dogs legacy to be a broken me. my dog would never want that for me and that's why I will honour my dog by just being the best version of me

Cats are naturally killers, dogs are naturally killers, heck, humans are naturally killers. We are all predatory animals. Just because you haven't had a bond with a cat doesn't mean that the bonds others form are less valid. Convention doesn't dictate reality either, so if " no one says it", doesn't mean that it's not true. I love my cat, every one that I've had has held a very special place in my heart as a family member, and I've mourned their passing, and buried them too.
@JustNatax3

Vixel You're wrong on so many levels. Cats do bond to their owner, every cat has a different personality and they're mourned by their owners. There are videos like that on the Internet. Quite a lot actually, just because you never watch them doesnt mean... u know what: whatever. You're too ignorant to open your mind anyway.

I totally agree with that guy about how you feel when your dog dies. People who don't have dogs or pets might not understand, but it really is like having a family member die. Sometimes it's worse. Because how do you make the decision to put down a beloved family member? It's painful.

Every few hours I cry or just lose it when I hear him whimper or see him with his tail down. It's breaking my heart & I know very soon I'm going to have to make that choice & my heart is shattering.

Absolutely. I didn't feel more strongly when my dog died rather than when my cats died. I was equally distraught because both were creatures I'd spent decades of my life with and so it was extremely difficult to watch them go. When my dog died, I cried for days. And when my cats died, I also cried for days. One wasn't more important than the other.

My dog passed away earlier this month. He was only 6 years old and should have been in his prime. I have had dogs all of my life and never has a death hurt as bad as this one. The last dog we had died of old age, as did the previous one. So, for both of those we knew it was coming and could mentally try to prepare ourselves. My dog Jo though.. he had been losing weight, but we thought it was due to the diet food we had the other dogs on. Then there was vomiting for a couple of days before I took him to the vet. The vet even said "other than the obvious weight loss, he appears fine". They took blood, told me that I was right for switching just his food, and to call in the morning. I called in the morning to find out he had elevated kidney levels and to bring him back to have fluid treatments to which I obliged and he stayed the night. I call back in the morning to find that there is a large chance that he will not make it and to try a specialty vet to see if they can do anything. We drive 1 hr to the other vet to get the same bleak news. They said they could try running tests and trying medicine but with the levels he had there was little chance for improvement. He would never be the same dog, I would have to give him an IV daily to keep him alive and hydrated, he would have to continue to take antinausea pills to consider eating, he would never gain back the weight. This was even with treatment. I took him home with an IV, nausea pills, and no hope. Warning this is graphic. The next morning he's laying in the recliner, wrapped in a blanket (that I still can't bring myself to wash) and he hardly takes note of me. He was so tired. I give him a pill against his will. Then I go to give him an oral solution to help with his stomach, mouth, and esophagus. Some blood comes out of his mouth. Mind you I took him to the vet Tuesday and this is only Friday. I made the decision that day that I would not make my best friend suffer. I cried so hard at the vets that I hyperventilated until the point that I was dizzy and lightheaded and thought I was going to pass out. I feel so guilty and sad everyday. I am currently taking 17 credit hours in college and working 30 hours a week and I am beyond exhausted mentally. I should have had 6 to 10 more years with him. He was also the first dog that was specifically mine. I payed for him, picked him out, paid for his vet bills, trained him, taught him simple sign language for sit stay and lay down, and loved him so much. Like the guy in the video, I also watched my grandmother go through hospice. I think I reacted more so to my dog since there was no time to come to terms and say goodbye.

Currently I am trying to cope with his passing by having a piece of art made from some of his ashes. I had a blow glass paperweight made and it is beautiful. I sleep with a stuffed animal papillon with his dog collar on it. And I have been looking for new dogs. I am not much of a people person so I feel empty without having a dog of my own. But at the same time I feel like I am not worthy of a new companion. I also feel like I am replacing him and feel guilt for this. Plus Everytime I get my hopes up for a new dog it becomes adopted or bought. This is making me more of an emotional wreck because as my boyfriend out it.. I am mentally adopting all of them just to find they are already pending to go to a new home. I just want things to get easier.

I know how you feel. It's especially tragic when our beloved companions die at a young age. My cat Marble died at almost 2. He suffered some sort of urinary blockage and by the time my mom discovered this and took him to the vet, it was too late. Marble had such a poor kittenhood, at around 6 months of age he fell off of a ceiling pillar and broke his hip. He spent probably 3-4 months locked up in a cage recovering while his siblings got to run around and play. His brother Tweetle Dum died at 1 year of age, after being struck by a car. After that my mom didn't allow the cats to go outside anymore (even though they originally showed up one day under our porch, and were used to the outside and inside.) I was Marble's favorite human, especially because during his recovery I would take him out and lightly play and love on him everyday for about an hour, I was pretty much his only socialization apart from my mom feeding him and giving him water. Marble had trust issues with everyone except me, and would regularly choose my bed and me to go to sleep at nights. It's been about a year now, but I'm still in disbelief about how young he died. It's so saddening. I hope one day your pain will pass, never the memory, but the pain. Best wishes.

Even though blood was coming out of his mouth I still gave him CPR to try and revive him but, it was too late our beloved Daeji had gone off to the rainbow bridge to be with his guinea pig buddy Chewy who passed away in September 😥😭 Sadly we had to learn the hard way about time being so precious and how there isn't any amount of money that can bring back our beloved family member, so now I tell everyone to spend as much time with your family and tell them how much you love them because tomorrow isn't promised😖RIP Daeji boy.

when my grandmother died, I knew she lived the way she wanted and took responsibility for her own actions, she basically enjoyed her life as much a posible, making decisions as any other human can. but when animals die, I feel guilty cause I know they aren't responsible for whatever life they had, we are. every animal that is a product of thousands of years of cultural selection only to satisfy humans, deserve at least a life without suffering, and we generally fail as a specie when it comes to it. everytime a pet dies I feel like we could've done better, they depend on us. so basically I only cry when pets or human babies die, for the rest of us, we've had or are having our chance.

When my dog died, I didn’t think I’d ever be able to breathe again. I’ve never been in pain like that, and I haven’t since. I’m bawling my eyes out after watching this, and to this day, I’m able to cry on command by thinking of how much it hurt to lose her. I felt guilty and wrong, and knowing I’ll never see her again breaks my heart. The guilt of being away from her when she passed was too much for me, it still is, though there was nothing I could do about my parents taking me overseas. When I got the call, it was Christmas in the country I was in, and Christmas Eve in America. There’s always a bit of a sting with that. I’ve never loved anyone as deeply as I loved her, and it was she who taught me what love is. It’s been years, but the pain hasn’t gone away. Dogs are so worth it, the cruelest thing about them is their life span. How much would I pay for my dog to live as long as I? Every cent to my name. There is nothing quite like the heartache that never goes away. If you have ever lost a dog, I am so deeply sorry, and can only hope science advances enough to enable our dogs to keep living.

My dog just died today. I still haven't recovered from my other dog passing last year of august. I am just really sad; anywhere in the house and place we went to before, I can still feel his presence, and it's almost like I'm living those memories with him still. I just want the pain to end, and if only i can do anything just to see him and my other dogs again, I will. I remember telling myself before that if my last surviving dog dies, i don't know what I could do to myself. But now, I'm trying to accept it, but i just wish I could see him again for the last time, in a state that he's lively and happy. I don't know if I want to get another dog again, I always feel traumatize whenever i lose them to illness, but it's also hard waking up in the morning without them jumping onto you with such energy as well as coming home to be greeted by them. Dogs just love so unconditionally, the only healthy love that you can find in them. Rest in peace, my 4 yrs old doggo, "Ash." I will never forget you and I will love you the same as your two older brothers. You're now together with them on the rainbow bridge. And don't worry about me, I'll cope with this pain, but I will never forget you. You'll always be in my heart forevermore.

Walking in my house is almost impossible, I see her everywhere, all the things she used to do, all her UNIQUE traits. I miss you Xuxinha, FOREVER...💔

Your dog probably still remembers you. There was a story about a man who lost his dog, hadn't seen him for years. Then one day they had a bring your pet to work day. His coworker brought in her dog and it actually the mans old lost dog! The dog ran up to the previous owner, happy, while he was looking confused. Took the previous owner a second to realize this was actually his old pet! So just know if your dog loved you once, it will always love you.

Dicte Glob It's not worse... At least your dog is alive. My mother gave away our dog when I was young to a nice couple and after a while our dog didn't really care about seeing my mother. When ever I loose a pet it's a lot worse. It's just like when a friend or family member moves to another country VS when a friend or family member dies.

My little Cocoa just passed away a couple days ago. It still is hurting. She was my best friend for 15 years. She saved my life. It’s amazing what she did for my ptsd. Now I can’t stop crying and missing her. I already see a psychiatrist once a month and my last appointment was scheduled a month ago and just happened to be the day after Cocoa died. My hour turned into 90mins. I don’t feel much better. I don’t know how to live life without her by my side. And I’m an old guy by the way. I’m not a millennial. I think having a relationship like this with a cat is perhaps a little less typical but definitely can happen, especially with those with more social behaviors. I had a very strong bond with my cat that evolved over the course of the 15 years I knew him (he was an adult of unknown age when I found him). When he died suddenly and unexpectedly several days ago, it was like watching a brother die, and being powerless to stop it. He was my friend, and the emptiness in my home now is something I have to face every day when he's no longer there to greet me at the door, whining for attention.

I read Alvin's article when it was first published and afterwards I went to see my dog (he lived with my partner) because I knew it would come one day. That was 5 years ago, and it's helping me process my grief today. Our family had to put down our dog, Sheffield, yesterday, due to chronic kidney failure. We thought we had more time with him because the treatment was for 2 weeks, but he deteriorated within a week and started to exhibit signs of incredible pain towards the end when he stopped responding to treatment and his organs were shutting down. It was an incredibly hard decision to make but it was the right one. He was a mini schnau-mix, rescued as a puppy, and he was going to be 14 in July. Our pets live day to day and they remind us what it's like to love, care for, and be loved and cared for without motive and unconditionally, which is rare to find in human connections in this day and age. They become a critical part of our support system, our routine, our source of joy/discovery, and when they're gone our entire world order is upended. It hurts so much to lose family, but we can only take it one day at a time, just like our beloved pets would. I'm not confident that time will heal this wound completely, but I hope that he felt loved by us in the never-long-enough time he was here on earth. I love you, Sheff. I will always miss you.
