One of the most magical moments of my life was when I was wandering around that monument on a school trip, it was near the end of the day and I was tired. But suddenly I started recognizing things? Actually, if you read Dawkins, the conception of religion is due to memetic societal behaviour. Hypothetically, here's the model 1. People want to not die 2. They subconsciously invent rules that punish murder and suicide 3. Not dying is a meme. ^ this is essentially the structure for all religious rules. There is no rule that has absolutely no purpose. (E.g., bible is against homosexuality because there is no childbirth involved in those relationships) Now, anybody with a right mind knows this must have to do with evolution. Unlike Darwin, however, Dawkins studies social evolution with great comparison to the evolution of the individual. The set of rules that govern the individual is the mind, the set of rules that govern society is religion, and those rules are enacted because memes. TL;DR Religion is probably the first meme.
