The term "narcoterrorism" comes from Colombia. It was a term first used to describe the activities of the Medellin Cartel and still applies to the conduct of a lot of drug cartels today. But overall, great video.

I am Colombian and the statement made by the lady "we can't think of a single terrorist attack that was directly funded by drugs" is completely false (or maybe she doesn't know). I know of many terrorist attacks before and after the narco-terrorist law was made. The DAS bomb in Bogota, the avianca flight 203 bomb, the El Espectador bomb, all of this terrorist attacks in 1989 were made by el cartel de Medellin (the head was pablo escobar), the biggest drug trade organisation in history, they bombed this places and may others (they also killed and kidnaped thousands of innocent people) and this was only in Colombia. Also the FARC is funded by drug trade, according to the US government, the Colombian government and the UN the FARC are right now the biggest drug trade organisation in the world right now (they just singed a peace treaty with the Colombian government) and they engage in terrorist activities here in Colombia. Before the treaty they kidnaped and killed people and placed bombs in the cities. in 2003 they placed a bomb in club el nogal in bogota killing 36 people. All of this came of the top of my head, this is what i could remember just now, but there are so many terrorist attacks made here with drug trade money. Terrorism happens everywhere, not only in the US or the middle east, don't be so self centred. My parents lived their lives in real fear of terrorist threats because between 1988 and 1993 it was common to hear a bomb go off every other day in Medellin or Bogota because of the drug lords war with the government. Last fact, due to drug traffic Medellin, the city i live in, in 1993 was the worlds most dangerous city in the world and was beating records, right now it is not in the first 100. Thankfully the situation is much better now. By the way, im a huge fan of Vox, i love the channel.

Drug trade money coming from prohibition more like. Trafficking is a revenue generator, the drugs they sell can be easily manufactured for half the cost they sell at. What do they sell? Stuff like Marijuana , LSD,etc. Not to forget cartel fight among each other to create a monopoly. That DEA and "War on drugs" made it possible.

Because of extradition. A deal made between the USA and Mexico or Colombia that allows them to send narcos to the USA. I remember those commercials during that Super Bowl. (great game, Patriots upset Rams for Tom Brady's first championship) At the time, I thought to myself maybe this will finally shame people into stopping drugs and winning the drug war. So if drugs don't directly support terrorist groups (beyond cartel gangs that only exist because of prohibition), why was there such an eager effort to give the DEA new powers to crack down on drug trade? Clearly they just wanted to use a crisis as an excuse to do something they already wanted (more DEA power). But why, what was the point? I don't think it's possible to win the drug war but suppose it was and we somehow won. Would that actually accomplish anything if we had a "drug free America" without a total police state? I'm not sure it would be any better than if the war on drugs never happened.
@plissken94th57
@plissken94th57 2 жыл бұрын
That’s the point, the drug war is meant to to turn us into a totalitarian state, it’s the only way to fully criminalize drugs use.
@Knightmessenger
@Knightmessenger 2 жыл бұрын
@@plissken94th57 it sure feels that way. But why have so many gone along with it? Why have conservatives especially had no issue with what is clearly a violation of states rights, creates big government and destroys law and order. What was so bad about when drugs were legal 110 years ago? Did some major event happen that prompted mass fear and banning, like 9/11 led to the patriot act? Was there like a massive cocaine overdose in a town square? The way drugs have been demonized over the years and their prohibition is rarely questioned, you'd think they were made illegal because of some major reason. The only article I've come across mentions that it started with the Harrison Narcotics Act and was fueled mainly by racism. But didn't mention any specific inciting event.

@darealist4014
@darealist4014 8 жыл бұрын
You misunderstand, Colombia and Mexico have terrorism perpetuated by narcotics organizations, narco-terrorism is drug dealing to facilitate terrorism, that's the difference, the Mexican cartels or even Escobar, didn't have a politically motivated reason to sell drugs, they did it for the money, what they refer to in this video is dealing drugs to fund (politically motivated) terrorist attacks

They seem to be mostly located in the same building (with some journalists who travel around, and of course they take articles from non-employees). So Americans, who live in America, who have a history of working in American journalism (such as Ezra Klein at Washington post), producing news centered around news relevant to Americans isn't terribly surprising.

Narcoterrorism isnt very common but in the 80's and 90's in Colombia it was a major problem. The Medellin Cartel was responsible for numerous bombings and killings, even crashing a plane. This are all consider acts of terrorism and they were done by drug traffickers, but terrorism isn't all about money, it's about ideas and control, narco terrorism wasn't the term we first think when talking about Pablo Escobar and the Medellin cartel because it was all about the money.
