I live in Flint and I experienced this first hand. My elderly mother drank the water and my young niece drank the water. We were told that because of the lead levels in her blood, she would now have learning disabilities and a lower IQ among other things. What isn't told in this video is that many residents in flint live in poverty and can't afford to replace filters that go bad after a few months. Even though we are on Detroit water now, lead still seeps from the pipes and gets into the water. It is 2017 now, and all of the cities old pipes still have not been replaced. Flint schools were already some of the worst in the entire state, and now with this problem, children require even more attention then before. This was not the cities' fault at all, our governor pretty much forced the switch just to save a few million dollars. There has been some improvements, but just because the media isn't covering it anymore, doesn't mean the problem is completely gone.

Typical denial that there's a problem. People found lead and they blame the people's plumbing. Well, the mayor should let his children drink the very water to prove it's safe. They should make these rich politicians and their family live where the people live, consume what they consume.
@willparkinson8 жыл бұрын
Wait, so they were just pumping water directly from the river into people's homes?!?!
@x0acake8 жыл бұрын
+Will Parkinson They treated it. But not for chlorides, which are super corrosive. Many homes in America have lead pipes (including mine). Corrosion + lead pipes = lead leaks into water. Corrosion + iron pipes = the brown water you see in this video. Lead pipes usually aren't a problem because they immediately develop an oxide skin when exposed to oxygen, which keeps the lead separate from the water.

Gov. Synder is/was running Michigan like a business. His strategy to save money was to install Emergency Managers in cities that were in bad shape. So, he used a top down (corporate) approach in Flint to balance the budget. Turns out the EM had to only report to Gov. Synder -- devoid of the people of Flint, the mayor, and the city council. This is a prime example of what happens when people elect a business model into the governorship. You get people who will undermine the people of cities in whichever way possible to save money. They are just being good capitalists, by the way. The social costs are what we are currently seeing. Capitalism has an instinctual resistance towards social ails as Capitalism only cares about making/saving as much money as possible. People in Michigan got what they voted for (or because they didn't come out to vote).

The water from the flint river isn’t a problem. It is the fact that they failed to add corrosion control agents to the water that poisoned the people of flint. Without the corrosion control agents, the scale in the lead supply pipes going to homes dissolved into the water, which is the only thing preventing lead from entering the water. Switching back to Detroit’s will help, but it will take time for the scale to grow back...

Our city tried to save $130,000 a year. They hurt us they hurt our infrastructure. During this crisis they still require you to have running water charging you $100 a month. And that was before taxes. Water is a separate service. Water charges you by the size of pipe you are connected to it. To get water from Detroit Flint would have to pay a flat rate for whatever size of pipe is and or pipe size that's required. I had a customer running a laundromat he had a 2-inch pipe. His Flat Water rate he never used more than 10% of the water he paid for. He went out of business. The cost went up dramatically for each resident because of the mass Exodus of people leaving Flint when the shops got up and moved. The residents left behind have to flip the whole water bill for all the empty houses empty lots. water should never be an issue for Michigan being that we have so many huge Lakes whenever in stone's throw. I was there when it all went down it took me two years to get out of that town. Just remember all those reports but anybody has done about Flint it's not from the view of the actual citizens themselves. they always put their own spin on it. Being pressured at work to save money should be Criminal being that the person following it somehow is criminally responsible the true people responsible will never get in trouble

Whoa, how comfy to know that those who messed it up are not even arrested, and thousands of citizens dying is totally not a problem to the overpaid misanthropy. 🤔

This video doesn't actually explain anything. The problem was foreseeable but way more complicated than is being conveyed here: it isn't a mater of "good water" vs "bad, polluted water". It's a problem of old pipes and "water with lots of calcium in it" vs "water with just normal amounts of calcium in it". When they switched to softer water it disrupted the film that coated all of the pipes and prevented the rust and lead from old pipes from getting into the water. Switching back to detroit water isn't going to fix anything short term because once the film is disrupted it will take a long time to reestablish.

They had to pay $85,000,000 to switch to the new water system that led to them using the local system in between just to avoid paying Detroit and they lied to get that money.
