Not everyone will readily admit to peeing in swimming pools, but it does happen. An anonymous survey from 2012 found that 19 percent of adults admitted they had peed in a pool at least once.
But when you use a pool as a giant toilet, that yellow trail contains some nasty bacteria and parasites. And the amount of urine and other organic materials like sweat, lotion, and dirt can affect the efficacy of chlorine or any other disinfectant in a pool. In some cases, it can take as much as 10 days for chlorine to kill off parasites like Cryptosporidium, one of the biggest culprits of illness outbreaks.
But besides not swallowing the water when you go swimming, the solution is real simple.

Honestly, one cannot trust anything that's public. Be it food made in a restaurant or a coffee from a 7- eleven, that seat in a bus/train, a public bathroom anything. Even a jar of peanut butter has some traceable amounts of roddent hair in it. If you observe things microscopically, everything has some sort of filth in it. Distressing but we can't help it

I can vouch for this. As a person that used to take swimming lessons in one of those big public pools in leisure centres I thought that smell was just chlorine. One time I went to a half empty hotel which had a pool and I was confused when I couldn't smell what I thought was chlorine so I was there paranoid thinking the water was not clean to swim in. I am a competitive swimmer, and I spend 15 hours in the pool every week. The pool where i swim has so many chloramines that I have asthma and had to take steroids for two months to make the swelling in my throat go down. This isn’t only because of pee, swimming creates a lot of sweat which can also create chloramines, but of course part of the problem is pee. Chloramines are a legitimate issue. I go weeks where I can’t take a deep breath without going into a coughing fit because my throat is so swollen. I was on the strongest steroid they could give me for a month and it did little to stop the inflammation. The problem I am having is that the pool where I swim doesn’t clean its deck nor does it leave the fans on overnight, so by the time I swim in the morning the pool is covered in an extremely dense coat of chloramines. Now one thing that they did not mention about chloramines is that they are a component found in tear gas. Imagine breathing that into your lungs every day, and you will understand my issue

Urine being the main contributor to the development of chloramines may be true for leisure, but someone who swims for exercise is dropping a lot more sweat and oils into the pool that break chlorine down into chloramines even if they pee during their workout. Chlorine is intended as a disinfectant and sterilizing agent for this contamination. If you aren't interested in swimming in water filled with other peoples' sweat, mucus, saliva, and, yes, urine; maybe a public pool isn't for you. Another alternative is bromine (salt water) pools which do not produce chloramines when they combine with organic material while still sterilizing the water.

If you had an Olympic swimming pool with 20 gallons of pee. That's about 35 parts per million. If you replaced the water with air, and put 20 gallons of gaseous cyanide, the air would be far below what's considered toxic. 20 gallons of anything in massive pools wont negatively impact your health. Swimming pools have so much water that dilution is really the biggest defense against harmful bacteria and toxins. That being said filtration and chemicals are necessary to ensure that there is no bacterial growth and current toxins are broken down

So my Dad's pool a few years ago had this oily film on top and the pool stunk, I think it was because of 1 relative using it as a bath tub after a days work roofing... I thought it was from people swimming with sun screen on but from that bacteria film shot, it looked the exact same... That's disgusting, I only swam in the pool once that year because of the smell, glad I didn't go back in. Pool has been fine the past 2-3 years tho, no smell or film, probably because it's not being used as a bath anymore. Public pools are so nasty, I will never go in them and this totally justifies my disgust for them.

Bear in mind that urine is very similar to sweat so its not necessarily urine creating chloramines. Also they only recently figured out how to approximate how much urine is in a body of water. They essentially had to extrapolate the amount by testing for the presence of artificial sweeteners that passes through our urine. So that amount had to be determined by the average American diet when testing

(this is me getting a terrible sickness from a pool if you don’t wanna read this carry on) I went to California once and my family rented a house with a pool. When I went in the pool, I realized how bad it smelled. I accidentally drank some of it and I started to feel bad. After that I went to a restaurant and threw up in a toilet. That night, I felt really bad. I was ready for round 2. I ran as fast as I could to a bathroom and (cough) had diarrhea. After that my mom came in and rubbed my back. I was vomiting on the floor, while having diarrhea. And it just never stopped. After about 20 minutes of either throwing up or having diarrhea, it all just stopped. I had a peaceful sleep after that. The next morning, I felt bad but my diarrhea and vomiting were gone. I asked if we could go to a doctor or a hospital, but my mom said that there wasn’t one nearby. So, we called the doctor that lived near our house (we were in California for vacation) and they said that I should stay hydrated and wait it out. That was the worst sickness I’ve ever gotten. When we returned back home, my dad called the owner of the house that we rented in California. I don’t know what conversation they had though.

Great work Vox. Apart from Chlorine levels however, it is imperative that public pools have adequate circulation and filtration to keep em healthy. Without that, there are large areas of stagnant water in pools where Chlorine is not as effective as advertised.
